My great grandfather was Henry Absalom, b. 27 March 1828 in Pontnewydd, Monmuthshire, Wales. (His father was Joseph Absalom who worked as a Baller, mother’s name is unknown.)

My great grandmother, Henry,s wife, was Jane Allen, born 27 March 1831 in Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales. Her father was John Allen who worked as a boatbuilder, mother was Elizabeth Marshall. Both were born in Padstow, Cornwall, England.

Henry and Jane were married on 22 March 1851 in Treforest, Wales. We have a copy of the marriage certificate that states he was a Baller, she a dressmaker. Both lived in Treforest. One witness to the marriage was Bessey Allen, possibly a sister of Jane’s. Marriage took place in the parish church in Eglwysilan, County of Glamorgan, Wales.

Henry and Jane had 14 children (based on US Census data). We know of four born in Wales: Henry b. abt. 1861; John A. b. abt. 1866; William Charles, b. August 09, 1867; and Charles Allen, b. September 1870. These six came to America in 1870, shortly after Charles Allen Absalom was born. Ports of embarkation and entry, name of ship and exact departure and arrival dates are all unknown. At least two more children were born in the United States: Lillie J. Absalom and George Marshall Absalom (my grandfather).
