Hello,
I don't know if it is true. It could also be possible, that, what you suggested, they came originally from Turkey. In the dutch independence war (1568-1648) the Spanish had turkish prisoners of war. The had to row in the spanish boats. In 1604 several of them escaped from a boat after an attack on the boat by prince Maurits of Oranje. They disappeared in Flanders between Brugues and Sluit (nowadays Zeeland-NL). http://www.meertens.knaw.nl/nfd/detail_naam.php?naam=Turk
