I have just found that my Hermann family that settled in Pittsburgh about 1850 originally came from Biel-Benken. Is anyone researching this area? Anyone researching Hermanns? I am new to Swiss research. What is the difference between Basil Land and Basil Stadt?

Thank you for this information. I will try to locate a male Bader for the DNA test. I will also check the Border Y DNA page. This is the first time that I have run across the Border name in my research. Up until you mentioned this, I only knew of Bader and Bauder. Again thanks for the help!

Jeanette

I am looking for any information on the Lange/Hobi Family. August F. Lange was born in Austria on 12 May 1857. We were told he crossed the border and married Marie/Maria Hobi, born 08 Feb. 1852 in Switzerland. They had two children there, Ida, born May of 1881 and August F. Lang, Jr., born 27 Sept. 1882 to the best of our knowledge. They then immigrated to the USA, where the rest of the family was born. We were told that they lived toward the Austria/Italian border. I have this address from an address book from 1908, which is not complete:Miss Mary Hobi, Sils i Doml., Graubunden, Switzerland. This is the best I can read from the writing. We also have the information that the grandparents were buried in an avalanche while on a sleigh ride. I have a picture of August and Maria if this would help. If anyone knows of this family, could you please contact me. Thank you. Deborah Woodward
Re: Basel Birth Record Information

The first problem is to determine if your ancestor comes from the city of Basel, or from the Canton called Basel-Stadt, or, conceivably, from the Canton called Basel-Landschaft. The old Canton of Basel was divided in 1833 to form Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft. Basel-Stadt contains the city of Basel plus the municipalities of Bettingen and Riehen.

In the event that your ancestor was in fact born in the Canton of Basel-Stadt, the church records you need should be on the FamilySearch.org web site, confusingly and, in my opinion, incorrectly labeled as "Basel City Church Books". If you browse this collection, the first frame is a menu of the parishes included in the collection. You will find Bettingen and Riehen on the menu, so this is a collection of the church books of the Canton of Basel-Stadt, not only those of the city of Basel. Digging deeper into the background information associated with this collection, I eventually found the German title of the collection, which removes the ambituity: Basel-Stadt Kirchenbücher. I can't imagine any Swiss would confuse "Basel-Stadt", the Canton, with the city of Basel!

The next problem is the name of your ancestor. If you find her listed both as Fischer and as Bohringer (probably this should be Böhringer), it might be that her parents were not married when she was born. Sometimes we find notations in the church or civil registration records that show a child originally under her mother's name, and then a later notation citing a legal decision of paternity, such that the child would henceforth be known under the paternal surname. There are other possible explanations. In addition to the surname, you show the given name as either Elisabeth (this is the German spelling of Elizabeth) or Maria Elizabeth. The longer name is likely to be the "real" one; children were often given several names at baptism, but may have used only one of them during adult life.

Next, if you fail to locate the birth in the images on the FamilySearch.org web site, and you decide to try the civil registration offices for either Basel-Stadt or Basel-Landschaft, you will have to decide which date of birth is the real one! You probably won't get much help from the civil registration offices in trying to guess which date to look for, though with the names of the parents, they might be more lenient.

It is always a good idea to do a very thorough search in the places where your Swiss ancestor lived as an adult, before attempting to make the jump into the Swiss records. Sources such as immigration and naturalization records, death certificates, obituaries, and family correspondence should all be checked. Check any sources you may have overlooked, in hopes of removing some of the ambiguity.

The civil registration office (Zivilstandsamt) for the Canton of Basel-Stadt is at www.zivilstandsamt.bs.ch . In the Canton of Basel-Landschaft, there are 6 regional offices at Arlesheim, Binningen, Laufen, Liestal, Sissach and Waldenburg. When looking for the civil registration offices in the German-speaking cantons, the most reliable method is to find the official web site of the canton or city, then look for an "A-Z" tab or a site map. Then you look for Zivilstandsamt (singular) or Zivilstandsämter (plural) under the letter Z. Each canton manages its own civil registration, so the process used by any particular office may vary.

Good luck with your search!

John McCoy
(RealMac@aol.com)

Greetings! I am hoping that someone can help to steer me in the right direction to help me find the birth record for my great, great, grandmother who, according to records I found, was born in Basel, Switzerland. According to my records, she was born on 22 Oct 1865 (but it could be 1864.) I figure there are civil registration records for Basel but I have no idea where to look for them.

If anyone out there can help me, it would be most appreciated. Her name was:

Elisabeth (or Maria Elizabeth) Fischer (or maybe Bohringer, bepending on what records you look at!) Her father's name was Charles and her mother's name was Barbara Bohringer.

Thank you again and take care!

Mike

If they were really married or baptised in Muttenz, you should be able to find them in the church records of Muttenz, which are available for a small processing fee through your local LDS Family History Center. The records go all the way back to 1624. They appear to have been microfilmed twice, once in 1948 and again in 1966. The more recent filming is likely to be of better quality, otherwise they would not have bothered!

John McCoy
(RealMac@aol.com)

Micro film of the church records are available through the LDS Family History Centers. However, they are hard to read due to deterioraton and because German hand written gothic script is challenging.

