I live in upstate SC, but am originally from Macon, GA.
John Henry Abel was born in Macon, Bibb Co, Georgia on 15 Nov 1846. He died in 1891 in Macon and I believe is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery. His father is buried in that cemetery, so I assume he is too.
The next time we go down to Macon to visit my DH's mother, I will check with the caretaker at the cemetery to see if he's actually buried there.
Henry Abel (Milo's father) lived and died in Macon, GA.
In some research online this morning after I received your email, I found Henry's funeral announcement in the Macon Telegraph archives. He arrived in NY from Germany 20 May 1834 and arrived in Macon, GA 18 Oct 1838 and never left.
Do you have death dates on any of the brothers and sisters?
I only have John Henry's date.
Where do you live?
Melody

Having thought about it again..

We know when & Where Sarah Hannah Abel was born
"richcroker" knows his relatives marriage & death dates & locations - key being that she was married to Shore in 1914.

If she was married in 1914 she wont appear on any published census record under her married name.

But you wrote "I dont believe that sarah shore, married name, was sarah hannah abel, birth dates/places are not similar on census"

Which census & details are you comparing?

The last published one was 1901 and there she appears with her mother Julia and the details do very much match what richcroker knows about his ancestor.

In one of the other postings in the thread I already corrected myself and acknowledged Moses did have a daughter Sarah.

We will have to wait and see what the birth certificate says re Sarahs parentage - Ive been researching Moses and the rest of my family for nearly 30 years and things are frequently not what they seem despite the paperwork, especially where Moses is concerned!

Ok, Id be interested to see how that works out.

No problem, will let you know anything I can. Sadly at this stage I dont see anyway of tracing things back beyond Isaac. The problem is that the location of their country of origin is so general it could be anywhere - Western Russia could be Poland, Latvia, Lithunia, Russia etc etc.

One of Moses grandsons is a "well written" anthropologist who specialises in the Jewish people - even he is unsure of the origins.

The other issue is the way names have been anglicised - Moses was the original name however he anglicised his name and his children over the years to counter antisemetic problems. Thus you will find him listed and refered to as Moses, Maurice or Morris ( the latter being common anglicised varations of Moses ).

Some of his children went all the way - changing their first names AND surname ( they became "Bell" ).

Seems my grandfather was one of the exceptions and Ive held onto the Abel surname.

Let me know how you get on but it does now sound like its the same moses.

Ah, right - that makes some more sense.

My line is via Moses and his second wife Sabrina Ullman.

His first wife, Julie Hart, is obviously your line. There is another descendent of Mose/Julie researching that area. She has made some postings on here - I do have her details somewhere if you cant locate her, her surname is Allen I think.

Suffice to say I have a number of documents & certificates about Moses. Moses was the son of George Abel ( born 1825 Western Russia - George was also a dentist ) and Ann Jones ( Born 1832, D 1869 ). George had a brother Dan ( also Born W Russia ) and their father was Isaac Abel.

Moses had two siblings - Amelia & Paulene. I believe these two may have gone to the US - as I believe did at least one of Moses children from his first marriage.

George remarried Mala after Ann died ( I havent researched Mala as yet ). I Have copies of City directories for Manchester listing George as a dentist and then Mala after his death as a Milner. I have copies of George/Ann marriage certificate - which is a story in its own right.

Moses died in Nottingham ( I presume you are in the UK? ) 18 Jan 1940 and is buried in one of the old Jewish cemetaries in Nottingham ( sadly without a headstone ).

Moses dental training is interesting - apparently prior to 1922 there was no formal registration of Dentists. According to the authorities he was registered when the law came into effect but he was allowed to practice on the basis that he had been practicing for many years despite having no formal training.

I do have some scanned photo's of the man - quite a character by all accounts according to my relatives that remember him.

There is more but I hope thats of some interest.

Gareth.

Thanks Gareth

You are right - we need to wait for the marriage certificate to come to confirm ages, parents, and witnesses etc.

