Harps ancestor from "Statta Janova"

I have recently discovered a g-g-g-grandfather came to Canada from "Statta Janova" in Italy. I have had no luck with finding this area on a map, and thought perhaps there is a spelling area and "Janova" should read "Genova." The name Harps didn't strike me as being Italian, and I thought perhaps it originates from a country bordering on Italy, or perhaps Genova had previously been part of another country (I don't know my Italian geography or history very well). This ancestor's name was John Harps and was born in 1816 in "Statta Janova." He came to Canada, not sure when, and married Mary Sylvester. They lived in Stormont County, Ontario and he died in 1900. If anyone has any ideas of where I should look for Italian records, or any clues about where this Janova could be, I'd really appreciate it :)
