Many from this line have read (or has a copy) of the Acheson history on the paternal side written by A.W. Acheson in 1877. In this document it is noted that members of the family would meet each Oct 31. I don't know when this meeting died out as I cannot find any further documentation on other meetings.
Does anyone have any info on further meetings?
Would anyone be interested is setting up a meeting of direct survivors of this family in 2010?
South Lynn in MD has the original paintings of Gen. Thomas Acheson and some close relatives and I have some photos of the grave site of some of this family. It would be interesting to get together to meet family and exchange information.

It is quite likely although I have very little info about Sarah or her family. I did get a copy of the will of her husband (John Acheson) when I visited New Brunswick a few years ago. It is beatifully written and mentions her. If I come across anything regarding the Adams family I will post it.
Marcia
mwallis@telusplanet.net

I think there is a strong possibility that our Adams families are related. My Sarah Elizabeth Adams was the daughter of a Harris mother and a Norris grandmother. Does that agree with what you have? I have a good history of the Adams family that was given to me by Milton Bush of Connecticut, who has a very large file on the family. I have also been to New Brunswick and found the family listed in the Library in St. John. It seems they had two deaf children and one deaf granddaughter. I have also been to Nova Scotia where Alexander Graham Bell had his estate, and I wonder if there was a connection between the two. It appears as though the deafness might have been hereditary.

Would you like info on our Adams family?

Regards,

Syble

Grandma always said that she was the second cousin of Dean acheson and that he was called Dean because he was the son/ grandson of a Dean of the church. I am new to this but my GGGGrandfather was born in Ireland in 1798 - John and married to Mary. Help much appreciated Doreen

John Acheson b.abt 1790 of Derrylow Co.Roscommon had children by his second marriage. The eldest was Mary Jane (1838-bef1901) who married William Acheson (1827-1908) of Rock View, Lough Arrow, Boyle, Sligo. Of their 14 children Thomas Alexander (Sandy) Acheson (1876-1952) was the 11th and he married Amelia Jane (Emily) Chambers (1883-1969). They had 11 children with your father Basil Noel Acheson (1913- ) as the 3rd child. Here is where my details end. I hope this helps.
The only Acheson families in the area are Rudolph Peter Acheson and his wife Joan Shrives who live in Andresna House almost on the banks of Lough Arrow. Rudolph is the youngest brother of Basil.
My connection you ask? My mother was an Acheson descended from John's older brother James.

Achesons in co. Tyrone, Ireland

I am trying to trace my family history back through Ireland in the late 1700s/early 1800s. I know that a Charles Acheson died in co. Tyrone in the 1830s or 1840s, the husband of a Sarah Condy Acheson who later emigrated to the US (1866). I can find no record of either Acheson inside of Ireland, though Sarah Acheson does appear on US Census records.

Does anyone have any information about these two people, or how to search for them? I am not familiar with burial practices in the 1830s/1840s in northern Ireland. I assume that the family was very poor; would this mean an unmarked grave, or possibly cremation? Is there a record out there if I keep looking, or is it likely that no record remains of their lives in Ireland?

your father's names are unusual for acheson's but his father alexander is very common both in washington, pa acheson's as well as in scottish acheson's. you will know that acheson's originated in scotland, many in edinburgh and also in preston pans a dozen miles or so outside of the latter--now called preston grange. in the early 1600's irish lords rebelled, lost and fled leaving estates unmanaged. king james gave that land to his scottish friends among whom were 2 brothers henry and archibald acheson on the condition that those lands be manned and defended. thus many acheson's migrated to ireland after 1606 in what is called the irish plantation. henry went back to scotland after a while but archibald, by now the baron of gosford in markethill, armaugh kept on (he still had a house in edinburg which to this day is called acheson house which is in the process of a major renovation--google it). subsequent archibald offspring became viscount and eventually earl's of gosford. their castle in market hill still stands and is now a condo/real estate development--google it too. one earl of gosford had 3 gorgeous daughters in the 1800's painted in a stunning portrait by john singer sargeant...google it too. one of the earl's daughters in the 1900's married von stauffenberg's brother (the guy who tried to assasinate hitler). my part of the family stems from archibald and henry's uncle back in scotland and our ancestors followed archibald to ireland. during the 1700's however there was considerable unrest, riots, massacres, religious and political battles all of which left terrible records such that it can be difficult to trace the irish acheson's during those years. then various groups of achesons started to migrate elsewhere...to canada (the dean acheson family went fro ireland to canada to the usa); to washington, pa (my family--in the early 1800's); to england of course, to australia and elsewhere.
i hope some ifthis helps but i too am in search of irish-based ancestry data.
regards, m a r k

There are several books (collections of papers and letters) about the Acheson's of PA.

I have a few that are on the computer and can be sent to anyone. They include some data put together about David Acheson, son of David Acheson of Washington, PA and his death at Gettysburg. This is just a document I have with references to other letters and books. I also have the book Inscription at Gettysburg about Davids life and death and covers some of his family with a few pictures. I have the 'A History of the Acheson Family' that I can scan and send out. This was written by A.W.Acheson of Washington, Pa who Alexander Wilson Acheson, son of David Acheson and Mary Cunningham Wilson.

