Rossi and Petti Families in Salerno, Italy

I'm doing family research and I've gone as far as possible in the United States. I'm looking for information on my great-grandparents who were both born in Salerno, Italy. My Great-Grandfather is Andrew Petti and my Great-Grandmother is Filomena Rossi. I've been told that Filomena's parents came over with her and her brothers when they immigrated. I've also been told that we still have a vast amount of family in Salerno. Any help that could point me in the right direction so I can look for records would be greatly appreciated.

Melissa

San Valentine Torio, Salerno > Brooklyn Pacellis

Recently found out a bunch more info about my Pacellis. My Pacellis were probably all born in San Valentine, Torio, Salerno and were in Brooklyn by 1900 (though arrived 3 - 10 years earlier). Francesco (Frank) b. about 1845 d. 1920 & Giacoma (Jennie) b. 1853 d. 1922 & their children Pasquale (pretty sure he also went by Walter) b. about 1870 d.?, Guiseppe (Angelo) b. about 1881 d. 1950s, Grazia (Gracie) b. 1887, d. ?. Francesco's parents were Francesco Pacelli and Mary Crispi. Giacoma's parents were Joseph Crispi and Giacoma Terra (I have no other info on their parents, other than that they were born in Italy and were probably also from Salerno). Both Francesco and Giacoma are buried in St. John's Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens.

Most of them were living in Brooklyn on Summit St. in 1900, Harrison St. in 1904/05, St. Edwards in 1910, and N. Portland Avenue 1915, 1920, 1925, & 1930. Joseph (Angelo) may have been living and working on Clarkson Ave (Brooklyn State Hospital) in the 1940s. Oddly - his second wife Violet (Viola) died at Pilgrim State Hospital in 1969 and had been at Creedmoor in 1930. They are both buried in St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale, LI. Pasquale (Walter) married Winnie and lived on Myrtle Ave. in 1900 and 1910. Winnie's maiden name may have been Sinclair or St. Clair. Both Joseph (Angelo) and Pasquale (Walter) were barbers, and at least some of the time worked at a barbershop on Myrtle Avenue. We're not sure what happened to Grazia (Gracie) but know that she married Guiseppe Amadio January of 1904, and was living with the Pacellis on Harrison St. in 1905. She married Guiseppe Amadio b. about 1875 in Rome, Italy (parents were Eugenio Amadio and Rosa Corradino) and had one child together, Eugene Amadio in 1905. We suspect Guiseppe may have returned to Italy and had other children there, but we're not sure.

Other than Grazia's one child, we are unaware if Pasquale (Walter) & Winnie or Joseph (Angelo) & either Adi (first wife) or Violet (Viola) had any children. We're also not sure of any connection to Pacellis living in the U.S., but know there are some originally from Salerno. Any connections with my Pacellis?
Hello... I'm looking for info on siblings of my g-mother. Her name: Maria Grazia Verdino born Sarno, Salerno in 1898 (alt 1892), parents: Carmine Verdino & Filomena Fiorentino. She came to USA in Feb 1908 (alt 1916). She married my g-father, Francesco Bonaduce (of Terlizzi, Puglia)in NY,1924.

I do know Maria had at least 2 sisters, Lucia & Beatrice. Lucia married Nunzio Squillante in 1906 in NY. Beatrice was supposed to receive Maria upon arrival from Italy, but records show she was picked up by BIL Carmine Antonio Rocco, who I am told was Beatrice's husband. Unfortunately, I can't find any immigration or marriage records for Beatrice Verdino or Beatrice Rocco. There is an entry in the NYC death index for a 24yo Beatrice Rocco for Feb 1908, but I have not had the chance to follow up as yet.

Any info on Lucia, Beatrice or other siblings or cousins of Maria Grazia Verdino would be appreciated...
Searching for Terranova, D'Amato, Ippolito families in Sant' Arsenio

Trying to connect with my Maternal Great Grandparent's family, possible still living in Sant'Arsenio. My Great Grandfather was Sebastian Terranova who married Cecilia D'Amato, date of marriage unknown to me. My Grandfather, Giuseppe Terranova's birth certificate issued from the Comune Di Sant'Arsenio, Provincia Di Salerno, listing his birth as October 26, 1883. He came from Sant'Arsenio to the USA, possibly residing in NY City first and then Jersey City, New Jersey. Giuseppe has a few siblings that I am aware of, being Antonio born in 1878, Mary, Arsenio and Luigi who born around 1876. Antonio married a Rosa Ippolito, who was brought over to the USA by Luigi in 1903 to marry Antonio. Any inquiries from the Campania Region would be appreciated, as I also have family members from Trentinara.

Looking for anyone with connections to the Ruotolo/Rotolo surname. My great grandfather, Angelo Ruotolo (son of Pasquale and Maria, her last name unknown) was born in Trentinara in 1878/9 came to the US in 1905, and settled in Jersey City in Hudson County, NJ. Wife was named Rosa(lina) Corrente, children were Emily and Pasquale. He died in 1909 and we have very little information on any extended family who may have also come to this country. It is possible that there was family who went to New York.

As the spelling of the family surname is still in question, I am including both Ruotolo and Rotolo in case anyone thinks there is any connection at all.

Thanks for any help!!

