Dear Joanne:
Thanks for This reply. The family name of CACIOPPO, for Catherine MONTALBANO'S mother's family name was new to me. Do you also know what her first name was and Catherine's father's name? Catherine married Joseph Giuseppe Abruzzo, probably in Sambuco in The Late 1890s it would be nice if somebody has a c opy of This marriage record to learn his parents names. Please let me know if you also received The GUZZARDO/ Abruzzo Family Tree that I had sent you a few days ago to your direct E-mail address, if not please write me at mine which is:
HowardSedlitz@Gmail.com

I am the granddaughter of Stefano (Steve) Abruzzo, brother of John Abruzzo. He was married to Josephine Maniscalco. Their oldest son, Joseph, is my father. We lived in Chicago, Illinois. Grandpa was born November 20, 1900 and died January 11, 1980. I know that Grandpa's mother was Catherine Montalbano and his father was Guiseppi Abruzzo. Catherine's mother was a Cacioppo. How are you related to John? I remember Uncle John and Aunt Felicia very well. They were wonderful. I am the oldest grandchild of Steve and Josephine. I was born 6/3/1951. You can contact me at joanne.rossman@comcast.net

I'm impressed that you've found out as much as you have. My neighbor growing up is my younger sister's age (about 30) and she was adopted. She searched a few years ago and was never able to find out anything about her birth parents. The only thing she knows is that her birth mother was 15.

That was a few years ago I don't know if she'd be able to find more now. I think the records could not be released unless her birth mother was also looking for her.

I'm starting with a lot more info then you have and I'm hitting walls left and right in my search. Unless I take a trip to Italy (and with 3 kids under 6 - it's unlikely) I think I may be taking a break from the Abruzzo's for a while. If you are able to find out that a great grandfather of yours had a sister named Rose/Rosa contact me. I'd love to know if we were able to link up the families. Good luck. Your story sounds fascinating and I hope you are able to find out more.
Oh- the Santo Abruzzo in the info I gave you was killed in a bar in little Italy in Manhattan in the early 1900's. His wife was a widow by the 1910 census. The family didn't have money to bury him so he was burried in Potter's field. I heard that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Maybe he tried to break something up - not sure, but I believe he was shot. He's my great-great grandfather. -Jen

hi jen.

thanks for all the info. what i do know is that my father was born in the year 1940 to a joseph abruzzo and a helen reynoso. for some reason, he was given up for adoption when he was a 2 years old. i was in contact with a woman who may be a relative of yours who said that her abruzzo family is the only abruzzos she knows of in san francisco.

joseph abruzzo (my grandfather) was killed in a hunting accident around 1940. there are no records that joseph and helen reynoso ever married. also, they had another child before my father whom they named joseph. he was given to his grandparents who raised him. so, there are 2 men who were born 1938 and 1940 by the name of joseph abruzzo, (after their father), but, both were given up for adoption.

it's a difficult story to follow only because i am having to dig up the pieces from the help of people on this message board and from working to get documents and records released. it took a while to have my father's actual birth records unsealed and released to me because california is very strict with adoption records. but, i do know that his birth father is joseph abruzzo and his mother is helen reynoso. i don't know anything about helen reynoso or the abruzzo family.

i will keep in contact with you and let you know what i can find out through the other woman (abruzzo family member) who was helping me for a while. i hope she continues to help...

ciao
chelsea

Just in case you get some info I thought I'd give you what I have.

Santo ABRUZZO b. Sciacca d.NY m. Vincenza DEPAULO b.1860Sciacca d.19__NY
they had a son Guiseppe ABRUZZO b. Sciaca 3/25/1881 d.1970,NY. He was married to Vincenza Trapani b.1891,Sciaca d.1987,Brooklyn NY. Guiseppe & Vincenza had 9 chilren (the second of which was my maternal grandmother Jenny ALIA).

Now as how it may relate to you if you can go back far enough...Santo Abruzzo who married Vincenza DEPAULO had a brother and sister. I do not have their names. That brother had two children. A girl named Rose and a boy named Joseph. Joseph moved to San Francisco. Rose was born in 1894 and died 12/14/1985. She was married to Antonio ABRUZZO b. 1890-d.1927 and then married to a man who's last name I believe was Friscia. They never had children.

I'm assuming that Joseph ABRUZZO that moved to San fran might be a great-grandfather of yours. It's a big assumption but if there really is only one ABRUZZO family in San fran...then...who knows.

I got most of this info from one of Santo's grand-daughters (my great-aunt). I also spoke to uncles of mine yesterday and they too said we had Abruzzo relatives in San Francisco but didn't know them.

