Re: 1766 Map of Reckingen Luxembourg

a copy of the map would be great. My e-mail address is: gina.blum@comcast.net

Pierre (or Peter) Blum acquired the castle in 1694 from Charles de St. Boussant. They were both cavalry officers, but Charles was actually a Knight. Reckingen had only a few hundred people, so this wasn't a huge deal. 1694 was during the 9 years War and also the second year of the little ice age and the economy was very, very bad. Pierre paid 1600 crowns for the castle, but I don't know what that amounted to. At some point the family lost it. By 1800 they are living in Pfaffenthal-Siechenhof, which I think was the poorest district in the city of Luxembourg. Up until now we hadn't believed the great-grandfather's stories of having come from a once important family - important being a relative term.

The Blum family was still at Reckingen in 1735, but that is as far as I have gotten. I have a lot of work to do. Pierre's son was named Jean Baptiste Blum

I have been reading legal proceedings, including summaries of contracts, from the 1600s and 1700s. Very often the right to receive rents in the form of farm produce from a certain area was sold - so I saw that sometimes a person might have a 1/3 interest in the produce of a village or a 1/2 interest in the sale of wood.

I got a copy of the map from my cousin in Luxembourg who did extensive research, some of which came from castle archives. I don't know specifically where he obtained it. However, I can e-mail you a copy if you wish. Let me know. Currently, I'm on an extended trip, but will return home at the end of Nov.
Does your husband have any details regarding Pierre Blum's reign as Lord. How did he become Lord? Where did he reside? What were his powers, etc.? Thanks.

When it was over the family members that remained Catholic were on the west of the Rhine River and those that became Prostestant were on the east side.

Regards, Bill Weidert

A member that goes by "farmyard2". In every post this member points out that living Bastendorff relatives in Paris have no interest in family history. I've inquired further, but not heard back as yet. My father passed away in September, so I'm a little behind on my research. I'd be very interested to learn what you find on your visit to Lux. I'm happy to share what I have.

Schmidt - Bouck ? Luxembourg

I need help in finding information on my Grandfather's side of the family. I have found that my Great Grandfather and Great Grandmother came to America from Luxembourg. I don’t know the exact year. The 1880 census in Minneapolis, Minnesota show that they must have come over to USA sometime between 1864 and 1870. The children that were listed as born in Luxembourg in this census were Maria (1868), Nicolaus (1862), Jacob (1864). In the USA they had more children, one of which was my Grandfather, Edward Adam Schmidt.
The parents were John Schmidt and Katherine or Catherine Bouck (I am not sure of the spelling of the last name. Her name was spelled this way on the marriage certificate of my grandparents). I believe John was born about 1827 and Catherine about 1842.
I have a dinner ring that I my mother gave me before she died. She said that my grandmother, Amy McPherson, was given this ring when she married Edward Adam Schmidt and that Edwards mother had given it to Amy when she married Edward. A jeweler has told me that it is very old and the design represents the European design of the late 1880’s.
Is anyone able to find any information on the family that John and/or Catherine Bouck left behind in Luxembourg?
Hi Jane - I've just found your message. My husband's family we always thought came from Alsace Lorraine but I now know that only the youngest child Armand Robert was born there the rest came from Switzerland but originally Germany (Wurzburg Bavaria) It's taken ages to ascertain all this. However, his grandfather was great grandfather was Georg Lommel - it sounds too coincidental that you also had an Armand (I'm wondering if one of us has the middle name wrong). Anyway Bill's gr grandfather was born in 1844 and was Jean George. His older brother was George Thomas and born in 1836. Armand was born in 1849 in Beblemheim in Haut Rhine, France. If any of this sound familiar please get in touch with me. I know that one branch of the family immigrated to America. My email is Kathleenlommel@yahoo.com.au

It seems to me that a descendant of Michael T. and "Margaret" Margaretha Neuens. Has stated that Margaretha's maiden name was also "Neuens." I do not doubt that. But what I am trying to find out is for positive who her parents were. I am wondering if they were "Henry" and Magdalena (Schuller) Neuens, who also immigrated to Ozaukee County Wisconsin?? But I haven't been able to prove that for sure yet. To find out for sure who Margaretha's parents are is one of my goals. Does that ring a bell with any Neuens??
starlight2me@aol.com

There is an alternate way to research Remich. In 1999, Dr. Kayser Posper and Roger Kayser research and published
a book on Remich von 1668 to 1900, it is called "
Familienchronik Stadt Remich". The book has a short history of the Remich with a few photos.

I think the book is still is still in print. Send me the name
of the family you are researching and I will check my copy of the book.

Cindy -what are the family names you are working on? I was just in Priest, Speicher, Auw, and Trier Germany. We met my husbands relatives who all came from Preist. I have a book on the history of Preist that one of the relatives gave me. It's in German but we can translate it. Preist was the center for keeping all of the Church Records until the 1880's when a church was finally built in Auw on Kyll started keeping their own records.

Luxembourg became a part of Germany due to the 1815 treaty after Napolean Bonaparte was finally defeated. The former Luxembourgers don't really pay attention to their Luxie heritage and consider themselves German. Although they kept the dialect (Moselle Frankish) and customs. Please contact me and I will see what I can do to help you!

What state are you in? There are Roders in Wisconsin.

Re: Balbierer Family

John,
I think we have common Balbierer ancestry, but my info is limited. I know that my Balbierer's were part of the Donau-Schwabians, colonists, who emigrated from the same area of SW Germany (no specifics on that)to the area of Temeschburg in what was then Hungary. My great grandfather was Josef Balbierer, who listed his last place of residence as Ghiroda, Hungary before he emigrated in 1902 to the US, through Baltimore. He was born in 1856 and was married in Hungary around 1884 to Eva Balbierer. Eva listed her last residence as Uberland, Hungary, just NW of Temesvar. She emigrated to the US in 1904 with her and Josef's two children, Joseph (19) and Eva (15). They sailed to Baltimore and met up with husband Josef in Allegheny, PA.
I believe that Josef Sr. was not the same cobbler who worked in Gertianosch at least until 1891. My Josef did not have a daughter, Magdalena and the Meininger connection isn't mine either. Joseph Jr., my grandfather, later changed their name to Balbier, which it has remained since.

I would love to learn more about their ancestors. I don't know where in Germany they came from, but for lack of any other clue, I will go with what your message said, Kurfurstentum, Trier. There must be a connection, the name is too unusual.
