My husband is Bob Horick. The family story is that the immigrant Horick--John--came from The Netherlands (at an unknown time) and was in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in 1799. We know that there is a tiny village of Horick in Limburg. Perhaps John Horick came from that village. We would be very pleased to hear from anyone who knows anything about any Dutch Horick. We'd also like to know something of the history of the village of Horick and/or that general area. Was there a lot of emigration in the 18th Century? If so, why?

Does anyone have information regarding these names. They are all Dutch and went to Indonsia early 1900's. Cornelia Johanna Maria (not necesarily the right order) was married to a Mr Kessel. He was either a surgeon or cook in the Dutch Royal Navy. He died in Indonesia. She lived with/married Johannes Joseph (Hans) Rosendahl. Later returned to Holland and married Jan Bouman (Rotterdam). He already had a son Jan from a previous marriage. The both died in Rotterdam in the 1980's. Cornelia could have grown up in Hilversum. Her son Johannes Joseph Rosendahl was raised in Limburg & Heerlen. Can anyone help with this illusive side of my tree?????

Seeking ancestors (or help in any form) for the following:

Johannes Hubertus CLAASSEN, a farmer, born in Melick in 1863 or 1864; married Ida ERDKAMP (b. 10 Jan 1862 Melick) on 14 Feb 1887 in Melick. They had 10 children.

the parents of Johannes Hubertus CLAASSEN:
Andreas Johannes CLAASSEN, also a farmer
Anna Maria MANDERS (died before 14 Feb 1887)

I am going nowhere with this family line, and as you can see, it's my surname! Any insight would be appreciated (for example, do you know of any CLAASSENs who immigrated to Limburg from other countries?).

Thanks in advance for your help.

My husband's name is Hubert Johannes Elisabeth Halmans and I am looking into his family genealogy. The earliest info I have is of Theodoris (Doris) HALMANS born 1858. No info on his wife. His son's names were Johannes Wilhelmus Hubertus HALMANS, born 29 Dec 1880 in Maasbracht, Netherland and died on 26 Aug 1976 in Schaesberg, Netherland. Johannes married Barbara Elisabeth Hubertina HUNTJENS. Theodoris' second son was Jan Hendrikus Hubertus HALMANS who married Maria Catharina LAHAYE. Theodoris' daughters name was Marie HALMANS. My husband's grandfather is Johannes, his father's name is Hubert Theodoor HALMANS and his mother's name is Maria Petronella GRONENSCHILD. They had 4 children. I am looking for info on the Halmans family and any other family branch.

Thank you from Carol & Hugh

Peter Arts, 1824, Mook, Limburg

I am looking for information regarding Peter Arts. I know he was born about 1824 in the Netherlands. His immigration papers say he immigrated to the US "On or about September 1848".

His marriage record says his parents are "Henry Arts and it looks like Jane Cooner (although it could be a variation of that).

Dutch Households in U.S. Population Censuses 1850, 1860, 1870, Compiled by Robert P. Swierenga, said he was from Limburg.

I just found a passenger list for a P. Arts, age 23, farmer, from Mook. He was on the Maria Magdalene which landed in New York on Oct. 9, 1848. From everything I know about Peter Arts, all the pieces fit for this to be him.

I have additional information regarding him, but am trying to go further back. I have not tried to do any research in the Netherlands, because I was not entirely sure where to start. Would this be enough information for someone to attempt to help me? Thanks so much for reading this.

Gerdon in Klimmen

Hi,

My ancestor, Peter Gerdon, son of Peter, was "from" Klimmen. This information is from a 1679 marriage record from Breiten (in present-day Saarland, Germany). I am trying to find any trace whatsoever of the Gerdon family (known spelling variants include Gerdung, Gerdong, Guerdon, Gerton) in Klimmen or the surrounding area. I don't think that he was born in Klimmen, as I checked the birth records last year and was unable to find him. The family had to have lived there for some time for it to be noted as his place of origin on the marriage record. I am looking for ANY traces whatsoever of the Gerdon family in Klimmen or the surrounding area. I found several Gerdon families lived in the present-day region of Namur, Belgium, approximately 75 miles away from Klimmen, and I even found two Pierre Gerdon's, one born in 1653, another in 1660, to Pierre's, in Gesves. However, I have no way to connect either one to my Peter Gerdon.

