Looking for Relatives in Zeeland

My Grandfather, Pieter Kuyper emigrated to the US (Cincinnati, Ohio) about 1914 from Ouwerkerk. He had five brothers and four sisters. His father was Matthewes Kuyper, also of Ouwerkerk. I am visiting the Netherlands in October of this year and want to see the place my family came from. Would be great to meet any relatives of my grandfathers family still in the area.

Birth certificate or birth information

I am trying to locate the birth certificate or birth information for Daniel J.(poss. Johanes) Faas born on 9/10/1873 in Biervliet, Zeeland, Netherlands. Does anyone know how I may go about getting a copy of the birth certificate or the information? There is some question over his father. I found his mother, Janneke Faas married to Cornlias Adriaan Michielsen on 5/19/1864 from the Genlias archive. This was prior to his birth but his last name is Faas. I also found two sisters. One with the maiden name of Michielsen and the other with the maiden name of Faas.

I am looking for any link in Holland to my Van Staan ancestors. They were mostly from Schoondijke, but all from Zeeland. My Great Grandfather Jacob Johannes Van Staan imigrated to Wayne County, New York in 1905 with his wife Magdalena Johanna Catharina Henderijks and 3 children. If anyone has name Van Staan in thier family tree I would really like to get some information. I have everything I could get off of zeeuwen gezocht, which isnt very much. There are very few decendants of the Van Staan line here in the U.S. (names are now Van Stean and Van Steen)and I am wondering if we have not so distant cousins still in Holland that could fill in some gaps in information.

Thanks!

My ggrandfather Peter Vermeulen was born in the Netherlands in October 1860 and was married in Brighton, NY, USA in 1885. I can find no record of emigration for him, so have no sure idea of where he lived in Holland. However, after my ggrandmother died in childbirth in 1892, Peter married a woman he had known in Holland and she was born in Cadzand. Peter's father's name was also Peter (probably Pieter) and his mother's name was Lavina (van der Lyke).

Can anyone else help me find out more about my ggrandfather, how he got here from the Netherlands and his ancestors?

I am traveling to the Netherlands in about a week and I would like to find living relatives to possibly meet while I am there.

My Grandfather Gerard Baas(B. 16 OCT 1904) son of Andries Baas (B. 1878) and Janna Paasse-Baas(B. 1880),came to the US from Kapelle and married Bertha Meyaard. He had many siblings, some of whom are said to have remained in the Netherlands. Several, Thomas, Cornelius and Apalona died during WWII. His brother Jacobus came with him to the US and Married Ethyl Zuidema.

His sisters would have been: Mattje (Elias) DeBourgraff, Jacamina (Lein)Eversdyk, Agatha (John) Sinke. He also had a sister Jacoba who died at 16.

Any info at all on living family members would be fantastic!
Please reply to tccallahan2000@yahoo.com

Thank you,
Cindy Baas

Stijl (Spelled STYLE in the USA) family name

My great-grandfather was Frederick (Frank) Style who was born in Holland around 1877. His parents were named Andrew and Johanna. I found records through Genlias that show an Andries Stijl married to Johanna Verhoeve in 1865 in Dirksland.

On the mother's side of my father was my great-great-grandparents Pieter De Dreu and Neeltje Van De Griek and their daughter Kaatje born Oct. 9 1893 in Yerseke, Holland.

I have traced through the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census records of Islip, Suffolk, Long Island, New York that all my ancestors who came to America to be Oysterman who worked the Great South Bay.

I also found a Gerardus Van Ysseldyke married to a Johanna in America who had listed in the 1900 census a step-son named John Style who I assume to be Johanna's son of a previous marriage.

The problem I've run into is there is not a single United States immigration record of Andries Style (Stijl), Johanna Style (Stijl) Frederick "Frank" Style (Stijl), John Style (Stijl), Peter De Dreu, Neeltje De Dreu, Kaatje De Dreu, or Gerardus Van Ysseldyke.

All my research has shown that these families came from Zeeland or Over-Flakkee, South-Holland and apparently all were Oysterman. Their entry to the United States has been listed to be approximately 1887-1890.

Any information that helps me bridge the gap of my ancestors from the Netherlands to the United States would be greatly appreciated.

Re-uniting with any ancestors from the Netherlands would be even more exciting.

He came across to Kings Lynn, Norfolk, England UK with his brother Johannas (John). He had 13 children, and died in 1913. I wonder whether there is any link here to someone else's family tree? I would love to be able to go back a bit further and find out more about his family from Holland. Does anyone have anything of interest to share?
Balkenende Family History

My father, Jasper Balkenende, was born in Axel, Holland, in 1902 and came to America in 1910. I am trying to find information about his father, Cornelis Balkenende, and mother, Pieternella Heijnsdijk. I have a letter from an Allen Balkenende from Lisse (Netherlands) dated 1962. Unfortunately the letter is in Dutch and not in very good shape. Allen was also doing Balkenende family research. Can anyone connect me with any Balkenende family members in Axel or Lisse?

