Robert Abercrombie (1715-1779)

About two months ago I was just looking on the message boards for things that might involve my Abercrombie ancestors when I came across the following article below:

http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.abercrombie/383.1/mb.ash...

It's called the Robert Abercrombie Myth and I have no idea what to think.
I'm a beginner in doing my family genealogy, but I should have been smarter and not copied names and dates. Last year however when I was doing my Abercrombie line I assumed I was on the right track, got excited and went with it.

Anyway I took my Robert Abercrombie to be the son of James Abercromby, a baronet in Scotland.
When I found that thread though I double checked on Burkes Peerage website and it wasn't the same Robert.

I want to know if anyone else has had this issue perhaps?
I also wanted to ask how I could find my Robert Abercrombies real parents?
I want to know where I come from.

If anyone could help me in anyway I would greatly appreciate it.

Regards,
Laura Williams

I know this thread is kind of old, but I had to ask because I am a descendant of this Robert Abercrombie.

Do you have any idea who his real parents might be if it's not the baronet?

Regards,
Laura Williams

Don't know where Charles Franklin Abercrombie was during the 1880 census. Perhaps he was living with relatives or just was not counted?
I do also show his date of birth as 28 July 1875.
Also do now show that James B. Abercrombie was 2nd married 15 July 1869 in Tallapoosa Co., AL.
Therefore, yes, Charles Franklin Abercrombie, was a son of James B. Abercrombie and 2nd wife, Martha J. Swigler. Think her maiden name may have been Herrin.
Hello,

Thank you for the information on the Abercrombies. I have been working on this for several years now and every day I receive another small piece that it making my family tapestry complete. Also, thank you for the information on Della (I had not been able to locate her maiden name). Charles Franklin creates some other mysteries: Based on his WWI Draft Registration card he was born July 28, 1874. According to Tallapoosa County, AL marriage records James Abercrombie marries his second wife, Martha J. Swingler (or Singler, born May 1836) on July 15, 1869. Charles Franklin would then be the son of James and Martha (not Sarah Thompson). The odd thing is that in the 1880 census James and Martha are listed with no children - where was 6 year old Charles?. In the 1900 and 1910 census Martha is living with her son Charles Franklin Abercrombie in Chambers County, AL.

I've seen it reported that James Madison "Polk" Abercrombie is buried in an unmarked grave in the Lebanon Cemetery at or near Hamilton, Marion County, Alabama.
Also have seen it reported that he, James Madison "Polk" Abercrpmbie, died from being shot by his brother-in-law.

I've been researching Abercrombie family history for about forever and show that James Madison "Polk" Abercrombie was a son of James B. Abercrombie (c.1807/8 - abt. 1880) and 1st wife, Sarah Thompson (c.1810-1865).
James B. Abercrombie appears to have been born in Laurens County, South Carolina and died in Chambers County, Alabama.
He is reported to be buried in an unmarked grave in the Paul P. Sims Family Cemetery located in northern Chambers County, Alabama.
Paul P. Sims, was a son of my ggg grandparents, Hiram Sims and wife, Mary Abercrombie.
She, Mary Abercrombie, is one of the proven daughters of Colvill Abercrombie and wife, Mary Lindley.

Charles Franklin Abercrombie (1874-1937) was one of the sons of Jmes B. Abercrombie and 1st wife, Sarah A. Thompson.
He, Charles Franklin Abercrombie, was 1st married to Della Mooney on 26 November 1895 in Chambers County, Alabama.
She, Della Mooney, was one of the daughters of Lewis B. Mooney (1844-?) and wife, Sarah Sims (1844-c.1944).
She, Sarah Sims was one of the daughters of Paul P. Sims (1822-1899) and 1st wife, Frances Causey (c.1826-1872).
There is a Mooney & Willoughby family members plot for about six or eight graves in the Paul P. Sims Family Cemetery. Makes me suspect that James B. Abercrombie and Della (Mooney) Abercrombie are both buried in two of the unmarked graves in the Mooney & Willoughby plot.

By the way, I'm told that Charles Franklin Abercrombie was known to refer to the Sims as his cousins. I really believe that Charles was correct with the reference to being cousins. Unfortunately, for my about forever searching I'm still unable to prove the parents of my gggg grandfather, Colvill Abercrombie.

Samuel Abercrombie Born (1862) father and mother was william Abercrombie(1830) and eliza (1835). samuel also had 3 brothers and 4 sisters all born and lived in marylebone. Their grandfather was Thomas(1801) and Ann(1797) Abercrombie it is possible if samuel was born earlier than your samuel he could be your samuels father. The family often names the first born with the same name. There have been four generations with the first born called william. The family have been in marylebone since the 1800's. Hope this helps.

