Attard, Lagana, Aquilina, Chircop, Doublet, Borg, Grech, D'agostino (Maltese relatives Michigan USA)

I made a trip to Detroit last week and went to my Aunt's house to go through her photos and memory boxes. This was a huge feat as she has all my family's memories stored at her house and no one from my family has ever seen them. She is the oldest sister in our Attard family and she has always been the one to take the pictures (but never shared them with anyone) also she was the one who "Inherited" all Grandma and Grandpa's pictures and things and she also has never let anyone see them.

I basically "took one for the team" and showed up at her doorway and let her know that I came to see her photos.

I was met with resistance but soon, we were looking through old photos and she even let me take some down to the local copy place to make copies for the rest of the family. (I'm now a hero amongst my cousins and aunts and uncles) LOL.

ANYHOW...while going through all the pictures, I came across several death cards and a ton of old photos that we are not sure of who they are or how they are related.
I thought to myself, how many Maltese names I've come across on these boards and maybe someone out there is looking for a relative that they didn't know whatever happened to them. Anyways, all the ones that I have listed have a picture with it. I will type out the "important details" but not the prayer on the cards. I hope this helps someone. If by chance its one of your relatives, and you would like a copy of the card, please email me and let me know so I can scan it for you.

Joseph Borg- left this wrokd after 60 yeas of married life at the age of 78 on Friday January 2, 1931 at his home 915 Plum Street, Detroit, Michigan
Surviving him Are his only son- Rev.
Malta DNA Project, began 6/2008

I'd like to invite anyone who is Maltese or of Maltese decent to join the newly formed Malta DNA Project on FTDNA:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/malta

This project has been established to study the genetic heritage of Malta (including the Maltese Islands of both Malta and Gozo)which were first settled in 5200 BC by stone age farmers, who's people built the oldest free-standing structures and oldest religious structures in the world in 3500 BC--and has been the center of Mediterranean trade and civilization ever since. DNA testing, both yDNA for paternal lines and mtDNA for maternal lines, can provide a picture of the deep and recent ethnic background of Maltese and their descendants. This can include Greek, Italian and Sicilian, Arab, Sephardic Jewish, Norman, Spanish backgrounds, among others--perhaps even Phoenician. An added bonus, as more join and the database grows, is the possibility of finding common ancestors in the more recent period. This would allow family researchers to connect with distant cousins more quickly and collaborate more effectively in their research in the records.

Project Goals:
The Malta project has two main goals.

One is to investigate the ethnic and genetic diversity of the Maltese Islands as shown through the DNA of the descendants of those born in Malta and Gozo. In most cases project members will be the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Maltese. But, through the genetic story told in their yDNA and mtDNA, we can discover the heritage of Maltese over the centuries. We hope that some of what we learn through the results of this project can contribute to the knowledge of human migrations being studied by population geneticists.

The second goal, especially as we recruit more members, is to actually establish connections--a common ancestor--between some members. Genetic genealogy is a new tool in genealogy research that can supplement and help make breakthroughs in traditional records-based research. Once that common ancestor has been discovered, then much more productive research in the records can help fill out family trees.

Sahha,
Michael

Hi,
Can anyone help me find details of the parents of Victoria Mary Parascandalo, perhaps from an 1851 census in Malta, if there is one? She married John Watson Brown, and appears on the England 1861 census in London, aged 18, with her in-laws & child. The census shows that she was born in Malta, but that is all I know. Grateful for any pointers.
Carol

A real mystery from malta

Hi, ,my great grandparents and my grandmother left Malta and came to the us. There is great speculation that they left because they were in trouble. Their name was changed once here in America, but I am unable to find their old name. They are listed as Anthony and Evelyn Catt. My Grandmother was Blanche Rose Catt. Her two brothers were Hearld and Herbert. I am not sure who was born here and who was born there. Any suggestions on trying to find info on them? I guess I still have distant family in Malta. Thanks.

Their parents are unknown.

Patrick Nagel Telfer ended up in British Army in Quebec City and dying at sea between Barbados and England in abt 1855. John Buchan Telfer was a naval Commander and also a writer in England.

