Mr. and Mrs Kies were honored
On Thursday last week the women's club of the German St. Paul's church gathered in the rooms of the Sunday School building for a nice celebration. Mrs. Catharina Kies, president of this club for many years, was given a golden brooch as a present by the members. 28 years had passed since on a Sunday afternoon - 17 January 1886 - the late pastor, Dr. Merschroth, together with 20 women founded a women's club. Managed by hard-working officials this club has achieved great things for our church. If it was not for this club, pastor and community would hardly have been able to make of St. Paul's church what it is today: namely an independent Lutheran church, which considers it its duty to stay German until its last breath. German faithfulness (loyalty) reigned in its center, for from the first day on, this club has seen only one president and that was: Mrs. Catharina Kies. Faithfully at her side, always thinking of the good of the church and of the club was the happy clover:

Aware of the importance of the day, the presbyterial board of this community did not forget to present an unexpected joy to Mr. Philipp Kies. The president, the chairmen, the church eldest, the confidential officers and trustees of the church came at the same hour in order to fill the number. Mr. Kies was one of the founding fathers of our church and has served it faithfully for 30 years - for a certain time as 1st president; during the last 17 years as its chairman. As a sign of thanks and to honor his faithful service he was presented an umbrella with the engraved numbers of the years 1884 - 1914 and the monogram P.K. - Philipp Kies.
Pastor Ellermann opened the meeting and delivered the celebration speech supporting the conservative-German attitude. The musical entertainment was presented by the organist, Mrs. Dr. Van Lengen. The newly elected president, Mrs. Carolina Derschang, then proceeded to present the golden brooch in the name of the women's club and of the church, and the president of the church, Mr. John M. Luther, handed over to our honored guest the nice gift in the name of the community and presbyterial board. The Sunday School house was festively decorated with colorful flowers. A banquet was then served by the ladies of the women's club in honor of Mr. Philipp Kies and his wife, Catharina Kies. We wish the happy couple many years of joyful work with the Evangelic Lutheran St.Paul's church.
