Thanks for your information. There seems to be a lot of Ace,s in Wales. We did see the smaller stone of William Ace next to the one of Thomas Ace, we took photo's of them. It was very quite place when we were there, we didn't see any of the locals.
I am trying to enter the connection service to receive you, as yet unable to do so, will have another go tomorrow.Regards sheila

Hello! It's great to hear from you too. These Port Eynon Aces are really quite confusing as they were somewhat traditional/unimaginative when naming their children! Your ancestor Thomas was the brother of my ancestor John. I have found a baptism record for a Thomas Ace son of Thomas and Ann Ace on 6th august 1843 at St Cattwgs. I think this is your ancestor who went on to marry Mary Davies. His younger brother John was baptised at St Cattwg's in 1847 and later married Eleanor (Ellen) Jenkins. You found the same headstone that we did next to the doorway at St. Cattwg's and I believe it belongs to the great grandfather of our ancestors mentioned above. You may also have seen the the small marker next to the headstone by the doorway, this is rather sad as I think it belongs to William Ace born 1834 and died aged only 2 years old in 1836. Had he survived he would have been John and Thomas's uncle. I have tried to work backwards using the parish records for St. Cattwg's and although everything seems to match up, it is quite possible I have made mistakes or incorrect assumptions. But I think that our ancestors parents were Thomas Ace baptised 6 June 1821 and married to an older woman Ann Phillip baptised 1st March 1810. I think they were married in 1842 in Swansea. Thomas was the son of Thomas Ace baptised 6th aug 1797 and Sarah Hopkin baptised 25th June 1801. They were married at St Cattwg's on 3rd Sept 1820. They had at least 10 children including little William mentioned above. They can be found living next door to Sarah's parents by searching through the 1841 census for Port Eynon, but strangely don't show up through a name search. Thomas was the son of another Thomas, the one whose headstone is at St Cattwg's. He married Eleanor Morgan (born about 1765) on 5th July 1791. I can only find baptism records for two children, rather predictably named Thomas and John!
I have a little more information about in-laws and siblings if you are interested. Most of the information is also on my online Ancestry tree. I will try again to contact you via the connection service rather than post my details on the public message boards. I would love to know more about your branch of the family, I have managed to gather names and dates about my John's descendants but have very little personal information. I wonder if your contacts might know anything about my branch?
Wonderful to hear from you, sorry I somehow missed your first message, I'm not very good on these messageboards.I too visited Port Eynon with my sister in November 2008. We went to the churchyard, and found a stone outside the church door with Thomas Ace on it, didn't find the grave.I am also decended from his son Thomas born 1844, but I have him married to a Mary (Davies) from Sketty. One of their children is Mary Ann born 1870, who is my Great Granmother. Mary Ann has a brother named Thomas Ace and I am in contact with his daughter. My Grandmother is buried at Oystermouth Cemetery with Thomas Ace wife Mary and her Aunt Margaret. Would love to hear back from you, to find our connection.

Sorry, my mistake, just to clarify, the gravestone we found in St. Cattwg's may belong to the grandfather of the Thomas Ace b. 1821 that you have been discussing. Thomas b. 1821 was the son of Thomas Ace b.1797 and Sarah Hopkin. Thomas Ace b.1797 is I think the son of Thomas Ace b. 1769 and Eleanor Morgan. This Thomas lived in Overton just next to Port Eynon and died October 15th 1830 aged 62 making him born around 1768.

Hello!
I was really interested to see your messages as I am descended from the same Thomas Ace born in 1922 in Port Eynon. I think I have made a few more connections using the GFHS listings for Port Eynon and last weekend my sister and I travelled to Port Eynon where we think we found his grave stone in the churchyard at St. Cattwgs. I would really like to share information with anyone interested in the Aces from Port Eynon and Oystermouth. My branch of the family comes through Thomas's son John b1847 who moved from Port Eynon to Oystermouth where he married Ellen Jenkins. Sheilabrading, I did try to contact you some time ago via the connections service but did not hear back from you. GHHollinghurst, I would be so grateful if you would ask the person you are researching for if you could share your information with me. I am really happy to share anything I have with anyone who is interested. I look forward to hearing from anyone interested in the Gower Aces.

