I live in Whitinsville, Massachusetts, where there is a large Dutch community with LOTS of VanderBaans! I have just spent the past four hours working on VanderBaan genealogy for three friends of mine...and now I JUST found your postings! I've verified most of your research via Massachusetts Vital Records, www.genlias, Ellis Island, ancestry.com, etc.

One comment: Are you aware that Hein van der Baan was a twin??? Both Hein and a male Johan were born on 3 Sep 1854 to Johanna van der Baan. A note at the bottom of both genlias birth records was the following: Tweeling; aangegeven door Willem Reinouts (which translates to twin; indicated by Willem Reinouts.) Could Willem be the father?! He lives in the town where he is married with children.

THANK you for all your info on this string of posts! I had not yet figured out where John VanderBaan's parents and siblings were in 1910...I've been searching Massachusetts records!

Judy

My grandfather was Henry Pelmulder. His grandfather was Charles Pelmulder. Both from Iowa. The photo of Jelle in the Orange County, Iowa courthouse I understand is Henry's father.

I have no further information. I do have an aunt, now 93 years old, Henry's daughter, who might know more.

We might be related in some way.

I lost the message I was posting to you just as I was finishing it, so this may be a 2nd message. Between what an aunt did and what I have done since inherting her work, I have about 40 years worth of work on the Peter B. Wiebe Genealogy. Aside from Adam Wiebe, whom I have been unable to connect with yet, my ancestry is mostly Mennonite and covers Frieslan, West Prussia, So. Russia, and primarily Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas in the US. Please respond directly to me at ewmv2@msn. com. I live in Southern California. Edward Wiebe
Do you live in the USA or Nederland?

While I am not related to the Jellesma's that came from Barradeel I did a small search and found that most of the Jellesma's that came from the Barradeel region (Tzummarum, Oosterbierum, Midlum, Minnertsga, etc) went to Whitinsville, Massachusetts. The names going there were: Beitske Jellesma-Duimstra (in 1906) and her children, Jacob (in 1904), Hinke, Klaas, and Janke (all three with their mother in 1906). Beitske was married to Jochum Jellesma. Their daughter Jeltje went to America in 1898 and was married in Massachusetts to a Jacob Wassenaar born in Barradeel, son of Jacob Minnes Wassenaar en Tettje Klases Hogerhuis.

There was also a Antje Jans Jellesma, born in Tzummarum, who married a Marten Kooistra and went to America with her husband and children in 1893. Antje was the daughter of Jan Eeltjes Jellesma en Atje Sybes Stellingwerf.

If you can be more specific about what you are looking for then maybe I can find additional information.

They all had the patroniem Jelles and familyname Jellesma. I have a big familytree already, but I know it is still incomplete. I am happy to share information and have searched many certificates.

Hi Don – here is a brief summary of what I’ve been able to find for you.

Canadian immigration records are available free on-line. Click the link below to see your father and grandparents record. They arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on 27 March 1930, your father just 6 months old. His sister Ymke was age 2, parents 25 and 28 years.

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/immigration-192...

The ship was the “Nieuw Amsterdam” of the Holland American Line. There were several ships of this name, this was the first and she was decommissioned only a few after in 1932. She was first sailed in 1906. Pictures and history of this ship are at the following websites.

http://www.cimorelli.com/cgi-bin/magellanscripts/ship_dates_...

http://www.zazzle.co.uk/holland_america_lines_nieuw_amsterda...

I cannot confirm that we are related until further research is done. I do not find a Dirk Hijma in my family tree with the birth date of 18 May 1902. However, once I discovered how large this family was, I stopped digging for all the distant relations and focused on those closer to my line.

I did find a website with someone elses research that shows your grandparents Dirk and Froukje Hijma linked to my family as shown below. However, the Dirk Hijma born to Abe Hijma and Aaltje VanDijk was born 23 March 1900 and died at 5 weeks old according to Friesland birth and death records. So I don’t believe this is correct. In any case, here is that website if you wish to check it out.

http://www.genealogieonline.nl/stamboom-vlastra/I1246.php

1 Jan (b: ~1700 unknown)
2 Hein Jans (b: ~1720 Holwerd?, Ferwerderadeel) + Pitjje Abes
3 Abe Heins Hijma (b: 1746 Holwerd, Ferwerderadeel) + Grietje Dirks (2nd wife)
4 Dirk Abes Hijma (b: 1793 Westernijkerk, Ferwerderadeel) + Grietje Andries Wiersma
5 Abe Dirks Hijma (b: 1821 Westernijkerk, Ferwerderadeel) + Trijntje Hiddes VanDijk
6 Dirk Abes Hijma (b: 1852 Westernijkerk, Ferwerderadeel) + Sjutje Hibbes DeVries
7 Abe Dirks Hijma (b: 1879 Het Bildt) + Aaltje Wopkes VanDijk
8 Dirk Hijma (b: 1900 or 1902?) + Froukje Adema
9 Abe Gerritt Hijma (b: 1929 Deinum)
(POSSIBLE PARENTAGE LINE ABOVE – I believe this not to be correct)

According to the Friesland genealogy website, there were no other Dirk Hijma’s born around 1900. So I wonder if his birth date is wrong, or possibly Dirk was his middle name. So until we get more information, it would be hard to research further.

