Not sure how we connect. I think I have all of John Calvin's children listed from his marriage to Mary Alice Cole/Brown. Do you think your grandfather could have been conceived out of a marriage. It is very likely that John Calvin was. Franks' brothers in all records that I found are Johny Dillian, John, Rosco, Elmer, Roy. Where was your grandfather and father born?

My grandfather was John Calvin's oldest son: Joseph Franklin Ables, borned march 26 1886 in Giles County
Tennessee died June 21, 1962 in Paris, Texas. John Calvin Ables died in Paris, Texas 12/8/1927 and is buried in Hopewell Cemetery, north of Paris. Does this match your father and grandfather information

Actually, it was Icy Ann SIMMONS Ables who applied. She attempted to register through her father & grandmother's line. She claimed it was her grandmother who married a Simmons who was Chocktaw. This would not have been in the Ables direct line. If there were Native Americans on the Ables lines, perhaps it would show up in a DNA test; however, this would have to be done on a direct male decendant of the Ables lineage (unless it was on the female line).

Sharon,
Thanks for checking the Dawes Roll for Rhoda Abel. Since you have confirmed that it was your ancestor that applied with the Dawes Commision in your opinion based on the documents you read would you say that it was the Abel side that was Choctaw or the Morrison side that was Choctaw. I am just trying to determine if the Abels were native American or if they might have married indian women. Any help appreciated. Ross

Hi Sharon. I checked Fold 3 and they have a Rhoda Abel who applied with the Dawes Roll. My ancestor John B Abel or Ables born in the 1790's in Abbeville Dist SC and the brother of your James Abel was married to Rhoda Johnston in 1818 in Knox co TN. As you probably know they offer a seven day free membership to fold 3 but hyou have to cancel it before the seven day period or they will charge you and I don't want to do that because i would have to depend on them cancelling my free seven day subscription and I have heard some companies will tell hyou they will cancel gthe free membership but they don't cancel it in time so you are charged. Do you by chance have a subscription to Fold 3 so you could check to see if the Rhoda Abel or Ables that applied to the Dawes Commision was the wife of John B Abel or Ables. He must have died by 1870. I doubt it is the same on since the Dawes Commison was about 1896 and Rhoda Johnston Abel wass born about 1800. There were a number of entries for Rhoda Abel associated with the Dawes Commision but the first one I found had a description mentioning the surname Adams so it might be one of those deals where there is an article that might mention the name Rhoda in one sentence and Dawes in another sentence and Adams in another sentence but in the index it makes it look like Rhoda Abel applied with the Dawes Commision. thanks, Ross

Hi Sharon,
Thanks so much for the reply. My John B Ables born in 1793 in Abbeville dist SC then was your James's brother. John B Ables or Abel married a Rhoda Johnston in 1818 in Knox co Tennessee and had a son named Thomas M Abel or Ables born in 1832 in Tennessee and as you know the five brothers went to Randolph co Alabama in the early 1830's. Thomas M Ablwes married Lucinda Ray in 1862 in Winston co Al. They had a daughter Sarah Elizabeth Ables born in 1877 in Winston co Al. The reason I am sharing this with you is Sarah Elizabeth Ables married Lloyd E Costello Smith in 1892 in Monroe co Mississippi. I have heard many times that Sarah Elizabeth Ables was part native American but no one seems to know what kind of indian she was. That would mean that either her father Thomas M Ables was native American or her mother Lucinda Ray was native American or part native American. I have some questions if you could help me.

1. Was your GGGrandmother the one that married James Ables. Could she have been the indian or do you think James was?

2. I am not familiar with Fold3.com Could you tell me how to find the correspondance you were able to find?

3 John B Abel took an Amnesty Oath in 1867 in Winston co al. do you know if he died in Winston co Al or if he went back to Randolph co Al where he died? Solomon Ray,father of Lucinda ray, also took an Amnesty Oath in 1867 in Winston co Al.

4. John B Ables married Rhoda Johnston in 1818 in Knox co Tennessee. Do you know if the Ables brothers lived in Knox co Tennessee or maybe they married there because Rhoda Johnston lived in Knox co Tennessee. It seems I remember reading they lived also in Lincoln co Tennessee but I don't know if that is correct. Do you know which county they lived in before going to Alabama in the early 1830's?

Yes Ross,
I am a decendant of James Abels (Abel, etc. !)who was born 1797, (died 1850), and married Sarah Jane Morrison about 1825 in Tennessee. They moved to Alabama (Randolph County) in the 1840's. They had 17 children, 8 boys and 9 girls. Most of their boys and even the husbands of some of their girls, fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War. Later many of their sond and some of their daughters & the husbbands moved to Texas. My line eventually went to Oklahoma, with some finally ending up in California.
I believe we hqave connected through this board (or the Ancestry board before! Sharon

Yes, I also believe that we are distant cousins. As for the Chocktaw/native American connection.... many of Icy's decendants, and their spouses, feel that she may have had many Native American traits (coloring, high cheekbones, etc.). Icy claimed her father was 1/2 Chocktaw and married white, making her 1/4 Chocktaw. The outcome of the petitio to the Dawes Commission was ultimately to deny her claim as a member of the Chocktaw Nation as well as her children.(her father had not registered as Native American; but, at that period of time Native Americans were not favorably looke upon. If they were "light enough, they passed for white, if they had darker skin, they were often enummerated in the census as Mulatto!)