If you want that information, let me know. Thank you for the information that you sent, please thank the Ace member that you are researching for.

Result! It is the same Thomas. His father was Thomas 1821-1904, mariner, lived 1851-1871 in Village Lane, Porteynon, m1842 Ann Phillips (b1812? daughter of Thomas). His grandfather was Thomas b1801?, agricultural labourer of Porteynon, m Sarah(b1801?, died 1843 of inflammation of the bowels). In 1871 your Thomas was a dredger, living in Village Lane; in 1881 at 4 Givelins; in 1895 Glovers Row. Children Mary Ann 1870?,Thomas John 1871(fisherman Thistleboon,m1902 Annie Godbeer), William Phillip 1873(labourer,m1897 Frances Ann Rees), Sarah Jane 1875 (m1900 George Williams, gardener), Margaret Ellen 1878, George 1880-1882, Ruth 1883. Thomas John had 4 children: Thomas John Jr 1902 (2nd coxswain of lifeboat), Hilda, Kathleen Ivy (m 1933 Frederick Hickson), Doris. William Phillip had 2: Beatrice May (m1919 Herbert Chanter) and William George. Hope this is useful. I have details of some of your Thomas's aunts, uncles, siblings, nephews, neices etc if you are interested. The Ace I am researching for has given her permission: she is descended from Abraham Ace of Penrice whose grandson (also called Abraham and keeper of the Mumbles lighthouse) and great-granddaughters took part in a famous rescue of shipwrecked men in February 1883. No doubt the Ace families were all related but I don't suppose we can get back far enough to prove how.
Isn't it exciting when you find a link?
regards

My gt gt gt grandmother was Mary Ann Ace who was married in the parish church in Swansea on 9 Dec 1851. Her father was John Ace, a cooper by trade, and one of her witnesses was a Samuel Ace, She married William Bass who was a sailmaker. I think they had 3 children - Annie (b 1856); William John Brynon (b 1858); and Samuel George (b 1860). They were christened at St Mary's Swansea which I assume is the parish church. I am hoping someone is connected to me with these names - there are so many Ace names in the Glamorgan area, that I don't know where I fit. If you can help - please contact me!

Hello: Do you have any further information on Peter Treible? I am trying to identify the writer of a 1948 diary from Stroudsburg PA which mentions an Uncle Peter and Aunt Lizzie. I believe the Peter was a Peter Treible born in 1892 in Stroudsburg who died there in April 1968. I am trying to find out if there is an Earl or Clara in Peter's family, as there are aunts and uncles with those names in the diary.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Norm Dawson
Calgary AB

Hi,
St Mary's Church is in the middle of the town centre. I guess the parish is in the centre of town also. Gower is about 10 or so miles from Swansea. ie. The Gower Peninsula. Lots of beaches and unspoilt scenery etc. A lot of farming communities years ago. Also tin works and smelting works in the north of Gower from early 1800's.

Hi
Have had a little success in finding a few more Aces. End of line is John Ace - born about 1801 in Glamorgan. Was a cooper by trade (1841 census and daughter's marriage cert).
Wife is Elizabeth (think her maiden name was Beynon) there is a marriage in 1823. (think this was at Gower so assume that this is a different area to Swansea)
All the kids christened in St Mary's church in Swansea
Their children:
John born 1824
Samuel born 1827
Mary Ann born about 1830 (my gt gt gt grandmother)
George born 1832
William born 1834 (died as infant)
Elizabeth born 1836
William II born 1838 (died as infant)
Susannah born 1840

See a lot of information re: gower and penrice and nicholston, etc Would like to establish where St Mary's parish was exactly and whether anyone else links into my line....
Thanks heaps in advance!
Rachael