He has done extensive research for a book. ANash1@nc.rr.com He goes to extents for verification, if anyone has the correct info it will be Alfred.
I did come across something in my notes that said Ann Kellett was Colville's mother, I want to say a census, but I do not have it at my fingertips. He married Sarah after Ann died so the first batch of children were theirs.
Thanks for replying
Lynne

Seeking the family of Elizabeth Abercomebie who married George Wilson Yother 10 Nov 1832 in Hall Co, GA. I have a typed list that could have been from Bible pages that shows the following:

James Abercrombie, b. Feb 17, 1790; died Sept 27, 1839
Mary Abercrombie, b. Nov 10, 1795; died Sep 15, 1839
Wilson Abercombie, b. Mar 10, 1813
Nancy Abercrombie, b. May 15, 1815
Elizabeth Abercrombie, b. April 14, 1817
James Crom Abercrombie, Sep 26, 1819
Mary Abercrombie, B. Oct. 10, 1821
John Hamilton Abercrombie, b. Dec 20, 1823
Sarah Anne Abercrombie, b. June 22, 1826
Jane Abercrombie, B. Aug 11, 1828
Mahala Abercrombie, b. June 9, 1829.
No source given, but the type appears to be an old typewriter and the title is "Abercrombie Record."

There is conflicting information on Internet family trees about various members of this family.

Elizabeth Abercrombie Yother died 24 Dec 1880 in TN (not sure where she was born, perhaps GA or NC); and Geoge Wilson Yother, b. 9 July 1809 (perhaps son of Adam Yother or Yoder and Nancy Davis) and supposedly died 6 May 1865, probably in TN.

Samuel LeFayette Yother, b. 7 May 1856 in TN was son of George Wilson Yother and Elizabeth Abercrombie Yother. He married Almeda Rogers (b. Mar 1851 in GA and daughter of Ambrose K. Rogers and Sarah Reed) 28 Aug 1875 in TN.

Anyone know any more about the siblings and parents of Elizabeth Abercrombie?

Hey Lynne713,

I don't have anything on hand at the moment that I would call proof. There are a lot of conflicting documents on the Abercrombie family now. A lot of posts have been made that are not accurate so do not etch the reply in stone.

A recent post I found from www.ldpierce.com stated that Colville's birth parents are John Joseph Abercrombie and Ann Kellett Abercrombie. According to the document John Joseph Abercrombie married his second wife Sarah Mitchell Abercrombie.

You might consider comparing Karen Robert's records on the Abercrombie family also. She has a lot of information on them.

I know exactly what you mean about professional researchers,
they look at what is in front of them and don't always go in depth even though you are paying these people. I too have a look at it with my own eyes philosophy and then I question it a little further.
Not finding headstones, that could be simply that 1. they didn't have one, 2. it may have sank if it was just a marker of some kind.
You may never know where they are buried unless you can get your hands on a Family Bible and good luck with that.
Re: Descendants of Sir Alexander Abercrombie and Elizabeth Baird

Hello fellow Abercrombie Researchers,
Let me weigh in on your topic. One of you stated quite strongly that the Abercrombies of America did not come from Scotland. Initally that's basically correct, they came from Ireland after they had already settled there from Scotland.
As far as anyone knows Sir Alexander has no ties directly to the American lines. BEFORE any of you jump on me, my source is: Abercrombie Family Association, 305 8th Street S., Cordele, GA 31015. You can obtain free information from them, where they DO have documented proof, with a SASE (self addressed stamped envelope). However your inquiry has to be specific pertaining to the information you are seeking. they have over 16,200 entries into their data base and have done extensive searches throughout England, Ireland and Scotland. IF anyone has the answer to that million dollar question it would be them.
Keep in mind any information you find on Ancestry, or any other Genealogy data bank is mainly put here by other researchers like yourself and unless they provide a documented proof or a reference number of proof, it may not be the actual fact.
Hope this helps just a little.
Lynne
one of the million Abercrombie decendants.

I think Rebecca "Elsey" and Martha were the ones who were spinsters (for want of a better term) and stayed with the family.

They were both listed in the 1870 census with their elderly parents.

The Kellett Babb will is very sloppy, and the LDS Library copy is not very good. I can't tell if there is an Amanda. Arrinda Sims is clearly listed. The bane of my existence for a long time was that several researchers said that Arrinda (Arenda or Arinda spellings as well) did not exist and that only a daughter named Amanda did. Someone even said that the will listed an Amanda Babb, when the very sloppy Arrinda is actually followed by the name Sims.

