Abston

To begin: Abston is not a common name and it is likely that if you connect with this surname you will be related in some way to whomever you find. I have been researching the 1900 census records of Roane county, Tennessee and because there can be errors made in the spelling of a name, I have been doing it district by district, line by line. At this point I am at Civil District 13, District 123 - which the record states is a part of Rockwood, Roane county, Tennessee. And yes, I found what I was looking for; my husband's great grandparents - Charles Alexander Abston and his wife - Celia I. Hedgecoth plus three of their children - the eldest being my husband's grandfather - Stephen Robert Abston. So why don't I stop? Because at this point, I also found two other Abston families. Lewis Abston, born March 1849, born in Tennessee; and William Abston, born February 1850 in Tennessee - his father is stated as having been born in Virginia and his mother in Tennessee. I neglected to state that my husband's 2nd great grandfather was living with his son in the 1900 census and his name was also Charles Alexander Abston, he was born in 1838 in Kentucky - his father was born in Kentucky and his mother in Virginia. At this point in time I can't say that I will find a connection between Lewis and William with my husband's line but at least I am going to try and find out plus go on researching the Roane county 1900 census for any other Abston families that might be out there. Remember that it's NOT a common name and it's just possible!!!

I've recently started tracking down relatives of Daniel Murphey who arrived at Charles Co, Md in 1678. Do you think our lines are related? My husband, James William Murphy jr. great great grandfather was Joseph Murphy who settled in Overton Co. TN. I would appreciate any info you might have for the Murphy tree.
Thanks,
Alice Murphy

I tried to send a reply to your message but the computer locked up and I doubt if you received it. I have tried to find Allen Abston in the 1930 census through Ancestry.com but was unable to find anything on him. I know that the name is sometimes spelled ABSTAN so I am going to go back in and see if I can get a clue from that spelling.

Steve - my husband - told me that the Abston's and the Vitatoe's had very little to do with each other. I gather they were not a close knit family; infact I have never met any of his family other than his parents and brothers.

The 1900 Census of Roane County TN has Charles Alexander Sr, age 62, in the house of his son, Charles Jr, age 33. It shows Charles Sr as widowed, and the children are Charles Jr and Cela I Abston's. So, that makes your Allen the child of Charles Alexander Abston Jr and Cela/Celie, and that is who you have in the 1910 Census. Charles Sr is not on the 1910 Census, so he may have died. I also looked for them in the 1920 Census and could not find them. The parents of Charles Jr, Charles Alexander Abston and Margeret Ann Devaney, are on the 1860, 1870, and 1880 Census for Roane County, TN with children. They are too old, born about 1838 and 1825, to have a child born in 1908, as the 1910 Census says would be the date of birth for Allen. I don't know if this helps you to find Allen, but I haven't looked for him in the 1930 Census.

Allen Abston of Roane county, Tennessee

I am looking for information on a Allen Abston, born in 1908, in Roane county, Tennessee. He is a son of Charles Alexander Abston and Margaret Ann Devaney. According to the 1910 census, Charles and Margaret had nine children of which five were living; for some reason I can't seem to locate them in the 1920 census but by the 1930 census Charles and Margaret had one more child - making a total of ten children - six who lived. I believe that I have the marriages of five of those children: Stephen or Steven Robert Abston married Maud Mae McElroy - this is my husband's grandparents; Margaret A. Abston married Samuel Limburg; Sarah H. (Sudie) Abston married Elbert Brogdon; Kate Elizabeth Abston married William Arthur Cole; and John Welzie Abston married Stella Pauline Carroll. This leaves Allen the only living one unacounted for. Cam anyone help me locate him?

If this is the same Mildred, she is my Aunt, as she married my mother's younger brother Leo Joseph FAY. They had two boys, Thomas and Gary Joe, in Akron Ohio, then moved with Lee's mother to California, where they lived for years in Thousand Oaks, Ventura Co. I have her DoB as 31 Oct 1922 in Oliver Springs, near Oakridge TN. Her father is Thomas ABSTON and her mother was a BOOTH, which, according to Uncle Lee was Margaret Jane BOOTH. Aunt Millie was really wonderful humerous person and I loved going out to Thousand Oaks to visit. She died in Paso Robles CA 1 Oct 1988, after a long battle with COPD which was hard on her, but she was funny and cheerful as always. If you are her grand daughter, I'm thinking you must be Ericka. You may contact me at brokenknee38@yahoo.com.

Mystery is solved. There is no Belle Abston that married George Buckner. George Buckner's fist wife was Lizzie Simms and the mother of Belle and Robert Lee Buckner. I have left a post-um on the Roots Web Tree for George Buckner and Belle Abston. Belle Buckner did marry Isaac Abston. Information provided by Marsha Jarvis and death certificate for Belle Abston.

I would like to get more info on your mother if you don't mind.

Take Care,
Jim Smith
smith69@charter.net

Hi, Thought I could help but after checking my data base I could not make a connection. I did find where George Buckner married Lizie Hyder on 2 Oct 1878 in Putnam County TN. On the 18 Jun 1880 census he was married to Lizzie and the father of Robbert, 3 and Katie 1 mo. I would assume that Robbert or Bobbert would be the child of another wife. Could be a Belle Abston you mentioned. George was single on the 1870 census in Putnam County. I'll keep looking but no help at this time.
Jim Smith

There were three kids born to Tom Jenkins and Emma Doggett. They were James William, Jospeh Benjamin and Ella Fair Jenkins. We assume that John and Mary Abston adopted them but not Joseph Benjamin Jenkins.
Jim

Patricia--we have two email addresses: timisabell@gmail.com and timisabell@cox.net. Both of them should work. We have relocated to Bentonville, Arkansas after living in Wyoming for 60 years. I am anxious to corroborate on Abston genealogy with you!!

I was raised and taught that James William Abston, (my grandmothers father) was born to Emily Jenkins, father unknown) but raised by his aunt, Mary Jane Jenkins and her husband, John Abston. However, my aunt (Elva Shaw) received a letter in 2007 from Sandra Jenkins Little in Mobile Alabama stating that James was the birth child of Tom Jenkins, a Choctaw Indian who didn't want to leave Choctaw County, Alabama so he assumed the Jenkins name and married a white woman named Emma Doggett. They had three children and she didn't want to raise them so they were "farmed out" or put up for guardian ship. James and his sister, Ella Fair were raised by John and Mary Jane (Jenkins) Abston as was an Emma Shirley. Emma also assumed the Abston surname. I feel pretty confident about the descendents of James William--just hoping to get an ancestory for him . . .

I look forward to hearing from you!

Rita Isabell

There is a George Abston that was born 12 Aug 1923 and passed Jan 1984. I think this is your Grand Father. There is a George Thomas Abston that was born about 1924 in MS that I can't find any data on other than the 1930 census.