I have also scanned in a copy of a letter between Colonal Thomas Acheson of PA to/from Pres. Jefferson on a regiment Acheson raised for the war.

email me at LCORRENE@aol.com if you would like copies of any of this, and/or exchange data.

Check my Acheson line back to 1400 in Scotland/England at http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/a/c/h/Lois-Corren...

Acheson and Lynn Families

This is just info: For anyone interested in the Acheson line of General Thomas Acheson, of the Washington PA Achesons and their connection with the Lynn family of Maryland.

One of his granddaughters, Mary Jane Acheson married David Lynn. One of their children, David Lynn, married Margaret Allen Trimble. David also was an architect on the Capital building in Washington, DC. as well as other buildings in D.C.

One of their sons, South Lynn, has the original painting of General Thomas Acheson and Lavinia Acheson that were done by Gilbert Stuart.

I have posted pictures and links to the wonderful Lynn sites on my personal genealogy site.

www.solutionfactory.com/gene/

would like more info on this connection.

Lois Acheson-Kaplan

Acheson and Hosea Miller Ohio

My g-grandfather, Thomas Weir Acheson b. Apr 8, 1811 in PA was married to Katherine Leavitt Hooker b. Apr 20, 1918 in Conn.

Thomas died Dec 14, 1862. Katherine married Hosea W Miller in 1865, and he died a few months later, Jan 28, 1866.

I have found Thomas and Katherine Acheson and Hosea Miller living in the same area on a census 1860 Census Report. Quite by accident and Thomas's last name was mispelled, but the children match up.

I think Thomas may have died in the civil war and that Hosea married Katherine, possible to leave her his property as he seemed to have been well off... this is just conjecture.

Does anyone have any information on this marriage?

thanks in advance.

Lois Acheson-Kaplan

I am tracking Thomas (Weir) Acheson who lived with his wife Katherine Leavitt Hooker in Ohio from at least 1840 until his death Dec 14, 1862. He died just before his last child, Mortimer, was born. Married Sept 1840 in Franklin County, OH

I believe he may have died in the civil war and I have found 2 listings for a Thomas Acheson, Regiment name 5 Ohio Calvery and Regiment 120 Ohio Infantry.

Does anyone have any info on either of these two Thomas Achesons?

Thanks

Lois Acheson-Kaplan

I am sure we are connected somewhere back in the "Olde Country" but we're not sure how or when. My family information does not go deep enough into Ireland to know. My Aunt Gert claims that g-g-g-GrandFather Weir Acheson was born in Lower Longfield, County Tyrone, Ireland in either 1781 or 1778. If this ties into your George Acheson of 1724 somehow, sometime on our researchs, Great!

I looked at your FTM information, thanks. Jim.

Mary Elizabeth Acheson Libby - Oregon, Washington

Mary Elizabeth Acheson married Paul Everard Libby.
He was born January 1, 1922 in Los Angeles, the second child of Lucille Tretheway and Dr. Walter E. Libby, missionaries in China prior to World War II.
Paul and Mary Elizabeth Acheson's children were born in Salem, Oregon. The family settled in Portland, Oregon.
Paul retired from the State Highway Department in 1977 and was listed in Public Records as late as 2008, an indication he may still be alive.

The Lincoln (Maine) Historical Society's book committee would like to contact Paul, descendents, extended family or friends to better complete the biography of Dr. Walter E. Libby, a Lincoln native, in their next publication.
The lives of Libby's five children after China and their children would be frosting on the cake.
Thank you.
Descendants of Charles Acheson

I am Colista Acheson, and I am trying to trace my Acheson family roots. I reach a stumbling block right about Charles Acheson, b.?? Ireland & d. 1847 in Tyrone,Ireland. I am descended from his son, William Acheson, who wound up in Schuyler County, Illinois along with his siblings and widowed mother. My specific Acheson ancestry would be William Acheson (1835-1928) - Rollin Acheson (1883-1966) - Wilbur Acheson (1911-1972) - Gene Acheson (living)- Larry Acheson (living). From what I can gather, Charles Acheson's wife was a Sarah Condy. I would love to know any information about their families and lives in Ireland, and also how long this branch was in Ireland as I understand the Achesons ultimately descend from Scotland.

I understand Rollin had an older brother, named William Marvin or Marvin William, who moved to the Los Angeles area. I am curious to know more about living relatives from this branch, as well.

I still think my David Acheson must be related in some way. I have information that he was born in Fermanagh-Sligo or just Ulster. He was born April 1839 and thought to have come over with his family to Canada about 1840. He lived in 1862 in Pembroke Ontario and married Margaret Robinsons. On his marriage record it lists his parents as H.Acheson and Rebecca. Her parents (Margarets) were James Robinson and Marion McKinnon. His first son was named James and one of his sons was a William Harrison Acheson which could be a connection to the surname Harris. David may even have been his middle name although he used David on all documents. In about 1865-67 they moved to Iowa and later his son George lived in North Dakota (emmons County). Any information would be greatly appreciated.Really at a dead end.HELP!
