I am looking for the parents of Klaas (Klass?, Klas?) Smit who was born 3 September 1897 in the Netherlands, and died in 1943 at Unimak Island, Alaska while serving as a US Merchant Marine. I usually don't try to research people in Europe because I am unfamiliar with where the information is. But I do have a little information on him that I am hoping will help someone to point me to possible online sources.
Klaas had a twin sister, Annie, who was head of a boys orphanage during WWII. And, he had a brother, John, who was a principal of a Rotterdam School. I found this information in an article in the Ellensburg Daily Record newspaper, August 26, 1942 (Washington state, USA). I have attached this article. Another article I have found says he served in the Dutch Navy in WWI.
I have also created a Find A Grave memorial for Klaas with articles that explain his death here:http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=80...
Is there any way that I might be able to locate his parents and the cemetery they are buried in using only online data sources? I appreciate any help you can give me.