I am hoping that someone out there can help me in any way. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Sincerely,
Richard

Province Of Limburg in Holland.
Hello:
I am looking for just a simple Map of " Het Hertogdom of Limburg ", I think at the time between 1600 and 1860.
It does not have to be an antique map, I'll be satisfied with a current day map of the area with an indication as to where the border would have been at the time, "Het Hertogdom of Limburg" existed.
If you do not have such a map please let me know where I might find it.
Please Reply and Advice on price and how and where to order.
(Q) How would I go about getting copy's of City or Church records kept in the towns of " Ottersum, Gennep, Milsbeek, Oeffelt, Heyen."
My E-Mail address is < lowland-dutchman@juno.com
Thanks ***William***

De Volksstem translations

Translation of the birth, wedding and death announcements from the Dutch language DePere newspaper DE VOLKSSTEM are now available on my website for the first 5 years of publication, 1889 – 1895. The files are available for downloading in the RTF format. The newspaper was published between 1889 and 1920 in DePere, Wisconsin, a town Green Bay, Wisconsin. That area was heavily settled by immigrants from The Netherlands and Belgium, as well as immigrants from Poland, Germany and Ireland.

The main web site address is

http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/2452/

with the translations located under the DE VOLKSSTEM link.

I would welcome any feed back on the usefulness of these translations.
Netherlands 'CUPPEN' changed to Polish 'CZUBAN'???

Recently I checked some information regarding my great grandmother Stefania Czuban, born in Krzyzanowice, Poland.
I had known that her father was Jan Czuban and mother Wiktoria Smoluch. I again checked Ancestry.com and found that someone had added information to my ancestors and had changed the spelling. Jan Czuban was now listed as Jan Cuppen from Horst, Netherlands. I can see some phonetic similarity in the spellings as Czuban is pronounced Tsuban in Polish. Is Cuppen pronounced Tsuppen? Jan Cuppen list his ancestors as Theodore Cuppen and Petronella Haegans.

Can someone please tell me if they are aware of a CUPPEN member (Jan) leaving Netherlands to marry Wiktoria Smoluch in Poland and having a family there, in or near Krakow.

Please help, as this would be a great link, as the poster has the Cuppen family back to 1700.

Need Help with History of Limburg

Hi,

My ancestor, Peter Gerdon, was married in Urweiler, Kreis Sankt Wendel, Saarland, Germany on 27 August 1679. On the record, it names his village of birth.
"ex Kleinnen/Klimmen??? patria Leodiense"
The village name is not clear. I and a few others saw "Kleinnen," which seems to have never existed, while a woman in Belgium who is helping me could not find Kleinnen, but found Klimmen, in Limburg, Netherlands.

Now, the record names the home village as being in Leodiens, that is, Liege/Luettich/Luik, which is in Belgium. My question: Was Klimmen, or the area around it, ever part of Liege/Luettich/Luik? I cannot find a map dating back to 1679, but see that Klimmen is not very far from Liege, making it possible that it was part of Liege at that time.

If you can help in any way, please contact me.
Thanks in advance.
Sincerely,
Richard Michaels

Wallentheim Village in Netherlands or Germany?

I've got a marriage record from Geleen, Limburg, Netherlands (a Catholic town) that says the groom was born in "Wallentheim" (or Wallertheim). It is pretty clear. Can anybody shed any light on this? The nearest possibilities I've found is a Wollersheim, Germany 35 miles away (Catholic), and a Wallertheim, Germany 110 miles away (but not a Catholic town). Any suggestions on reasonable variations? What does "-theim" mean, and is "-sheim" a reasonable alternative spelling? Any help or suggestions appreciated.

I am looking for the Loison family, which seems to have originated in the Maastricht area (Wittem, Wijlre...). I have found a whole lot of descendants of this family in the 15th-16th century in nearby Dalhem (nowadays Belgium) where the name developped into : "Loison de Genestre dit le Gaen(t)".
Rietstap indicates a family crest which he situates in the Valkenburg area, but he does not indicate a date or any other further particulars.
One of the family members was a close helper or family member of Frederik van WItthem, a knight of the Dukes of Burgundy.
All information on this family is most welcome!

I need to learn some history about Prussia and how it relates to the Netherlands and Belgium (particularly the Limburg provinces of these two countries). Can anyone point me to a website that can educate me on the borders as they were drawn and re-drawn through history, or about the movement of the people of the area as a result of religious, governmental, economic, or other influences? I will post this query on the Prussia board as well. Thanks in advance for your help.
Paul Sharpe and his family were in Heijen in 1872. I would appeciate any information on how I go about searching for local records eg baptisms, marriages etc in this area.
This family left England in 1864 to work building railway lines in Belgium, Holland & Germany. So may also appear in local trade directories.
