Surnames: Carter, Whitaker, Clark, Jarvis, Broadaway
Anyone searching these names in the Delaware/Maryland area that might know more than I do? Here is what I know:
John H. Carter in Indiana in 1850 Census with wife Rachel, kids Susan, John H. Jr, Mary E (or B), James W, Charles E, and Rachel E. Mother Rachel may have been a Jarvis. Family moved to Wapello Co Iowa and I have good info from then (1852) on. I am only interested in documented sources, and problems are: 1) that there were Carters in Delaware since at least 1683; 2) people in Delaware and Maryland in 1700s and 1800s were notorious for moving back and forth across the border. I have a 14Sept1830 marriage bond for John Carter and Rachel Jarvis in Kent Co. DE, but this is not definitive proof.
An unvalidated bit of info on LDS Family Search site says That John H(enry)'s father was John W. Carter. Henry Whitaker (of Kent Co, DE) leaves money to his grandchildren including "John Whitaker Carter", "Edward Broadaway Carter", and "William Carter". Edward Carter (also of Kent Co, DE) had earlier left money to his children with the same names. There are additional same names in both wills, but I am only listing the males. A valid but not proven assumption would be: Edward Carter married Mary Whitaker and they had a bunch of children who were alive in the 1780s and 90s when these two wills were written. Then, John Whitaker Carter married Ann Clark and one of their children was John Henry Carter born ca 1804-06.
Has anyone else come across these names that can help either prove or disprove these theories?
Thanks in advance.
Nick