This Telfer family is somehow related to the Telfer Smollett family in Dunbarton Scotland. But how it is not known.

If you have information abt this family, I would love to hear from you.

I am trying to trace information about the wife of an anc estgor who was probably born in Malta. Is there any way I can find a cednsus for 1881 fro Malta.

Trouble is, I`m looking for someone Mary Jane McCarthy or McGuinness, she married in Ireland, and on her son`s birth cert she is noted as a native of Malta. Unfortunately I do not know her mother`s name or whereabouts she was born, only that her age in 1892 was 17 when she married.

Any advice or tips as to how I could trace her birth in Malta?

Hello!
My name is Michelle Xiriha and I was hoping to find out a little more about my dad's side of the family, but I don't really know where to start! We don't know much about the
XIRIHA side - only what dad can remember, though he's getting on and doesn't remember too much! What I do know is the following:

My grandfather's name was Phillip Xiriha - he had the following siblings: Marcel (died in a fire on a ship), Ninu, Joseph, Rita, Carmena and Pina. He married my grandmother, Carmena DE BONO born. May 1914, though I don't know when. My grandfather died when my dad was only about 12 (so around 1949), and my grandmother died in 1996.

My great grandfather's name was Franch XIRIHA (dad thinks!) - he was born in Mosta, but he and my great grandmother, Carmena (surname unknown), lived in Zebbug.

If anyone has any information on this family, I'd be grateful if you could please respond. Also, if anyone knows of any free websites which may list Maltese genealogy, that would be great too......it has to be in English though, as I don't speak/read Maltese unfortunately.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.
Kind regards,
Michelle
Melbourne, Australia

Villa/Vella connection to Ireland

Anyone know anything of Vellas in Ireland. My partner's family are descended from a Laurence Villa who settled here in Derry in the north of Ireland. Originally he had been in Rathmullen, County Donegal in the 1840s where he married a local woman before moving with his wife and children to Derry.
It seems his name was Vella but many Vellas in nineteenth century Britain and Ireland appear to have had their name anglicised to Villa. There was another Villa man named Felix, who was settled in Dun Laoghaire (then called Kingstown) in Dublin in the 1870s. Don't know if he was a connection, or like our Laurence just someone carried on the trade winds to Britain and Ireland like so many Maltese sailors of the time.

Hello...I'm looking for any info on Alfred Louis Pilcher or his family. He was born in Floriana in 1865 and was educated at the Naval Academy in Valetta. He was trained as a cartographer and later served as Captain in the British Navy. He apparently had 7 siblings - the only names I have are Oscar and Nanetta (sp?). Oscar may have relocated to South Africa. We believe that Alfred's parents are William Pilcher and Luisa Amelia Pesce and that William retired with the title Rear Admiral in Bath, England. William may have also gone by the name "Guglielmo". William and Luisa's children may have been given Italian first names and English second names. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance...

Cheers,

Colleen

Hello
I am searching for any info abt my great great grandmother. She was born in Hythe, Kent, England to George and Georgina Standford and Christened - Arabella Elizabeth Standford, abt 1858ish.

In 1875 she married George Stokes in Lyminge, Kent, England. They had 7 children. George died in 1900.

In 1903 she married Charles Edwin Jeffery, a soldier. They came to Malta after this. We know that she died in Malta after 1905 but do not know where she is buried or if she had any more children with Charles Edwin Jeffery.

It is believed that Charles Edwin Jeffery was a soldier in the West Kent's regiment, and that after Arabella's death he remarried.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
Kirsty

My grandmother Emma Colwill travelled to Malta with her employers who were a service family from Plymouth, Devon although I do not know their name. I believe her passport application was February 1899 and she would probabaly have travelled soon after that date. The family were still away from home in the 1901 British Census. Could I find what ship she travelled on and who her employers were from records in Malta and how would I go about doing so? Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Surnames: Cassar, Caruana, Locano, Rapa, Sateranio, Cutajar (Tunis/Malta relatives)

