Morris Ray Cavanaugh died March 5, 2001 at Hendrick Medical Center after a 6 month courageous battle with cancer. Services for Morris were held March 7, 2001 at Higginbotham Funeral Chapel in Cross Plains with burial in Burkett Cemetery, Burkett, Coleman County, Texas. Long-time friend, Joe Coppinger, pastor of Cottonwood Baptist Church officiated.
Morris was born August 24, 1934 in Santa Anna, Texas to Alvie Raymond and Altha Jane (Bond) Cavanaugh. He was the grandson of Callahan County pioneers Jackson Lee and Mary Ann (Hicks) Cavanaugh and Holland Hiram and Mary Elizabeth (Baum) Bond. He lived all of his life in Callahan County near the Dressy Community with the exception of the time he served in the Army and college days at Tarleton University in Stephenville. Morris was a stock farmer and worked in the "oil patch" as a driller. His favorite pastime was genealogy and researching his family tree. A fairly new Christian with a great tetimony, Morris was a member of Cottonwood Baptist Church. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend.
Morris married Bettie Sue Burkett Yates on June 20, 1973 in Abilene, Texas and with that marriage came two children, who became as his own, Kimbery Anne Yates and Jerry Lynn Yates. Morris and Bettie had one daughther, Elizabeth Jane. They resided in Callahan County.
Morris is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, a special aunt, Vesta Bond, a son Jerry Lynn Yates and great-grandaughter, Christa Nicole Yates.
His wife, Bettie, of Cross Plains, his daughters and their husbands Elizabeth Jane and David Lee Weide of Abilene and Kimberly Anne and Raymond Lynn Tatom of Clyde survive Morris. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Megan Elizabeth Weide and Sarah Nicole Weide of Abilene, Jacob Alan Tatom of San Angelo and Angela Michelle Tatom of Clyde, Christopher Nolan and Misty Yates and their children Cory Nolan and Shana Brooke Yates of Abilene, Jeffrey Lynn and Patty Yates and daughter Kaylee Michelle Yates of Abilene and Lauren Michelle Yates of Michigan.
Paulbearers were Dwayne Wilson, Benny Free, Allen Phillips, N. L. Dillard, Donnie Dillard and James Reynolds. Honorary pallbearer was Nathan Foster with whom Morris worked in the oil patch for many years.
