Hi,
I am looking for ANY information regarding the ABER(S) surname and the family around HUMPHREY,NY or in PA.
My grandfather was John Garritt ABERS who was born around 1889 and married Nellie Althea CARLEY.
I am confused about the surname. I cannot find any listing for ABERS though that is how my mothers maiden name is spelled on legal documents, but lots of the ABER surname. Is this the same family? They seem to both hail from the same areas. ANY help would be valuable.
Thank you so much

Abers - 1860 - Penn Twp, Allegheny Co, PA

All,

I have just found a confusing set of four Abers listed in the 1860 Census and would appreciate any enlightenment others can offer as to their ancestry. Here is the census data:

Location: White Ash P.O., Penn Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania
Page: 33/586
Name: John Aber
Age: 41(?) (somewhat illegible)
Occupation: Farmer
Real Estate / Personal Estate: $2,000/$400
Place of Birth: Pennsylvania

Household Members:
Rachel 39 PA
Catherine 31 PA
William 18 PA

This group does not look like a husband/wife/daughter/son set, but instead like a husband/wife/sister/son or even four siblings.

They are the household listed immediately after the household of James and Margaret (Simon) Aber, James being the son of John and Rachel (Beatty) Aber, so I started to look at the sibling angle. With a little work, I can make them to be at least three of that James' siblings, but there are some problems:

- James' brother John would be 36 (not too bad a match on age), but I have him dead in 1856.

- James' sister Catherine is a better fit (31 when I would have her being approximately 34 in 1860) and

she didn't marry until 1870.

- James' brother William, again not a bad fit, according to my data, he would have been 19 at this point

in 1860, and he didn't marry until 1877.

- I have no sister of James named Rachel, but this might be assumed, based on his mother's name being Rachel. Or, this Rachel could be the wife of the aforementioned John, making for another error I have in John's record, as I have him dying without having been married.

Can someone enlighten me on these four Abers?

Floyd
They lived in Ohio until their deaths - Bartley died in 1976; Iona died in 1982.

I'm specifically trying to find where Iona is buried and when and where she and Bartley were married. Her SSN was issued from Michigan. I'm also trying to find her parental information, as that might help me find the rest of the info.

Thanks!

I am just beginning to research the ABER line in my family tree. Is there anyplace I can find general information regarding the history of the family? Are all/most ABER/ABERS in NY/PA descended from Israel ABER?

I am clueless. It just seems like the ABER part of the family is shrouded in mystery.
My grandfather was JOHN GARRITT <sp?> ABER or ABERS. I have seen it spelled both ways. He was born in HUMPHREY, NY in 1888 or 89. His father MAY be BENJAMIN.

If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be so grateful. If any relatives read this I do have a picture of him taken in 1914 that I could share (weeding picture....he married Nellie Althea CARLEY who was born in Poland, NY)

He married Agusta Johnson or Johnston(sp?) who was born in Sweden. They had 4 children, John, Ida, Annie, and Clarence. Clarence was my grandfather. Clarence married Edith Powell, and they had one son, Clarence "Barton" Aber, who was my father. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Was surprised to find this active list. I posted a message on the Aber surname forum on that other site:
Double-you double-you double-you dot gen forum (one word) dot com. And I believe the G in gen and the F in forum are capitalized. Am spelling it out this way because I have a notion some messages are deleted which contain e-mail addresses or URLs.
Anyway, have a look.
