I am also looking for connections. Alexander is one of my Great Grandfathers. Most in my line are spelled Toney. I am also having difficulty verifying Eliz. Gilliam wife of Alexander Kaster Toney. Her father is said to be Benjamin and that she was born in Virginia. But most have her connected to Benjamin Gillam from Boston. Would you like to collaborate our information and see if we might be able to solve some of these questions?

Richard, (My GrandMother) Alva Mozzini and Auntie Ida had a Uncle who had them sign some paper work after the death of Ugo that turned over ownership of a Hotel. (Richard told me this last time I was able to speak to him.)

As for family living in Lodano I have not had success in reaching any. Most of my family information came from cousins living in or around Eureka Ca.

The best places to start would be Local churchs as they have records. I will see what I can find.

Calvin Sereno Porter

Can anyone help me find information about the Jacomelli family prior to 1861. My great-grandfather was Carlo Jacomelli born 1838 in Prugiasco, in the Canton of Ticino. According to Carlo's marriage certificate his father was Giovanni Jacomelli whose occupation was Farmer.
In 1861 Carlo was in London with his brothers Luigi, Guiseppe, Battisster, Ambrose and Antony - all were involved in the restaurant trade. Guiseppe, Carlo and Anthony later went on to establish restaurants in Bristol, Bath, Swansea, Leeds, and the Isle of Wight.

Hi Nan, This post is an old one and am not sure if you are even on rootsweb anymore but worth a shot. I am interested in the Stahly family as it related to my Ziehr line from Illinois. Isaac Stahly was the son of Isaac Stahly and Anna Dellenbach of Canton Bern. Isaac I's father was Isaac Stahly (married to Marie Kohler). Trying to learn where my Isaac born 1857 and his brother Alexander born 1855 would have been born. Have seen conflicting info. Have seen in "Oberhol" in Canton Bern and have also seen Canton Neuchatel. Can you help?

Re: John/Jean Marro

The first step is to track down ALL records concerning your Swiss ancestor in the US: check ALL censuses, passenger lists, naturalization records, deeds, wills, family papers, newspapers, tombstone, vital records, etc. The goal is to locate 3 facts:

1. The full name of the person.

2. His exact date of birth.

3. The name of the town where he was born or where his family had hereditary citizenship.

There are very few indexes at the cantonal level in Switzerland, and even fewer at the federal level. Without the name of the town, it is extremely difficult to make the connection. Also, since given names in Switzerland are likely to run in the family, there will probably be several baptisms with approximately the same name around the same period, so without the exact date of birth, you will have a tough time proving that any record you found was your ancestor, and not just a cousin with the same name.

Religion is sometimes a useful clue. For example, if your ancestor was Catholic, you can probably rule out most of the cantons of Geneva, Vaud, Jura, Bern, and Neuchâtel, which by the 1880's had only a very small number of Catholic families.

If you can identify the name of the town, and if the person was born before 1875 (records after this are usually not open to the public, because of very strict Swiss privacy laws), the next step is to check the catalogue of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City (on FamilySearch.org) to see if the church records or civil registration records for that town have been microfilmed. If so, you can have them sent to your local LDS Family History Center for a very small processing fee -- by far the easiest and least expensive way to trace your Swiss roots. If the records have not been microfilmed, there may be other options, depending on which canton you need.

John McCoy
(RealMac@aol.com)

One step you can take right away is to look for your Mivelaz and Buman families in the censuses for the Canton of Fribourg, 1811, 1818, and 1834, which were recently added to the Historical Record Collections on FamilySearch.org. I think you should be able to find both families, with ages, maiden names, and places of origin.

These records are on the internet for the first time, so it would be useful for other researchers if you could post a report of whatever you find, on the Fribourg message board.

Among other possibilities, the census records may give you additional clues that will help you narrow your search to a particular parish, and you might be able to identify relatives. With that information, you might be able to locate an account of the part of the family that remained in Switzerland on Geneanet.org or one of the Swiss genealogy sites.

John McCoy
(RealMac@aol.com)

The birth record should be where they were born. That would probably be where the child was baptized. The pastor was supposed to keep a record of all baptisms, not just those for citizens of his parish. But, remember that the original records will most likely be at the cantonal archives, not in the local church.

