History Acree Surname

Classification: Query
I am researching my Acree ancestors but am wondering what country they were originally from. If anyone knows the history of the Acree surname, I would greatly appreciate the info. Also, when did they first come to this country? As to the various spellings, were the census takers just confused? I noticed that the VA/NC Acrees spelled the name with two ee's and the PA Acres only used one. I am interested in Lewis and Rhoda Wigginton Acree and John and Polly Kimmon Acree of Rhea Co., TN. Both couples married in the early 1820's and only John was still living by 1850. There are several Acre/Acree orphan children living in Rhea and Bledsoe Counties on the 1850 census. It appears that Lewis, Rhoda and Polly had died by that time.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