Have many families I am researching:
This is what has been collected so far...
Francesco Saverio LOCANO (d. July 17, 1908, Sliema) m. Giovanna Cutajar and had Alphonse (of Alfredo) b. 1843, Valetta d.? m. Maria Carmela CARUANA b. 1842, Sfax, Tunis d. Nov. 1931, Malta

Alphonse was a Mediatore <Maria Carmela was a Benestante> What do those words mean??
they had 7/8 children: Emma b?, Isolina b?,
Josephine b?, Emanuel b 1885 (died at age
8 mos., buried in Marsa), Joseph John Edward b 1887, Paola b 1892, Mary Madeline (or Magdalene, not sure which)b 1895, (John b 1891 - step son,had 3 sons: Edwin, Joseph & Hector.

This information is rather disjointed:
Antonio SATERANIO m. Francesco ?? and had daughter Emma CARUANA (this part doesn't make sense...why does she not have her father's surname?)

Emma married (2nd--maybe CARUANA was her first husbands name?) Antonia LOCANO this part doesn't make sense either...isn't Antonia a girls name? shouldn't it be Antonio? Antonia(o) LOCANO was born in Gharb Gozo, Malta.

Well, if you can make any sense out of this at all, I'd love to know it! Also if you have information regarding the other surnames mentioned: SATERANIO, CARUANA, or CUTAJAR.

Also, I am still looking for information regarding these folks too: Francesco RAPA and Angela CASSAR.
Chetcuti family in MOSTA - anyone know any?

Hello Everyone,

Hoping someone could help me locate our lost family. I am related through a Grazia Zammit whom married Giuseppi Chetcuti in MOSTA.
They had children: Giomaria Chetcuti,Filomena Chetcuti, Maria Chetcuti,Margerita Chetcuti and Ignatius Chetcuti.

All were born in Mosta. I thought that my major lead may be Ignatius Chetcuti as perhaps there weren't that many Ignatis Chetuti's in Mosta around this time. The children of Grazia and Giuseppie would be either 85 years old or older today or passed away. But wouldn't have been born more than 100 years ago I am guessing they were born between 1904 and 1919. If you know of an Ignatius Chetcuti or any of this family please contact me.

Hope someone can help. Thank you,

Kind Regards Always

I am Tiffany Bonavia, born and raised in Malta (EU). My mom's maiden name is Leone-Enriquez and her father (my grandfather) name is Vincent Leone-Enriquez. He served in the navy in the second world war, and after the war ended, he emigrated with his wife Margerita (aka margerite or gita) to Canada. They had a daughter there named Rita (my mom) and then emigrated to the US (Brooklyn NY). My grandfather was also a footballer here in Malta befor he emigrated, he used to play with Sliema and the RMA. In the early 1980's he came back to Malta together with his wife and daughter and they lived in Gzira, then Msida and then Zabbar (when my mom married my dad). Unfortunately my grandfather passed away in our residence on 15/07/2003. My grandmother is still alive. Since my mom is an only child, no one will carry on her family name. I was wondering if someone could help me to find any ancestors (dead or alive) both in Malta and abroad. Thanks.

I am an adoptee looking for my ancestors. I was born Joseph Paul Buttigieg in Guildford Surrey England in 1968 at the Assisi Maternity Home. My mother, Antonia Buttigieg was from Qala Gozo, Malta. She was 23 at the time of my birth. Her birthday is 12/26/44. After she gave birth to me in England (where she went to avoid a scandal) she brought me back to Malta where I was adopted. My birth father's name was Paul Xurreb (Xuereb, Xuerreb) and was 35 yrs. old and married. He might have been a goat farmer. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

J.J

Thorby in 1800s (Eng.>Malta>Eng.)

Hello,
I recently found that my ancestor, Hannah Thorby, was born in Malta in about 1820. Her father, William, was from England and her mother, Elizabeth, was listed as "foreign" on the 1841 UK census. Does anybody have any clue as to where I could find records of the Thorby's in Malta? They returned to England by 1841 and were living in Bramfield, Hertfordshire and William was employed as a gamekeeper. That is all I know. Any help is really appreciated!
Thanks,
Sarah