The usual procedure was that the pastor in the place where the child was baptized would send a copy of the record, usually at the request of a family member, to the pastor in the town where the family had citizenship. Then the pastor in that town would scribble a copy that record in some odd corner of his baptismal registers. Sometimes you will find a separate section for these out-of-parish baptisms, sometimes they will be inserted wherever there was a little space, completely out of chronological sequence. Sometimes (especially for girls) the record was not forwarded at all. Under the best circumstances, the church records in the parish of citizenship will tell you exactly where each baptism took place, a great way to follow the migrations of your family and a way to locate "missing" branches of the family.

If the child was born in the Canton of Zürich before 1875, first check to see if those records are on microfilm at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. If so, you can have them sent to you local LDS Family History Center for a very small processing fee. These are exactly the same microfilms you would have to use if you traveled to the cantonal archives of Zürich. The records are organized by parish, and some parishes contained more than one village, changed boundaries over time, etc. Consequently, if you don't find the village by doing a place name search in the Family History Library catalogue, you should try again with a "key word" search, and if that fails, check the internet or other sources to see if your village was part of some other parish.

John McCoy
(RealMac@aol.com)

Hi Bill,

I have just discovered ancestors of Louis and Nannette. Nannette is actually a nickname, her real name was Anne and surname Buman, to clear up all those derivatives floating out there online. Louis and Anne were married in the city of Fribourg on 07/01/1832. Louis recieved a passport to emigrate to the USA on 05/06/1854. He emigrated with his wife Anne (Nannette), 9 of his children (Nicolas, Pauline, Nanette, Auguste, Marguerite, Marie, Laurent, Francois, and Ernest), along with an employee named Jean-Joseph Kasler. The passport had a brief description of Louis as Hair: Blond, Bart: Redhead, Eyes: grey, Nose: normal, Face: round, Mouth: big, chin: round, forehead: normal. Louis was the son of Jean-Pierre Mivelaz and Rosa Crottet. Anne Buman was the illegitimate daughter of Ignace Buman and Catherine Huber, with a corrected birth date of April 3rd, 1813, not in 1812 as most US records dictate. This discrepency could have surfaced from the many renditions of the last name sought out. I know it's been a while since you posted this, but hopefully you will get this information.

Best Regards,
Adam Mivelaz

Hi John,

I have been in touch with a Mivelaz over in Switzerland and in touch with the state archives and the cantonal archives. They have sent me copies of some microfilms, but only this one time since I'm so far away from Switzerland. It has given me some clues and hints, but still have gaps. You mentioned that you may have a way to help me out with church records in Fribourg? Would you be able to help me? I have verified that Louis Mivelaz was born and baptised in the City of Fribourg and resided there until he got his passport in 1854 to emigrate to the USA. Also verified that the spouse's surname is Buman to clear up all the renditions so many family searchers assumed per US census records, etc. Still would like to trace Mivelaz tree beyond Louis's Grandfather, Nicolas-Sylvian Mivelaz.

Thank you,
Adam

Where to go depends on what you hope to find.

Church and civil registration records up to 1875 (or possibly a little later) are open to the public. In most cantons, these records are at the cantonal archives, not in the town archives or churches, and you will probably have to look at them on microfilm, in order to prevent damage to the originals. You can find out the local situation by looking for a web site for the archives of that canton.

Official vital records after 1875 (or possibly a little later) are not open to the public, due to very strict Swiss privacy laws and an entrenched bureaucracy. These records will be in the custody of the civil registration authorities. There may be one office for the canton, or several district or local offices. Again, there will be information about this on the internet, and probably a link on the web site of the cantonal archives.

For many cantons, all or most of the church and civil registration records that are open to the public have been microfilmed and are in the collections of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, from which they can be sent to your nearest LDS Family History Center for a small processing fee. That's how most Swiss genealogy is done. This is by far the easiest, most productive, and least expensive method, if the records were microfilmed by the Family History Library. The records for a very few cantons are now digitized.

Apart from the church and civil registration records, there are many other sources that might be of interest. Most historical records will probably be at the cantonal archives. Some of these archives have their complete catalogues on their web sites, others haven't reached that point yet. Also, most towns (or "communes") have their own archives (some of the smaller towns share an archives facility). What would you expect to find in the town archives? Probably the most important local records would be the records of the families that have hereditary citizenship there, records of the town council (sometimes stretching back many centuries), and local property maps. Some local archives have collected family histories as well. The town archives may not have regular hours, you would have to inquire at the town hall, but it is usually possible to contact someone in the town government in advance through the town's web site. Sometimes an inquiry about a family that left Switzerland 200 years ago will be forwarded to a local historian -- and that may be enough to put you in touch with relatives who still live there!