However, what I have found so far is this:

Using FreeBMD a Sarah Hannah Abel was born in Newport, Mons, in the final quarter of 1889. No other Sarah Abel is registered as being born within a year of this, and certainly not in Newport. Sarah Annie Shore's death record:

http://content.ancestry.co.uk/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=8966&amp...
has a birth date of November 5th 1889. Therefore this would fit.

Sarah A Abel married Joseph Shore in Q2 1914, in Newport, Mons.

Sarah A Shore died in Gloucester in Q2 1972, but was buried in Newport (confirmed by my father and aunt).

There was a Sarah Abel listed (with Moses and Julia as parents) at that age in both the 1891 and 1901 censuses.

I would suggest that there is not a huge likelihood that there would be two Sarah Abels born in the same year in Newport - certainly BMD data doesn't record it. The only question mark is the middle name: Hannah vs Annie. However they are related names. This is why I have ordered the marriage certificate. Saying that, Sarah Abel's daughter (my grandmother) was variously known as Annie Isobel Shore or Nancy Shore - it wasn't until she died that we knew what it really was!

I'll post more when I have the marriage certificate - this might also throw some light on the 33 Orchard Street question!

Regards

Richard

The likelihood of there being another

Hi Gareth

Thanks for this - it is both very helpful and really interesting! I was starting to think my entire family were agricultural labourers!

I have just ordered a marriage certificate for Sarah Abel, to check that Moses was her father. When I get it and it confirms this line, I'll let you know.

If this is the case, I would be really grateful if you could let me have more information.

Thanks once again

PS - I am in the UK!

Yes - but as Gareth said, she wouldn't have been Sarah Shore until 1914 when she married Joseph Shore - she would have still been Sarah Albel. Also the Newport referred to in the 1911 census is in Shopshire, England, near Telford, not Newport, Wales. The Monmouthshire records are not yet available on the 1911 census:
http://www.1911census.co.uk/content/default.aspx?r=24&10...

The marriage certificate should be here in a few days!

I THINK I CAN HELP! (At least point ya in the right direction!!!) It's been many years since you've posted this on this ancestry.com board, so I hope you will still get this. Hopefully your search has been successful in the intervening yrs, but if not you may find this useful:

My grandfather was Sidney Wiley Abel II of Macon, Bibb Co., GA. His father was S.W. Abel Sr. (naturally) - I noticed you weren't 100% sure of the name "Cecil", but possibly phonetic similarity to "Sidney"? My grandfather's mother's name WAS Ethel - so it seems to be a strong connection for whom you're searching. Interestingly, my grandmother affectionately called my granddad "Pat"! She was the only one I ever heard call him that as well; vaguely recall he said it was an old nickname from his Army days when I asked him why she called him Pat, instead of Sid or Sidney. I believe the only sibling to my granddad and your father [note: I never heard him refer to any of his brothers as Cliff/ord, though I believe I did hear "James" when he spoke of his siblings.] still living is Annie, who is living in Rome, GA (married name of Shannon, husband Virgil). Annie is the sweetest lady & she's kept a detailed family history that would likely help point you in the right direction! All my findings of the S.W. & Ethel Abel family of Macon, GA has shown them to be community pillars, generously kind and highly respected. If you get this message and believe this is the family for whom you are searching to find your half bro/sis, send a message back to me and I'll get Annie Abel Shannon's contact information for you. I'd love to help if you haven't had a fruitful search! And, of course, it's a pleasure to meet another member along the family line!!! [2nd/3rd cousin I believe?]

Look forward to hearing from you if you still need this!

C. Abel

Re: Searching for Abel's

Hello! Not sure if you're still reading this thread. My Grandfather was Carl Abel and was from Middle Lake, Sask. His family did come over from Germany at some point. He had at least two brothers that I can remember, Otto and Gus. One was his twin brother. I would be interested in finding out any information that you know about the Abel's from Middle Lake.

Thanx!

My name is Peter von dem Hagen and Charlotte Abel was my grandmother so Adolph Abel would be my great-great grandfather. I know from family history he only had daughters and that he had some type of grand estate. I'd love to know more about it if possible. Please contact me if possible.

peter