Book about Felitto, Salerno, Campania

I am interested in purchasing a copy of this book. This blurb about it that was on Felitto.net:
"This book was at first printed in 2002; at that time it was containing italian text only and published photos were black & white. This new edition also presents an english text and only colour photographs, but it pursues the same purpose as the previous one: it wants quickly provide a set of information about the village and his environmental appeal, on his cultural roots, on his traditions. This book remains, therefore, a tool offered to the curious tourists' sensitivity and to the roots' nostalgia of Felitto's people scattered everywhere in Italy and in the world."

Book selling price: Eur 9,00

ISBN 88-89332-02-6.

I would appreciate the help if anyone knows how I can go about getting a copy. The family has most of its roots in the Felitto - Roccadaspide area.
I believe the Felitto.net site has not been updated for quite sometime so I can't vouch for the accuracy of the information.

Thanks!

Hi
Can anyone out there help me find my ancestors? My father
was born in 1890 in the town or village of Rocco Clento. His
name is Carmine Ingagliato. Also, it would be nice if I had the
address of the Civil Service Office, that has vital statics, in that town too.
Ruth Bury

Hello,

I would like to write the comune of birth (Atrani) of my ancestor and request a birth record. I studied Italian and would like to undertake this myself, rather than hire someone.

If any generous persons are willing, I would like to some advice to the steps I should take. In particular, I would like to know the approximate cost I should expect and whether I can do this solely in writing - rather than on the phone.

I appreciate any and all advice. Thank you.

My maternal grandfather's family was from the Salerno area -- specifically, from what I understand, Bellosguardo and / or Roscigno. His father's name was Luigi Buonfrisco and his mother was Nicolina Lorenzo (Lena). They moved from Italy in 1903 or 1904 to Punxsutawney and later to New Alexandria, just East of Pittsburgh.

I have connected with long-lost cousins from Detroit that are related to Luigi's brother Donato Buonfrisco.

Any connections or further info would be great.

Thanks!

Todd Martin
Dallas, TX
tmartindallas@yahoo.com
I am looking for Di Giacomo's from Montecorvino Rovella, Salerno, Campania. I'm curious to know if the majority of the Di Giacomo's from this town immigrated to Philadelphia (North and South, but primarily around St. Mary of the Eternal at 22nd St. and Allegheny Ave. in North Philly), as the vast majority of immigration papers I've seen indicate MR as the town of origin.

I have been able to trace two branches of my family back to Scafati, Italy. Guiseppe Montefusco, born 1888 and immigrated to the states in May of 1909 married Annunziata Montefusco, born 1896 and immigrated in 1911. They met over in Italy, and married in Providence, RI. Annunziata immigrated with her father, Andrea Squillante and 2 sisters, Guiseppa and Rosa. Immigration papers say they were coming to stay with Andrea's son, Pasqualo in Boston, MA. I am looking for any info on Andrea's wife (presumably in Scafati), and his parents (names unknown). Also, I am looking for info on Guiseppe Montefusco's family in Scafati. I currently have no information.

Thanks in advance to anyone with ANY info!

Pasquale Siani

In doing research on my grandparents and great-grandparents, it appears that my great-grandfather Pasquale Siani came to America from Salerno in 1892. He was 17 when he came to America. He died at 36 in Chicago Illinois, my aunt always told me he was the only one who came to America from his family and that all their Siani relatives were still in Italy.
I found a record that he married Vita Taglio or (Faggio or Faglia) in 1902 in Chicago, Il. My assumption is that her name was Taglia ( that was in her obituary) and she was from Foggio. I do not know if that is near Salerno, if he sent for her, if it was an arranged marriage or if they met through people they know. In America he used the name of Henry Siani? Is there any way of finding desendants of his brothers or sisters? If there are any Siani's still there related to him. How can I get birth records? Any help is appreciated. Thank you, Flo Wolski

It's easy to translate Italian to English

http://google.com has language tools. Click on the Language Tools and it will take you to a translation page. You can take a word, phrase or sentence and type it in the box and click on the translation for Italian to English. It is not perfect, but you will get an idea of what the document says.

Google is not the only search engine to have this tool.

If you still have a problem you can type the words in a query on the board - hopefully someone with a good command of the language will translate it.

The mother of my great grandmother was born about 1869 in Eboli. Her surname was Filomena.
In 1886 she lived by Filipo and Caterina CASELLA in Marseille, France (according to the census).
She had 2 brothers (Francesco and Giuseppe), both tailors, living in France too and who naturalized French in 1900 (Marseille and Brignoles in the South of France). They were born in Muro Lucano near the 1850'.
In 1888 she had a baby, a girl (my great grandmother) she abandoned to go to New York from Bordeaux, onto the ship CHATEAUX-MARGAUX with Filippo and Caterina CASELLA. She also travelled under that name.
They arrived in the Port of New York 24th july 1888.
And then I lost their trace...
For his French naturalization in 1900, her brother declared her sister Filomena was married as CASSELLI mother of 2 other children.
It would be kind if you could help me.
Anne-Laure, from France.
Hy,
I live in Roma, Italia and I am trying to trace the descendants of some relations of mine who went to the US around 1910, leaving Montecorvino Rovella, south of Salerno. Their names were: Ms. Giulia Marino (maiden name: BASSI) and Ms. Maria Sommo (maiden name also BASSI). The two ladies were sisters of my now deceased paternal grandfather Mr. Eduardo Basso (the "i" of Bassi was inserted by mistake). Their last address which I could trace dated back in 1955 and was: 33 Harrison Avenue, Lynbrook, Long Island, NY, USA. I wonder if there is any descendant alive, and he/she should come across this message I would like to be contacted. LUIGI BASSO, from Roma, Italia.