I did a search on all Hijma births in 1902 in Friesland and didn’t come up with a match for your grandfather. In fact there weren’t any births of Hijma 18 May 1902.

Here is the Friesland genealogy site:
http://www.tresoar.nl/

They have for all of Friesland:
birth records 1811-1902
death records 1811-1942
marriage records 1811-1922

I believe your grandmother’s birth record is there as well.
Froukje Adema (b: 27 Oct 1900 Achtkarspelen)
parents: Gerrit Broers Adema + Ymkje Van Dijk

Frouke and Dirk Hijma also had a third child stillborn (actually born before Ymke and Abe):
born/died 31 July 1924

You can pull up the actual handwritten death/birth/marriage records at this Friesland website:
http://www.allefriezen.nl/
Click on the “Bekijk details” button to see the actual handwritten documents.
How’s your Dutch? You may want to use Babelfish or some other online translator. I gave it a quick translate and found that they were living in the town of Boxum at the time of this baby’s death. It also gives his occupation. Levenloos is a stillborn baby.

The town of Deinum is the first town west of Leeuwarden, about 900+ people. The town of Boxum is very nearby, just south of Deinum. They are both in the region of Menaldumadeel within Friesland.

I hope some of this was helpful.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Cindy Turner
I was so pleased to discover this website!! For many years I have been attempting to trace our Hyma (Hijma) family history. I belong to the Canadian branch of the family. If anyone has knowledge of our geneology, I would be most interested in making contact.
Kind regards
Donald Hyma

It was very helpful!! I needed to firm up the tree. I thought I was on the right track. I am so glad I asked about it. My aunt was thrilled with the information. Her husband is a Van Dijk on both sides, and all are Jacob and Jemse to start out with.

His father was an orphan, but he had the marriage certificate of Fike and his wife. When I found a series of records on Genlias I noticed that the parents were missing on all of them. Maybe it has been updated recently.

Most of the men who reached adulthood in this family died very, very young!

Thanks for your help!

June

Thank you Jan! Yes, that's my Grandpa, died 12/27/1975 in Seattle, Washington, USA. He arrived at Ellis Island May 7, 1907 where his contact was an Uncle L. D. Westra, of 47 Wood Street in Paterson New Jersey. I have a poor photocopy of his birth certificate that was obtained in 1946. The spelling there is Wijbe, which I suspect got shortened to Wybe in the tresoar's database, which is a wonderful site. Thanks for that link.

This is where I'm getting confused. I know that KJS (1866)is my great-grandfather. I know that his parents were Jentje Klazes Sieswerda (18??) and Djieuwke Steensma. My problem is I see a Jentje Klazes Sieswerda (1806) who was married to a woman by a different name on another Sieswerda tree that has him listed as the father of KJS (1866). So, I don't know if Jentje Klazes Sieswerda was married twice or if I'm looking at two different men. It seems unlikely that Jentje Klazes Sieswerda (1806) would be the father of KJS (1866) at the age of 60. Could it be his grandfather, with KJS (1773) being his KJS (1866) great-gradfather? I didn't even know there was a KJS 1834!

I sent a reply concerning the tremendous work you provided to me concerning Tjerk Klaas Van Dyke. I fear it must have gone to the wrong place, as I responded through my e-mail account. I am very sorry that you did not get thank you that I wrote.

The history was so well researched, and I learned a lot from you by tracking down the resources you sent! Thank you very, very much! :)

June

Are you asking because they moved to North America? If they immigrated then with names like that it could be anglicized to almost anything.

I am searching for information about my great grandfather Sietze Hoekstra born about 1860. He came to the US about 1880 and married Antje Swart about 1900. They had 2 children, William b. 1901 and Johanna b. 1902.

Feike was the son of Tjerk Klases van Dijk and Jorritje Bierema. He was married to Sytske van der Burg. His son Jakob wasn't the only one who emigrated to the USA. Jakob's brother Pieter preceded him in 1913, and Jakob went to join him together with his brother Jan.
I have the lineage back to a marriage in 1802, if you are interested.

Kind regards,
Marianne

Hello Juningje,

It has been a week since I sent you a large document, containing the complete lineage of Tjerk van Dijk, back to a marriage in 1802. It would be nice to have a confirmation that you have received it, especially since it took up a lot of time to find the data, translate them and put it all together. If for some reason you haven't received it, please let me know.

Kind regards,
Marianne

Which KJS are you speaking of? Klaas Jentjes b. 1773, 1834 or 1866? Can you list your grandma's line as much as you know it? I'd be happy to help you.
