The cause of death is never on a death certificate in the Netherlands. The medical doctor that declares a person death fills in a special form that is sent to the statistics bureau.
There are newspapers online, but lots of people never appear in a newspaper. We do not have an obit culture. The site http://www.drenlias.nl/ has the following information about him:

Emmen, overlijdensakte, 16 februari 1916, aktenr. 69
Overledene: Arend Kuik, geboren te Emmen; beroep: arbeider; overleden te Emmen op 15-02-1916; oud: 44 jaren, zoon van Jacob Kuik en Siele Werkman.
Gehuwd geweest met Amelia Jantina Hofste, in leven.

in english, poorly translated by me:

Emmen, death certificate, 16 February 1916, record# 69
Deceased: Arend Kuik, born at Emmen profession: laborer;
died at Em,men on 15-02-1916; age 44 years; son of
Jacob Kuik and Siele Werkman.
Was married to Amelias Jantine Hofste, alive.

There is, besides the standard texts, only more information about the 2 witnesses, but these are usually people from the undertaker.
On the page Reageren/Bestellen is information about ordering a copy of the record (in dutch). The price is 1 euro plus 6 euro handling plus mailing costs.

You better find a friendly visitor to the archive. He or she can make a paper for a few cents.