Hello,
It looks like we are distant cousins. I was thinking that possibly Andrew Jackson Ables married a Choctaw woman because he was Choctaw. Just an idea. I think usually a white man married a native American woman but I am sure there were times that a white woman married a native American man and of course many times a native American man would marry a native American woman. Had you seen in your research any other reference to an Ables or Abel possibly being native American? Thanks, Ross

There are 135 scanned pages in the Fold3 records. ( I have found that these pages are not in cronogical order)

Sharon,
Thanks for the reply. Your James Abel who was married to Sarah Jane Morrison was one of the Abel brothers born in the 1790's and the early 1800's in Abbeville District, SC. They all went to Tennessee and then to eastern Alabama. My ancestor, John B Abel, was the brother of James Abel. He married a Rosannah or Roxanna Johnson in I believe Knox co Tn in 1818. They had a number of children and Thomas M Abel born in TN in 1832 was my ancestor. All the Abel brothers went to eastern Alabama about 1833. John B Abel went to Winston co Al. His son Thomas M Abel married Lucinda Ray in 1862 in Winston co al. Lucinda Ray was the daughter of Solomon Ray.
I have read that Moses Abel or Ables and wife Nancy were the parents of the five Abel brothers but I think they might have been their grand parents if rrelated at all. Someone wrote a book about 1900 and said Moses Ables was the father of the five Abel brothers. It was a book about people that went to Texas. I checked the 1800 census for Abbeville District SC and there were only two Abels or Ables. I can't remember the spelling . I believe the Joseph Abels listed was their father. James named one of his sons Joseph. He also named a son MOses and a daughter Nancy so I can not say for sure. I would like to work with you on this family if you would like to. It does not seem like many people had researched this line of Abels.
This is interesting. Thomas M Abel born 1832 and son of John B Abel married Lucinda Ray in 1862 in Winston co Al. They had a daughter Sarah Elizabeth Ables born in 1877 in Winston co Al. She was my great grandmother. Many people have told me that Sarah Elizabeth Ables was indian aor part indian. She married Lloyd Costello Smith in 1892 in Monroe co Mississippi. I do not know why they were in Mississippi. I assume that since Sarah was only fifteen when she married Lloyd Costello Smith that Thomas M Abel and wife Lucinda Ray were in Monroe co Ms also. I think they might have been share croppers. Many people have told me that it was common knowledge that Sarah was part native
american but no one seems to know what kind. She had a brother Mark Ables born in 1888 in Alabama. I contacted some of his children who are still living and they said Mark had told them when whey were young that he was part indian and told them what kind of indian but they did not remember. That would mean that if Sarah was part indian then either her father Thomas M Ables or her mother Lucinda Ray was an indian or maybe both of them full blooded or part indian. Would you have any information about if the Abels were part indian? thanks, Ross

The James Able/Ables who was married to Sarah Jane Morrison was born in 1797 and died in 1849 of pneumonia. I believe he was decended from the SC Ables clan, perhaps a son of one of the original brothers. I have been unable to ascertain who his parents or grandparents were; some say Moses and Nancy Ables but I have not seen any proof of this.

Donna Walker, please contact me. We are related and you have your facts incorrect. The Indian on your side was from Rosie Phillips who married Will Abel. Will and my grandfather were brothers. Will was born in TN. and J.W. (Jiggs) was his son. Jigg's was the brother of your grandmother. I lived near Will and Rosie for years. They did move back and forth from TN. to AR. for awhile. I have more information on the family. As far as I know, Will Able never owned any land. Jiggs wife had a relative who if I am not mistaken left land to her. Please contact me at debbie.prosser26@gmail.com. Would love to give you correct information on your family. I remember when Aunt Rose passed away and I also remember when Uncle Do, as we called him passed away. Jiggs and his wife Lucille are both dead and they died in KY. I grew up with Jigg's daughter and we were best friends throughout our childhood. My mother is still living and she remembers your mother.

As a decendant of Andrew Jackson ("Doc") Ables... I have found that his wife (Icy Ann Simmons) Ables had petitioned the Dawes Commission to have herself and her children acknowledged as Cherokee based upon her father's parentage. This was DENIED by the commission. I found about 30+ correspondences on what is now www.Fold3.com. which documented this proceeding. Andrew Jackson Ables & Icy Ann lived in Texas and finally in Oklahoma after migrating from Alabama. A.J. was the child of James Abel/Ables & Sara Jane
Morrison. (AJ was one of 17 children)
Re: Mrs. Sarah ABLES born c1793 TN

The ABLES line is not my line of research, however the ABLES married into my GOFORTH line which is what I am researching. I do have a Mary Nancy ABLES born Jan 1852 in Wayne County, TN and married 17 Aug 1880 in Ballard County, KY. to Willam Berry FRENCH. I do believe Mary Nancy Ables to be the daughter of King Hiram ABLES, however, as I said I have not documented this line of research. King Hiram is listed on the 1870 Census of Ballard County, KY with his family and Mary fits the right age if you would like to research.

Regards,
Barbara (GOFORTH) Fitzwater