I learned not to trust what experts deciphered years ago and was advised to look at the will with my own eyes. That was the best advice I ever took. Arrinda's name was probably spelled in many different ways because she was illiterate, and her husband was listed as having been blind in the 1870 census until his death. I guess the census taker had to figure out the best spelling under the circumstances.

I find it very odd that Kellett and Rebecca do not seem to have marked graves in the Babb-Abercrombie-Conkle Cemetery, even though many people who died near the time they did have tombstones. I wish that with the clear Babb influence in the area, someone knew the location of the graves.

Inez,
Hey its been a long time since we've corresponded on Colville. I was looking for something in my research for someone else and came across this.
John Abercrombie, Born 1742 Scotland died 11/29/1819 in Laurens County, SC at 79.
In 1764 when John was 22 he married Ann Kellett, born ca. 1742 in Laurens County, SC.
they had the following children:
Colville, William and James.
I recieved this information from
Abercrombie Family Association
305 8th Street S.
Cordele, GA 32015
They will send you any information that they have on the Abercrombie Family, they have done extensive research all the way back to where the Abercrombies migrated from Scotland to Ireland to the United States.
To get this information, send them a letter, with specific data you are looking for, enclose a self addressed stamped envelope, that is all they charge your envelope.
IF you send them information on your Abercrombie line you instantly become a member of this association for life.
Hope this is useful.
Lynne

In my research I have found that date also, its supposed to be the date Rebecca Abercrombie Babb died in Henry County, Georgia. I have her marrying Kellett in 1811 in Laurens County, SC.
Now the names Amanda and Rebecca are two of their daughters, could possibly be one of them lived with Kellett and the age was put down wrong. Contact Charles Nash, he is one of our major researchers in this family, Charles.Nash@delta.com, he has access to the Babb Cemetery and can or possibly already has dates from headstones, so if there is a wrong date out in this vast internet system, he can most likely clear it up. He is currently putting a book together so he makes sure all facts are correct.
Hope this helps.
Lynne

Rebecca Abercrombie, wife of Kellett Babb/Henry County GA

I have done extensive research on this family, and became a DAR member via Joseph Kellett of South Carolina. The Kelletts were mingled with the Babbs and Abercrombies during the 1700s and early 1800s in Laurens County, South Carolina and into Henry County, Georgia.

It took me forever, but a while back, I discovered Rebecca and Kellett Babb (my g-g-g-g-grandparents) listed in the 1870 U.S. census for Henry County, GA. They were both listed as being 79 years of age, and born in South Carolina. The problem with finding them was that the names were reversed, so you had to search for "Babb Kellett" to find the entry. I added the notation so others could find this.

That being said, where is this August 14, 1856 death date for Rebecca Abercrombie Babb coming from? I have seen it all over the place. She was clearly alive at the time of the 1870 census.

I learned from my DAR research process that I could take nothing for granted. I almost gave up when numerous sources said that Kellett Babb's will mentioned an Amanda Babb. I got an actual copy of the will, and it said Arrinda Sims. The Amanda usually comes from an interpretation of Arrinda or Arenda in various records with very, very poor handwriting.

I always like to follow up on information that does not coincide with mine.

Letter from ERNESTINE (ABERCROMBIE) PEARSON FIELD to her sister-in-law MARY ENGLE (PATTERSON) wife of GEN. J.J. ABERCROMBIE

GEN. JOHN JOSEPH ABERCROMBIE collection of letters from DUKE University

239-241 (to MARY ENGLE (PATTERSON) ABERCROMBIE, her sister in law, from:ERNESTINE (ABERCROMBIE) PEARSON FIELD)

Oct 13th (no year) (perhaps 1863?)

