12 Jul 1922 "Pasadena Star News" -- "Pioneer of City Summoned; Was Here Since 1874 - Mrs. Margaret I. McQuilling Had Seen Pasadena Grow From Indiana Colony to City of Sixty Thousand; Survived by Husband - Mrs. Margaret I. McQuilling, a resident of Pasadena for nearly a half century, died today at her residence, 253 Palmetto Drive, age 79 years. Mrs. McQuilling is the second pioneer woman of Pasadena to answer the last summons within the past month, Mrs. Mary Hartwell having died recently. Mrs. McQuilling was the wife of A.K. McQuilling, a well known and honored Pasadena resident, and is survived by her daughter, Miss Inez McQuilling, and two grandchildren, and also a brother, Daniel W. Sedwick, who resides in Illinois. Mrs. McQuilling's maiden name was Margaret Isabel [S]edwick. She was born in Pennsylvania in 1843. In 1874 Mr. and Mrs. McQuilling arrived in Pasadena to make their home. She was privileged to see the little Indiana colony grow into a city of 60,000 inhabitants in less than fifty years. Of a quiet and retiring nature, Mrs. McQuilling did not take an active part in the social and club life of the city. She was greatly interested in church work and had the honor of being an active member of the Neighborhood Church since its organization. She was also a member of the Women's Relief Corps and had taken an active part in the work of that organization of patriotic women. Mrs. McQuilling was also a member of the Pasadena Pioneer Society. Mr. and Mrs. McQuilling arrive in Pasadena forty-eight years ago this month. Mr. McQuilling for many years was actively identified with the Pasadena Land and Water Company and had much to do in solving the water problems of Pasadena. Their home place originally consisted of ten acres at Colorado street and Pasadena avenue, now in the heart of the business section of the city. The lumber for their home was hauled from Los Angeles. Mrs. McQuilling personally superintending the work. Mrs. McQuilling was well known in Pasadena, particularly among the old-time residents and those residing on the Westside. The announcement of her death was heard with sorrow by her friends. Funeral arrangements have not been completed, but will be announced later by Ives & Warren." Pasadena Star News, 12 Jul 1922.
