The above message on this topic, dated 9 May 2012, was, for some reason, copied from my family history website. I've fully discussed the Origin of the Acree Surname on the following webpage, associated with the Acree Surname DNA Project:

http://acreetree.net/ydnaorigin.html
Re: History Acree Surname

MEDIEVAL ACREES
We do not know the identities of the first Acrees of our line who arrived in America, much less the identities of ancestors who used some form of our name during the Middle Ages, when surnames first developed. The name is certainly British, but its origin has never been definitively ascertained. Our earliest-known, 18th-century Acree ancestors, living at the time of the American Revolution, spelled their name 'Acre' and regarded themselves as 'Scotch-Irish'. It has been suggested that the name derived in association with the Dacre borderer family, who governed its estates from Naworth Castle in northern Cumbria during the 14th-15th centuries. That family's historic coat of arms, known to heraldry, depicted, on a red background, three silver scallop shells, indicating a pilgrimage to the Holy Land:

Dacre

In Israel there is an ancient seaport called Acre, known in Roman times as Ptolemais and known afterward as Akko or Accho. It was a notorious stronghold for the European Crusaders who invaded Palestine during the 12th and 13th centuries to bring Jerusalem under Christian control. Some who fought there or were born there returned to England with a D'Acre ('of Acre') appellation, notably 'Joanna de Acre', a child of King Edward I and Eleanor of Castile (listed above).

Eleanor was a daughter of King Ferdinand III of Castile and Leon (Spain), an esteemed yet humble Crusader who was eventually canonized 'San Fernando' for his ascetic piety. In 1254 she wed her English prince as 'La Infanta', a girl of ten. Their marriage evolved into one of royalty's greatest love matches. While they both lived, the two were inseparable and were frequently seen playing chess together. In 1270 Eleanor accompanied her warrior husband on his quest to the Holy Land, where his 'gallant one thousand' came to the rescue of besieged Christian forces holding out behind the walls of Acre. Europe, however, was tired of its Crusades and sent meager reinforcements to maintain Edward's victories. The cruel wars were winding down after nearly two hundred years of suffering on both sides, without lasting accomplishment. The significant interchange of cultures that occurred could only be appreciated centuries later.

After a two-year stay, the couple returned to England with Joanna for their renowned joint coronation. Acre finally fell to the Mamlukes in 1291, ending the Crusades. By the time of her death in her late forties, Eleanor had suffered at least sixteen pregnancies but finally produced a surviving male heir to the throne. Imperious Joanna lived to marry twice but did not give birth to any Acrees.

As the above post said, Etta was the eldest child of Joseph Thomas Acree and Mary Elizabeth Blagg, who lived eight miles southwest of Delaplaine - in O'Kean, Randolph Co., Arkansas, at the time of the 1910 census.

I can only trace Joseph's lineage to his parents: Joseph T. (Sr.) and Rhoda G. Acree. Joseph Sr. was born about 1825 in North Carolina and had moved to Randolph Co. from Mississipi, where Rhoda and his older children were born.

Was your William J. Acra the William Jackson Acra (1828-1878) whose first wife was Julia C. Booker?

The earliest known Acra families lived in Gloucester Co., VA. Several men with the given name William were among them. At least one Acra family later changed the spelling of their surname to Acree. A descendant of Jacob and Isabella Acra, who may have been the parents of William Jackson Acra, is a participant in our Acree Surname DNA Project.

Jasper Newton Acree (1839-1911) was an orphan whose father is unknown. According to circumstantial evidence, his mother was Rhoda Wigginton. In 1825 Rhoda married Lewis Acree, believed to be a descendant of Abraham Acree of Caroline Co., Virginia. The couple had several children before Lewis died in the late 1830s, but Jasper evidently wasn't among them. In his pension application and memoir, Jasper affirmed that his father died before he was born. The DNA profile of a descendant of Jasper closely matches the profiles of men having the surnames Lawson and Jenkins, whose patrilineal ancestors lived in the southeast area of Tennessee where Jasper was raised. It's likely that Jssper's father was one of them. Our Acree Surname DNA Project is seeking a second descendant of Jasper to be tested to verify or refute that tentative conclusion.

This was George T. Acree, born in 1868, who lived in Metcalfe Co., Kentucky. He was a son of Jasper Newton Acree (c1839-1911). He mentions that his "Pa", was "very feeble" in this 1910 letter. Jasper was then living with George's sister, Mollie Stephens, whom he mentions. George's deceased mother, Mary Haley Cravens, had died ten years earlier. George's sons (not mentionend) were Otis (recently married), Gerard and James. Sorry, I have no information on George's connection to any Calhoun family.