Well, my dear sis,

Long look'd for has come at last. I am in your debt. I
own, but have written two letters to your other half, so I do not think I am as culpable, as I thought I was, your last was 3rd Aug and since that I have written twice, to my brother and once to yourself, in my last to your husband I mentioned my reasons for not sending the DE NORMANDIE Will: since which I have been trying to get some important papers in the form of letters from ANNA MAGDALINE DE NORMANDIE, one from J. A. DE NORMANDIE, after his arrival in Geneva, Augst 1851. To COUSIN CHARLES BILES Two more from East Liverpool Columbia Co Ohio. There is a great deal of information in his letters, but from the way he speaks of his father, I have little doubt he has acted the same part my grandfather's brother JOHN A. DE NORMANDIE acted by my grandfather ANTONY DE NORMANDIE. He accuses my COUSIN JOHN (his father) of stealing the power of attorney, from him his father (DOCT. JOHN DE NORMANDIE)has a better right of course to my UNCLE JAMES property than the son has Now dear sister like my other cousins, I think there is something wrong.
Why if he accepted twenty five hundred made up among the BILES family to get as he told them Their, part in the estate? Why did he not write to my brother announcing the same proposition. What right had he to his grandfather's estate. This J. A. DE NORMANDIE who writes these letters is my uncle's sons, son grandson to my mother's brother, JAMES JAQUES was the God Father of UNCLE JAMES my mother's only brother; it seems the Will does not extend to the females except the testators own two sisters. You will see in the translated Will I wish to send you, and which I want you to have compared with the one you have, and with the one I have here which I have not translated, some French person in Washington may translate it more faithfully than an interested party. JAMES mentions in one of his letters from the city of Geneva 1851 he says - There are 2 certificates of perpetual rent on the Hotel De Ville or Government House in Paris No. 10542 and 28572 - both estimated in principle at L3655.
13. The other words, I cannot make out. He says JOHN ABRAHAM (my grandfather's brother) after the death of ANNA MAGADELENE drew (or accumulated)he writes, rents for 2/1/2 years besides ?9658.13.3 argent (another French word I cannot make it out) on the estate of JAMES DE NORMANDIE my mother's brother Godson, to the Testator, he says "how there has been no settlement of "these rents since 1782 - unless the heirs of JOHN ABRAHAM DE NORMANDIE "are drawing them of which it is very probable. but my dear sister if you think one of the letters in an envelope would reach you in safety if you write immediately I will send one and you may find them very important, my brother must (I?) think have his part at least of the part in Parise. I have borrowed them, letters, Will, and translated Will for a month or so from ANTHONY D. BILES on purpose for your inspection in this time you can coppy such parts as you think necessary for your purpose, and send them safely, back to me, to return to him. But how shall I send them? one at a time by mail, will be very tedious, cannot you appoint a place where I could take them, until you can send for them. you know I would not like a stranger who knew my sis and brother to come to this "house." Now my dear I hope you will not blame, or scold, at my long silence - We are getting uneasy about CHARLES he is in Comp E 33rd Regt NJ Vol. He is so punctual writing always once a week. Can you tell us anything about the 33rd he is first Lieutenant LIZZIE (her dau-in-law ELIZABETH PAUL (BEAGARY) FIELD) had one letter since he left in Sept - I have had one from THEODORE (her son CAPT. THEODORE FRANCIS FIELD) from Culpepper two or three weeks ago. You never mention ERNESTINE or JOE in your last, what has become of them. After we have concluded our business with the DE NORMANDIES you must give me an account of every individual, you know how it pleases me to hear from them all. I cannot fill my sheet dear sister my poor old head is so much bewildered in writing, and coppying from the letters, that I feel it aching, and must close, besides I must visit a sick person - a short adieu, my love to all my children as well as to their dear father, and a good scold for his not writing. Believe me dear sister, the same true and affectionate sister as ever notwithstanding, a little apparent neglect may sometimes appear in your ever affectionate
ERNESTINE A. F.

I wish you would write your address more plain. I can make out 21st but nothing more, so must put it to JOHN's care.
Althera Abercrombie and Francis Marion Hillhouse

I am still puzzled by Althera Abercrombie Hillhouse's parentage. I am well able to read the census records, but not to good at library research, and digging thru newspapers, and probate land and will records. A trip to a research center or library may be in order for me to find out more about her life. I'm curious as to the Hillhouse claim of Greenwood LeFlore being a possible candidate for her father, but I have found no proof of this so far. I would like to have a death certificate, or family record of her birth, or copy of her marriage license to establish some proof of paternity. There is a disagreement over the maiden name of Althera. Another source claims her name to have been Althera Greenwood LeFlore, daughter of Green LeFlore, last chief of the Choctaws. No basis for this claim can be found. Ervin Hillhouse found an Indian heritage claim among the Hillhouses, including his own father, but he has not been able to prove it one way or another. Further research is needed at this point.

In the 1860 Census, she is 18 years of age, and married to F(rancis) M(arion) Hillhouse (age 22; a farmer). They list one daughter Martha E(llen), age 1. They are listed in Township 21, Choctaw, Mississippi. Althera's birthplace is listed as Mississippi.

In the 1870 Census, Altherah age is shown as 28. Francis M Hillhouse, spouse, 31; and children: Martha E Hillhouse, 11, Effie Hillhouse, 4, and Jesse K Hillhouse, 1, are listed. Althera's birthplace is listed as Mississippi.

