Dear Amy,

Before 1811, there only were church books, and GenLias is about civil registry. Searching becomes more difficult, and you'll find less on line, although a lot has happened in the past years in that area. is a good general purpose website.

For Groningen, is a good website. All (99%) of the church books are indexed there and most pages are available as scans on that website.

For Friesland, try All of the church books have been indexed, but there are no (free) scans of the original documents there.

For Drenthe, is the place to be. All church books have been indexed, but no (free) scans available.

Zuid-Holland is a bit more difficult: many more people lived there, so there is a lot more material to index, so it takes longer to get that on line. For the villages of Zuid-Holland, and index 1695-1811 is available, see, all in Dutch I´m afraid.

The scans are available on that same site, see

The cities all have their own, separate archives: Dordrecht, Rotterdam, the Hague, Amsterdam, Delft, ... just search for "archive + name of city" to find their websites, many have their own index on line. Some (but not all!) of them have joined an effort to combine these indexes on

Good luck!
