Seeking ancestors (& descendants) of Samuel WERNLI (later WERNLE) who 1st married Elizabeth Maria ZELLER on 26Feb1854 in Highland, Madison Co, Illinois, USA. I have 4+ generations above Elizabeth in Schänis. According to all American sources found, Samuel was born 21Jan1829 in Thalheim, Brugg, Aargau, Switzerland. I have been unable to find him in Swiss records. Who were his parents? Is he in fact one J.S. WERNLI who served in the US Civil War? His 2nd wife was Magdalena RUDOLPH. Who was the 3rd? And when did the 1st wife die?
Samuel came to America circa 1848-1849, but I haven’t found the exact ship info yet. He filed his intention to be naturalized in 1860, in Madison County, Illinois, USA. He was naturalized on 06May1874, also in Madison Co, IL. He farmed in the area thru almost 1900. In the 1855 and 1865 state census, he is listed in Saline Township, Madison Co. In the Jun1880 US federal census, he is listed just across the county line in Millersburg, Bond Co, IL. In the 1892 plat book, he is listed with 116 acres at what is today 12929 Landolt Road, Highland, IL 62249. 1873 plats show this land owned by Garrett Crownover; deed info has yet to be found. Samuel’s will was filed 24Jun1899 in Madison Co. He died 12Jun1900. The funeral service was held 14Jun1900 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Highland, and he was buried in the catholic cemetery there (St. Joseph’s).
Samuel had 8 children by 3 wives. 1st wife was Elizabeth Maria ZELLER, m. 26Feb1854. She was born on 10Oct1834 in Schänis, Sankt Gallen, Switzerland. I have 4+ generations above her. She apparently died after 1864-65 (youngest known child) in Illinois, but this data has yet to be found. They had 5 children in Illinois born 15Aug1855 thru abt. 1865.
2nd wife was Magdalena RUDOLPH, m. 03Nov1867 in Madison Co. She brought at least one child to the marriage, Mary Wiggers b. unknown and died before 1900, according to Samuel’s obituary. Samuel and Magdalena were only married about 2 years before her death in 1869, apparently due to cholera during an outbreak. She was mass-buried in the cholera section in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Their only child, Magdalena WERNLE b. 01Jan1868, later married Philip WILLMANN on 26Feb1889. He later served as the executor of Samuel’s will.
3rd wife was Maria UNKNOWN. Her name has been transcribed as Schirnia, Sciniania, Scheurmann, and Schoerli. I believe the latter. I have her born on 11Apr1838 in Switzerland, source unknown, and died about 1896, source unknown. This marriage produced children nos. 7 and 8. #7 Frank lived 1874-late1949 and married Minnie BERNER in 1904 and had 5 kids. #8 Caroline apparently lived to adulthood, but all I have is born about 1876 and died before 1976. Any descendants?
Any info?