I meant to refer to your grandfather - Benjamin Walter Acree, Sr. (1891-1980). I see that you've posted a family tree here at Ancestry.com and show him as a son of William Travis Acree. That's supported by the 1900 census, in which his former wife, Clemma, is shown as a divorced mother. William was a son of James E. Acree, whose lineage goes back through William Riley Acree to William Acree, Jr., and finally (to the limits of our knowledge) to William Acree, Sr. (1752 -1833), who was born in Maryland and died in Wayne Co., Kentucky.

I might be able to assist your Acree research if you can tell more about your great-grandfather, Ben W. Acree Sr., and his son, Ben Jr. When did they live in Kentucky and Texas? If you don't know their dates of birth, what years do you estimate for them? What were the names of Ben Sr.'s other children? He probably descended from William Acree (1752-1833) of neighboring Wayne Co., Kentucky. See the Acree website at http://acreetree.net/ydnaacree.html.

I just started to research the Acree name as my maiden name is Acree, daughter of the late Ben W Acree Jr.,of San Antonio TX and Simone A Mette of France, grand-daughter to Ben W Acree Sr and Myrtle or Mirtie Wooldridge of Russell KY.
I am trying to connect with relatives. I know that I had relatives in Ohio as a child visited them but was too young to remember their names. We possibly may be related. How can I find out? I now reside in VA.

The lineage of John R. Acree (1830/TN-1869/AR) is known - back to William Acree (c1710-c1769) of Hanover Co., VA, but that of William Thomas Acree (1853-1932/AR) isn't. In later censuses, he's listed as born in AL, but in 1880, soon after marrying widowed Louisa, his birthplace is shown as KY. He may have been one of the William Acrees born in the mid-1850s who was raised in TN - across the Mississippi River from AR. A DNA test of a male Acree descendant would indicate whether he, too, goes back to William of VA, and thus help to resolve his origins.

Hello...I have been researching my family that connects to these two counties (for the most part...there are other locations to consider as well)

My Grandfather was Lucaion Acree of Green County, KY...

Lucaion Acree's wife was Lula May Richards Acree (her parents were Samuel W. Richards and Van Dora Wooten Richards)

His brothers were Junney Acree, Perry Acree, and William Walter Acree(no children)

His sister was Elvira McMahan (also known as 'Vire')

Lucaion's father was George William Acree and mother was Nannie B. Estes Acree. He also had an uncle Jack Acree and Aunt Etta Acree as well as an uncle John Logan Estes and aunt Eva Ann Sallie Acree Estes

Lucaion's grandparents were Junius C. Acre/Acree and Isabellah Landis Acre/Acree.

I would love to get together, if only through email, with anyone who has connections to these ancestors in order to share photos, stories, and such...

feel free to contact me at willacree@bellsouth.net

ps...Charles, I will be getting in touch with you very soon to participate in the DNA testing...FINALLY got some of the other issues taken care of...got to love this economy!! :-)

Is Vernon D. Acree, Jr. still living? This is odd to find these posts. I was looking for Acree's because Vernon, evidently, knew my grandfather, Walter Leslie Davis. Walter was married to Edith Hanna Prather. Vernon was one of 2 that signed as Witness when my grandfather sent for a copy of his discharge from the USN.
I wasn't even sure Acree was the last name, as it's a little hard to decipher (Vernon Darrell Ac**e is pretty legible), but lo and behold........there was Vernon D. Acree from Capitol Heights, MD!!! That's where my grandfather lived in the 1920-30's until he moved to Florida.

In previous postings, you've told this forum about the Acree foursome who married into your ancestral Morris family in the Orange Co. VA area and moved to northern KY. Their connection to earlier Acrees remains unknown. As you appreciate, a DNA test of one of their male Acree descendants could clarify their origins. It's too bad that the prospect you found didn't wish to consider genetic testing. The weak economy has caused an unfortunate but understandable slowdown in testing this past year.
I do not Descend from an Acree but I do descend from the Morris family from Boone, Ky and formerly from Orange County, Va. The Elizabeth Morris married to James Acree is my GGG-Grandfathers sister. In fact 4 of my Morris's married Acree's. They all married in Orange, Va and later traveled to Boone, Ky
I have some Documentation on the lines and have met a man who claims to be a Descendant of James, his last name is Acree. I have asked him to consider a DNA test because maybe if more is learned about this Acree line it will enable me to find clues into my Morris line. After I asked him about a DNA test he stopped corresponding?

There have been numerous John Acrees in Colonial VA and NC, including two in my own line. I maintain a large off-line file on 18th-20th century Acree families and might be able to help you, as I've helped others, if you'll tell me your specific Acree lineage. You can learn more about Colonial-era Acrees and about the Acree project itself at http://acreetree.net/ydnaacree.html. If your surname is Acree, we'd welcome your participation.

I am extremely interested in the Acree Surname DNA project. I am originally from Louisville, KY, currently residing in Providence, RI. My great-aunt has done some work on our family history and has been able to trace our family to several John Acrees in the VA and NC area. I'd be interested to know if these are the same John Acrees that you speak of.