With help from the town archives, it is sometimes possible to identify the exact house where your family lived. In some places, you might find a pew in the church with the family name or arms carved into it. You might find artifacts in a local museum that can be connected with your family.

As a general rule, you should do as much research as possible before you travel to Switzerland. The more you already know when you hit the ground, the more what you see is likely to mean to you. Advance research will also help you identify the places where important records are likely to be found, and in some cases you will be able to identify the specific documents that you need to see.

As you suggest, yes, it is very important to identify the town where your family had hereditary citizenship, but at least in some parts of Switzerland and at some periods, families may have moved around frequently. You just have to follow the clues wherever they may lead.

John McCoy
(RealMac@aol.com)

Hi! I'm going to Switzerland partly to research this fall-- has anyone here had experience doing this? I seem to understand that I need to go to the "Heimatort" (ancestral hometown) rather than the actual birthplace to find records? Does that sound correct? Thanks for any advice you can give! =)

Hello! There are a lot of Grosjeans in my family heritage. Although, I don't know if the Henry Louis Grosjean you refer to is in my family or not. I have a Henry born circa 1875 (not sure which birthplace), who was the son of Nicholas Grosjean and Christena. Do not know Christena's maiden name. Does this sound familiar? Would you like to exchange more information privately?

Joseph was my 3rd great grandfather. I have researched the Senn family and Butler's Rangers for some years now. I do have a couple of stories about Joseph garnered from several other trees with connections to mine. I have, however stalled at finding Joseph's parents and thereby being able to follow his roots back to Switzerland.

Since Joseph and his ancestors were Empire Loyalists, this is one of the connections I have tried to follow with limited success. If you have an interest in the stories I have, you can e-mail me at rob.arm@sasktel.net and I can attach what I have; perhaps by sharing trees, we can help each other out.

I also have dug into the Windeckers,

Bob
Hello. My great grandmother, Alvina Nussbaum was born in or near Bern in 1860. I remember my grandfather told me that he thought that was her married name and that her maiden name was Mays or Maize. My grandfather was told his father was a conductor on a N. Y. train and killed in a train accident. He never knew his father. His birth certificate has another last name of McGravey as his father. So the mystery expands.

Since you posted your query in 1999 this is going to be a bit late in the game BUT

I had a great uncle (Henry Gravesmuehl) who married a lady by the name of Amelia Weibel. The Gravesmuehls all emigrated from Rehna Germany to what is now Zion Luutheran Church in Akron (Zions Gemeinde von Akron) I had always though that Amelia was German (like the rest of the parish) but now find that her father was Peter C Weibel (b.1837 in Switzerland) and Mother was Lena Weibel would was German.(b 1838)and they lived in Canton, Ohio

How Uncle Henry and Aunt Amelia ever found one another is a mystery.

I am unsure if his wife was Catherina Roode or if she was the mother of Maria Elizabeth Lambrecht (1887-1971) in South Africa. Maria was married to another DFJS (1878-1970). He was the son of the DFJS mentioned above. I am trying trying to locate siblings and children to DFJS (the 1840-1922 one) and also to Catherina Roode.
With clues from generous researchers here, I've reached a second conclusion that seems to be buttressed by more facts, and has led to me finding the missing relatives. The city is Seewis, not Davos. The family name in Seewis was "Fausch", which became "Faust" once they arrived in Iowa, and then "Foust" today.

I found a website that centers around Samuel Frederick Ischy, who was my ggg-grandfather (Jan, who has commented on this thread already is my dad's cousin, I believe). This what the site says:
Anna Krieg ("Mrs. Fred") had two children by another
(probably second, later) husband (Unknown Frederick):
Lena Frederick Carrigan
Emma Frederick Wilson

Don't know if that's his first or last name, but it's a start. Here's that address:
http://users.rcn.com/oweigang/ischy/

We have a Maria Scheidegger in my husband's family, born in Switzerland in the 1500s. I do not have any more information on her, except that she married a Benedicht or Benedict Lerch, who was born in 1558. If there's a connection, let me know!

Valentine lived in Drummond several years as the husband of Sidonia DeBarcsy. I can find no marriage record. He traveled with Sidonia and her midget son, Little Nick. He left her and went to Texas. We do have some pictures in the Museum of him, Madam and Little Nick.
