May 7, 1908
The death of Mrs. Ella B. Deegan, shortly after 5 o’clock Monday morning, May 4, at her home in Julia Street, Dushore, while not entirely unexpected, came, nevertheless, as a heavy blow to the surviving members of the family and a wide circle of friends.
Just six weeks and one day previous to Mrs. Deegan’s death, her beloved husband answered the last roll call.
She had been ill since last March with sciatic rheumatism, which caused her death. The funeral services were held in St. Basil’s church this (Wednesday) morning at ten o’clock, with interment in St. Basil’s cemetery. The services and burial were attended by a large concourse of friends and relatives.
Mrs. Deegan was born in Monroeton March 19, 1843, and at the time of her death was 65 years, one month and 14 days of age. Her maiden name was Ella B. Smith, she being a daughter of the late Jonas P. Smith. She was a lady of sterling Christian character, being a member of the Catholic Church and her departure from this world will be greatly missed.
She is survived by the following children: George T. Deegan, Mrs. J.P. Carmody, and Mrs. H. E. Arnold, of this place; Mrs. H. Castle and Mrs. E.L. Solomon of Wilkes-Barre. One son, Leonard J. Deegan, died in the services of his country at the time of the Spanish American war, and another Eugene Deegan, was killed in an accident on the Lehigh Valley railroad. Deceased is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Jesse Schoonover of Towanda.