Arnold Meyer 1878/Emilie Freda Wagnor/Maria Senn1887/Maria1875

Arnold married and divorced Emilie Freda Wagnor (remarried Johann Mastling in Germany and had a son named Gerhardt) in Switzerland/Germany and had two children with her, Emma and Rose. He immigrated to the states, Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey in 1909 and Emma was sent a year later. He married Elizabeth Maria Senn aka Mary and had two children,Maria Elizabeth MEYER 1912 – 1991 and Rose Elizabeth MEYER 1917 – 1984. She divorced him *at this point I believe it is safe to say they all divorced him except the last one because he died while they were still married* and married Henry Altofer, a last name the girls chose to use instead. In the 1920 census, Elizabeth Senn (Lizzie Moyer) is living with a woman named Rose Mayer as well as her too girls so the divorce took place after 1920. Arnold is listed as a lodger. He then married a woman named Elizabeth and is listed in the 1930 census. We believe he died in 1938.

I am looking for those who have any connection with my Meyer side of the tree in any form. I would love to share pictures and information with you and would greatly appreciate the same.
I have photos taken by Emma of individuals she was friends with specifically Ed Ullmer, Elizabeth possibly Ullmer, Bridget Comphrey and a few others who lived in Paterson, New Jersey in 1919's and 20's.

Hope to hear from one, some, or many.

Thank You.

If you live in these areas and could do a look up for me on Arnold or Wagnor or Mastling, I would be grateful.
He had 4 children in Switzerland,
Jacob, Ursula, ? , and Sarah, and 4 more in PENN.
Petersburg WV is named after him, as for some reason his surname became PETERS/PETERSON in this country.

I am trying to trace the decendants of the above named, George William YOUNG. It is believed that he was born circa 1832 in Hoyingston, Switzerland as a British Subject. This information is from the 1871 Census records of England as at this time he was residing in Attercliffe in Sheffield married to Phylliss Talbot (to make things more complicated she was born at sea). At this time they had several children sopme of which were born spain, Germany and France prior to 1871

George is described through the 1871 cesus records and throughout the following as a coal minor/Hewer

Q. What would he have been doing travelling to all these countries as a minor or could he have been involved in the military and if surely his family would not have travelled with him. Could he have been involved in the convict ships?

His father must also have been a BS in Switzerland at his time of birth what would he have been doing there. Will there be any records of his birth in Switzerland or census records? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

A group of us Geesey (etc.) researchers have begun a genetic Y-DNA analysis of the Geesey family tree. Our lineage originated in Canton Basel, Switzerland. To date we have identified over a dozen immigrants from Switzerland to America in the 18th and 19th Centuries. While we have not been able to establish conclusive genealogical relationships for many of them, we hope to ascertain whether we are indeed cousins through genetic analysis. We are seeking men with any of the related surnames to join the project by contributing a sample for analysis.

For more information about this project please go to the Gysi Project website at FamilyTree DNA:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Gysi/

For more information about our origins in Canton Basel Switzerland go to my website:
http://people.musc.edu/~geesey/GysiLineage.htm

You may also contact me directly via e-mail.
I have information that my g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g grandfather Daniel Bader was born in Basel Langenbruck Switzerland in February 1590 and Christened in 1591. I am not sure if this is Basel-Land or Basel Stadt. He married a lady by the name of Appollonia (last name not given) about 1619. I am trying to learn more about him and his family. I read something in my research that leads me to believe that his father may have been Claus (Klaus)Bader born about 1570 and died 1660. Sometime this family moved to the Baden-Wurttenberg area of Germany. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Jeanette (Bader) Nichols

I am searching for any information about William Tschudin 1864-1934. He emigrated in the 1880s with brother Albert and had a brother August. His parents were Johannes and Anna Margrith Straumann. I believe they lived in Sissach. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry, we have no mention of Johannes Singeisen b. abt 1787 in Lausen. Most births in our branch seem to be in Liestal. There probably is a connection of some sort as Lausen and Liestal are both in the canton of Basel as far as I know. There are only five people bearing the surname Singeisen in England - my father in law, my husband, two sons and me so no-one else to ask here I'm afraid. I hope you manage to get the information you are looking for.

I only have information on the SINGEISEN family from early 1800s in Bessarabia, Southern Russia, to present day. The Schabo/Chabag church records show Johannes Singeisen, b. abt. 1787, Lausen, Basil, and d. 28 Nov. 1852, Chabag. He married, evidently, in Bessarbia. Do any of your records match?

I am married to Nicolas Singeisen. He has part of a family tree. The first entry is Sebald Singeisen marrying Katharina Zeller and a list of their children born between 1542 and 1562. The last entry is Albert Singeisen born 1914 (he is still alive). My German is minimal but there is a note on the bottom which says something about records before 1542 being destroyed. Would this be of any use to you?

Walmer immigrated to the US, was in the US Army in World War I, and died in Sitka, Alaska, USA 27 Jan 1981.

Would love to connect with Swiss relatives of John H.
