I was looking for information on calheta de nesquim, and came upon your message.
I just spoke to some people in San Leandro that know the Fonseca family. All the people I sent cards to are deceased. I am trying to get some information on the remaining family members.
Aunty Lorraine

Marriage Records Maria Fonseca and Arthur Silva

My grandparents Maria Ferreira Fonseca and Arthur Leao Pinto da Silva were married on May 8, 1921 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Maria came to America from Calheta de Nesquim, Pico, Acores, Portugal. Arthur came to America from Lisbon, Portugal. Maria's birthday was July 21, 1894 and Arthur's birthday was March 1, 1878. I am looking for a record of their marriage like a Marriage Certificate or a Marriage License. I haven't been able to find anything that verifies their marriage date or location. It is possible that they were married at the Chapel of Immaculate Conception in New Bedford, MA - Can anybody help me look up their records - or advise me how to find the license or certificate. maryellenoliphant@live.com thanks Mary Oliphant

Hi, my great grandfather was from Funchal, Madeira and that's where I get my last name. His name was José Figueira. But I think he was the only one of his siblings who left for America (he spent some time in Trinidad, too); one stayed in Madeira and a couple went to South Africa. I know that there's some still in South Africa.
Do you know anyone that has first hand knowledge of your grandparents? I was able to talk to his daughter. (my great aunt)

I'm so happy to meet another Figueira, I've only met Figueroa, but they're not Portuguese.

ALGARVE RECORDS ONLINE!

I was aimlessly Googling and got quite excited when I came across this site;

http://www.genealogiadoalgarve.com

This is a genealogical database of vital records from the Algarve, which have been transcribed from church and parochial records and can be accessed over the internet.

The free searchable online database has 300 000 records of births, deaths and marriages from 1575-1905. You can search the records by surname.

The site was only launched last month, but it is invaluable for anyone searching for their roots in the Algarve, particularly in the parish of Portimao, and is especially useful if you don't live in Portugal, because now we can just search online!

Portuguese Sea Captain marries Sofia del Aguila of Peru

Portuguese Sea Captain marries Sofia del Aguila of Peru (Sofia b:1871 +/- 5 years).

The story told over the many years is that Sofia del Aguila met this Portuguese man on a ship while returning home from boarding school and married him.

Sofia del Aguila later visited New York some time around the 1920's to visit her niece, Sofia Goehns; who had recently lost her mother Thereza del Aguila-Goehns. I have been told Sofia Goehns was named after her Aunt, so I am assuming her Aunt's name is also Sofia.

If you should have any knowledge of these people or a story sounding similar please respond. Thank You.
I am looking for information on any distant relatives of my grandfather that may still live in The Azores or the U.S.

Manuel Oliveira was born in The Azores about 1902, immigrating to the U.S about 1919. He joined the service in 1919 at Fort Slocum, NY, discharged in 1922 from Fort McDowell, CA. He married Margaret Fernandez and lived in Fall River, Mass. They had four children: Doreene, Ruthie, Cobby, Dorothy.

He had a brother "Tony" who also ended up in Fall River. I am still verifying the rest of his siblings and their exact birthplace in The Azores.

He was in the army from 1943-1946.I have pictures of him and his wife.
I really do wish I could find more information so that I can get to know some of my relatives. I don't know a single one of them.
My father's name was Manuel Marcelino Pereira. He was born in Portugal (Cape Verde). Changed his name to Perry when he came to the U.S. He supposedly has brothers, John, Joseph and Anthony. I was told that his father's name was Charles Pereira and his mother's name was Emelia. Also he had a sister (Carolyn). Manuel came to Philadelphia, PA somewhere around the late 40's after getting out of the U.S. Army.

Fantastic! I'm working on a gift for my parents on their heritage. My greatgrandparents emigrated from Sao Jorge, Azores in 1909. They were Joe or Jose Baptiste and Anna Mattos. The children born in the Azores were Manuel, Mary, Joe, Annie, Isabel, John (or Jack). When they settled in California, Antone, Frank and Barbara were born. They eventually settled in Modesto, Stanislaus County, California. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to find additional information on my great-grandparests. Joe Baptiste (AKA Jose) and Anna Mattos were born in the 1870s in Sao Jorge, Azores, Portugal. They immigrated to California with their children, Manuel, Mary, Joe, John (AKA Jack), Isabel, and Annie. They arrived in the San Francisco Bay area in 1909, later moving to the San Joaquin Valley. Three additional children were born here: Antone, Frank, and Barbara. They finally settled in the Modesto, CA area and most of their offspring remain in the area. If anyone has any information, please let me know.

Hello I am looking for any information about my family in Portugal and Brazil.

Antônio José/Joaquim Brandão, was born in Loureira, Braga, Portugal the son of Jacinta Pereira Brandao and Andre Pereira da Silva (first cousins). His maternal uncle, Archbishop Caetano Brandao, banned him from Portugal for "bad behavior" (mentioned by Frei Sebastiao de Resende e Silva in "Historia Genealogica") and Antônio immigrated to Brazil in 1795, married Lina Ferreira, the daughter of a Portuguese soldier and a daughter of a Camandri chief, and became a very successful planter in Manaquiri, despite the Cabanagem revolution.

I have not yet found the names of all Antônio's children. I do know that one of his daughters, Leocadia, married the Sicilian national Henrique Antony, a successful businessman. Another daughter, Amalia Maria, married Portuguese national Alexander Paulo di Brito Amorim, the First Consul of Portugal and owner of the first steamship company in Brazil. I am also looking for information on one of their children specifically, Arthur Napoleão de Brito Amorim who married one of the daughters of Joao Capistrano da Silva Mota (also known as "Coronel Mota").

Any information is kindly appreciated. Thanks.

Not that I know of, but I have never gotten back that far with my Simons family.
Mine were Ferris or Farias or Faris Simao.
They arrived in the Fall River Massachusetts area around 1883. I think two men arrived first an uncle and nephew as mariners and then brought the family over.
Antonio F. Simons and Maria Periera were the grandparents in the family. In the early 1890s the family set up a second camp in Bermuda. Well in the 1920s various parts of the family swung back and forth between the US and Bermuda.
There are still some Simons family members along Elm Street in Somerset Mass.
I also have DeSilva. In our case Pimentel DeSilva or Dias Pimentel. They are all in Bermuda so far as I know. I am not sure where they were from, but I suspect Nordeste, Sao Miguel.

Jessie