See how many holes there are in all this? One thing that might be somewhat helpful to you is that in this "Italian or family tradition" children are named after the paternal grandparents and theh the maternal. First boy after paternal, second boy after maternal, third girl after paternal, 4th a girl would be after maternal grandmother. It's very true of how children were named in my family for generations and generations. Good luck. -Jen

I may be distantly related as well then too. My family member moved to San Fran moved in the early 1900's. It is pretty distant and I got all the info I could from my great-aunt a couple of years ago and all they know was his name and that he moved to San Fran. The family wasn't very literate and probably didn't stay in touch. I don't have any info on his parents and that's where I'm stuck on my tree. If you do find anything from around the turn of the century I'd love to see it and see if I can patch some holes. Good luck with your search - I've found so much info on here it's amazing. My Italian side has been the most difficult to trace so far. I know about when some came over but not all and there was a lot of marriages to cousins and I'm not sure how all the cousins are related. I'm looking for Abruzzo/Trapani/Alia/DePaulo/Gutta/Friscia & Sclafani. Ciao & buon fortuna! -Jen

hi jen.

thanks so much for responding. another woman from the abruzzo family responded and told me that her family is the only abruzzo family that located to san francisco. i do believe that she and i are related. i have all birth docs and my father's birth name is indeed abruzzo. but, he was adopted at the age of 2 years old. his father (joseph abruzzo, my grandfather), past away right after my father was born. this may be a reason as to why my father was given up for adoption--because the mother (helen reynoso) was single and could not afford to care for him--or perhaps she was too heart-broken (we'll never know.)

the search has stopped for now because i need more info from this woman, but, i'm guessing that the curiosity has waned on her part. i really don't know...

i thank you for your info. that's cool to know that the abruzzos are from sciacca. my landlord is from sciacca and came here as a little girl. i also have a close friend whose family is from sciacca and settled in san francisco around the early 1900's. a lot of sicilians settled here in san francisco.

ciao!
chelsea

Hi,
I realize I am most likely not being any help but there may be a connection. I have Abruzzo's in my family and I live in NY. The Abruzzo's came over from Sciacca Sicily. My great-great grandfather Santo Abruzzo came to the US in the late 1800's and his wife Vincenza Depaulo was a widow by the 1910 census. This family all stayed in NY. His son Guiseppe Abruzzo (1881-1970) was my great grandfather and he too stayed in NY with his wife Vincenza Trapani & their 9 children.
Santo Abruzzo had a sister and a brother and I do not know their first names. Santo's brother had 2 children - Rose (1894-1985) & Guiseppe. Rose was married twice - First to an Antonio Abruzzo (1890-1927) and then to someone with the last name Friscia. Guiseppe went to San Francisco. I have no info on him at all. If you can find adoption records you might find a link. Maybe not. Good luck. I'm new to this. -Jen

Kathy, I don't have anything on your Maria Giambalvo m. Luciano Abruzzo in my Giambalvo database. Do you know for sure whether they were from Santa Margherita di Belice? There's another clan of Giambalvos from Trapani, and others elsewhere in Sicily. If from SMB, I can ask my Sicilian relatives if they know of this branch, but I'd need to know more about their children, since this was so long ago. You can correspond directly with me at jacintac@optonline.net.
Regards,
Jaci Coleman

We would love to find out about her family, We believe her father's name was Sebastian. They were from Sicily and came to Brooklyn.
Any information would be much appreciated.
Kathy

Rosemary, I'm afraid we've struck out for now. I don't have any Vincenzo Giambalvo in my database. Perhaps the Sicilian relatives can help -- I'll bring your names with me and perhaps someone will recognize where he fits. Here's hoping...
Regards,
Jaci

Hi Jaci, Maria Abruzzo Giambalvo's husband was my great grandfather Vincenzo. They had a few children. They had Maria, Antonio (who died young) and my grandfather Francesco. My grandfather's sister Maria married an Abruzzo to complicate matter further. Hope this helps. Thanks, Rosemary

If you believe this is who you are looking for please contact me.

Mary Jane Annino

Hi Linda and Albert,

Though I do not know if my Abruzzo family lived on Schaffer St. my great aunt, Rita Giovinco Abbate (whose mother was Vita Liotta and a first cousin of the whole Abruzzo clan). There was also a distant relative, whose now in her 80s, named Rosalia Pascale, her maiden name was Msomething. Anyhow, she was also somehow (no one remembers, though we see each other regularly) to the Liotta/Abruzzo families. There was also another relative, Sal Cartafalsa, a lawyer from the area and a relative to the Liottas and I think Abruzzos. Let me know if anything sounds familiar. The rest of my family lived closer to Wilson/Knickerboker/and Hart St.

My Best,
Alan