In the 18880 Census, Althera, 37, lists her occupation as working on the farm. The census says her mother and father were born in Alabama. Her spouse, Frances M Hillhouse, 41, as well as children: Effa (Effie) A Hillhouse, 14; Jessie S Hillhouse, 12; Ida Hillhouse, 8, Ada Hillhouse, 6; Estell H Hillhouse, 3; and Willis Hillhouse; 3 months. Their oldest daughter, Martha Ellen Hillhouse is not listed in this household at this time, but her own household, having married Thomas Boswell Williams on 10 Feb 1879.

If anyone has additional info on Althera Abercrombie, I would greatly appreciate it. I've hit a brick wall on this one.

Many thanks,
Heather R Satchel

Unfortunately, there are major flaws in this work. To post everything from this work may be a mistake "before" verification on the major lines are fully reviewed for basic accuracy (especially the myth that the Laurens District, South Carolina Abercrombies relate to royalty). The John Joseph Abercrombie line is an exception...he being a French speaking musician/music teacher that arrived in America (South Carolina coast) as an adult. Once posted many will regard such genealogy as accurate due simply because it was an genealogy prepared almost 100 years previous.

Hi There.

I really interested in the information you have. I am an Abercrombie (married name Hambling) my family are from London. My Great Grandfather (Henry Abercrombie) was born in 1900 in Chelsea, London and his father was Samuel Abercrombie born in Marylebone, London. I know we have William as Great Uncle. My family move to Gloucestershire in the 1950's and we still live in this area. Hope you can help. Cheers Melissa

This posting is "factually inaccurate" and should NOT be given consideration in that: (1)said Katherine Thomson was NOT the mother of said Colville Abercrombie and (2) the information attributed to said James A. Abercrombie relates to at "least" two different individuals and lacks factual documentation. Tony Schoonover

You stated in your February 2, 2009 post that you were a Colville Abercrombie descendant...fine with me! But, your July 7, 2009 post regarding James Abercrombie's lineage is totally bogus! Maybe you should hire a professional genealogist to help you in your research and future Abercrombie posts? No hard feelings...goodbye to you, too!

In reference to my previous reply concerning the parents of Colville Abercrombie, DO NOT ETCH THE INFORMATION IN STONE. The previous data was pulled from an old version of Family Tree Maker on an old computer. Other data I have on hand conflicts with the data. One source of information says Colville's father is named James Abercrombie and another says the father is named John Abercrombie. The other source says the grandfather of Colville is James Abercrombie. The statement somebody wrote about the indian bloodline does not apply to Colville according to my records. All I tried to do was help somone and I feel like I have walked into a bees nest. Goodbye.

I hope your suggestion wasn't serious! I KNOW my "documented" Abercrombie ancestry. Apparently, you must be looking for a certain answer to "support" your supposed Abercrombie ancestry? If so, what are you trying to determine or disprove? Otherwise, you are probably part Indian via your likely ancestor Mary Ann Beck. As to various other Abercrombies, I really don't care one way or the other. The problem with numerous Abercrombie researchers is that they assume they are somehow related to royalty and attempt to tie into the South Carolina Attorney General and his royal ancestry. Review Burke's and I think you'll see the writing on the wall! Tony Schoonover

I spent "considerable" time in the British and Scottish ancestry records...nothing positive to connect to my American Abercrombie line...numerous Abercrombies/Abercrombys. My Abercrombie line came from the north (probably Maryland through Virginia, to South Carolina and then Georgia. Sorry I couldn't have been much help! Tony Schoonover

I have seen several historical accounts of Abercrombies returning to Europe. Have you tried researching British records during any of your research? Where do you fall into the Abercrombie family? Are you an Abercrombie from Virginia, New York, Georgia, or South Carolina?

There were some early Abercrombies in the coastal areas of South Carolina, but they were distant relations to the South Carolina Attorney General (never married) and all returned to Europe before the Revolutionary War. I just don't find a connection! And I've researched the Abercrombie/Abercromby lines for years in an attempt to document the father and mother of the "Lauren's District" Abercrombies.

I remember studying something about how some Abercrombies went north and some went south. If you study the history of Jamestown and land grants in 1611 you might find something about an Abercrombie landing in Jamestown. Then you might connect the migration of some Abercrombies to the Dahlonega, Georgia area. I believe it was the search for gold that lead them to the Dahlonega area. The gold there was some of the purest gold in the world and it was quite abundant back then. The following source of information has a little data on Colville as well as other Abercrombies I thought I would share with you.

FIRST FAMILIES OF HENRY COUNTY, GEORGIA
EDITED WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY JOSEPH HENRY HIGHTOWER MOORE
COMPILED BY THE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY OF HENRY AND CLAYTON COUNTIES, GEORGIA, INC.