Looking for family of Martina Nijsse

I'm looking for family photos, trying to connect with cousins in the Netherlands. According to the Korstanje family genealogy book Martina Korstange was born 10/1/1912 and died at Goes 16/2/1998. She was the widow of Cornelis Marinus Nijsse.

The book mentions she had 10 children - I'm pretty sure that some of them are still alive and probably living in the Netherlands. Martina's grandfather was Janus Korstanje who died 5/2/1922 at Wolphaartsdijk. I'm hoping to find someone who has photos of him in the Netherlands (I have a photo I believe is him but it's not labeled). The only way I'm going to do this is to track down relatives in the Netherlands.

I would greatly appreciate any help anyone could be in doing this!

Chris Korstange
Grand Rapids MI

I am researching the following Zeeland ancestors: Albertus Faas, Dirk Faas, Martha deBraal (DeBraal), Tanneke Lourens. I have found no record of any siblings that immigrated to America at or around the same time that they did. (approx. 1857). Consequently, I have not been able to locate anyone else who is working with these names. If you are involved with research on any of these names, please let me know.
Thank you!

Carolyn & Daryl,
I now have the Ghijs back to abt. 1803 A.D.; to a *Pieter Joannes Ghijs--for 3 generations from Eduardus Ghijs. I came across a web site with all of their marriages listed, dates, parents names, and where they were all born. Plus, I have 6 of the 10 children of Eduardus and Hortensia van de Wege that were here in the US/Illinois.
http://www.genlias.nl/en/page0.jsp (copy & paste this into your browser) The web page can be viewed in Dutch or English by clicking on "Nederlands" in the upper right hand corner to indicate which you prefer. I think you will both find this site very valuable if you haven't used it before.
Try putting in only the surname and Zeeland Province, Oostburg to get started with. I haven't looked up the Verbeke's yet on the site. There is 2 more generations of the van de Wege on the site. I have not updated my postings yet on RootsWeb since the beginning of the summer so these are new findings.
Sandy (sljuhl1234)---gsjuhl@peoplepc.com
I believe that Carolyn and I have been in touch recently.

I have been using Zeeuw's Archief to track the ancestry of the Suwijn family in Zeeland (Cadzand and Retranchement). In going through the files, there appears a name "Abraham Suwein", which is very close to a number of my relations named "Abraham Suwijn". This Suwein character was apparently imprisoned several times. I am trying to determine if this person is in my lineage; and if so, what crime he was imprisoned for. I have e-mailed the web site, but I don't speak Dutch, so no one has responded. Any advice on finding out details about Abraham Suwein (birth date and place, reason for imprisonment) or how to obtain this information would be appreciated.
Barbara

I am looking for information about my great-grandparents--Peter Suwyn (or Suwijn, or Zuwijn) and Dena Vanhanengan (or Hanengen, or Van Hoangen). Peter was born in 1870; Dena was born in 1874. They immigrated from the Netherlands to the U.S. (Wisconsin) in early 1890s. I would like to know which provinces, and towns or villages in the Netherlands they came from--we think perhaps somewhere in Zeeland; but any information would be appreciated.
Charles VAN PRICE

I am researching a mystery. This is the story as told by my grandmother.

Charles Van Price was born in the mid 1800s. He came to the U.S. in 1874, and went to Dousman, Wisconsin. He worked for Mr. Dousman, later moved to Little Chute, Wisconsin, then to Phlox, Wisconsin in 1887. Tragedy struck however, because he, my great grandfather, decided to see Holland again. He sold his land earlier, and was now one of the wealthiest men in that part of the state. While staying with his daughter, Effie, in Waukesha, Wisconsin in 1922, he went grocery shopping for her and was not seen again. His daughter found he had withdrawn all his savings (a very sizeable amount) and left for Europe. They traced him to Antwerp, Belgium — then all trace was gone. He was never heard from again. After investigating, it was assumed that he returned to Holland from Milwaukee.

Charles is originally from the Zeeland area of the Netherlands and his last name was written as VAN PARIJS in the old Dutch records. If anyone can help me find his final destination, possibly using cemetery records, etc. I assume he went back to Zeeland. You can get more detailed info on Charles at my family tree website - http://www.zalewskifamily.net/family/individual.php?pid=I031...

Any leads, tips or helpful information would be greatly appeciated. Thanks in advance!

Does anyone know if the Zeeuwsarchief will eventually include birth registries? I access the Zeeuwsarchief frequently, but am frustrated that they do not have birth records. Can anyone help me on this? (I have also tried Genlias, but they are not much help either.) Maybe I should also ask: Were all births required to be recorded? Was it common not to record a child's birth? Thanks for your help.
