Re: Lillian Acuff, Coffeyville, KS about 1919

I have not been able to confirm a marriage between Lillian Acuff and Elmer Deer. Lillian Acuff is listed as single in the 1920 census, when she was listed with her parents in Mayes County, Oklahoma (and only 16). The Social Security Death Index says she was born on 1 February 1903. Possibly this early marriage was annulled, but I have no evidence either way. Do you have a copy of the marriage record?
There is a 1906 marriage record for Elmer Deer at
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-159394-414407-19?...
Elmer L. Deer (21) m. Ora Coker [possibly Coke or Cokes] (18). Both were from Nowata, and they were married on 11 July 1906 in Craig County, Oklahoma.
I would be glad to hear from anyone with more information.
Laura Perry for Acuff.org
...

I am a researcher for Acuff.org. Our records indicate that Charles Van Acuff was the son of Hyram Austin ACUFF and Sarah A. Elizabeth COLLINS. Before he married Inez RILEY, he married Miss Lucille BRUAN on 8 February 1936. We do not know whether that marriage ended in divorce or death. You can find out more about him by going to Acuff.org and registering. (Registration and searching are free.) Then click on People at the top of the page and choose Family Trees. (You will not see this option until you have registered.) If you have information you'd like to share, or other questions, you can write to me at keyesperry [at] gmail.com
-- Laura Perry

John Benjamin Acuff and Pinkney Burgess Acuff were half-brothers. You can find out a lot more about both of them at http://acuff.org/
You have to sign in to see the Family Tree, but that is only a way to keep out hackers and spammers. It is free.
Now, does anyone know Georgia's maiden name?
Who was Patrolman Acuff of Fort Worth, Texas (1915)?

Genealogy Bank has digital images of 8 articles from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that mention Patrolman Acuff. Not one gives his first name. Can anyone tell me who this man was? He probably was relatively young in 1915-1916.
An article titled "Girl, 16, So Poor She Wants to Die, Stopped by Officer" appeared in the Star-Telegram of 27 May 1915. "Because her aunt was too poor to take care of her, a 16-year-old girl decided to end her life Wednesday. Patrolman Acuff intercepted her before she reached the drug store to purchase poison." The Travelers' Aid Society bought her a train ticket to go back to her parents in a nearby town. The article notes that she was the third female to attempt suicide in the city in 3 days.
On 7 July 1915, an article appeared titled "Woman 'Cussed' Police; Judge, Too, So He Fines Her." It says that Etta Robinson "said mean things about the police" when Patrolman Acuff arrested her. "Acuff testified the woman 'cussed us all out,' and the woman did not deny it…." She cussed Judge Shropshire of the Police Court, too, and he fined her $10 with the stated purpose of teaching her respect.
An article on 4 August 1915 reported that Policemen Acuff, Barton, and Chapman had found a woman sitting on the sidewalk early Monday night. She and her two "pretty blond-haired children," who had traveled to the city from Waco, stayed in the women's ward at police headquarters over night, then were put on a train to their destination, Strawn, Texas.
An article on 13 August 1915 is summarized in its title, "Man Flirts with Woman in Theater; Lectured by Police." Patrolman Acuff was called to arrest a Cleburne man who had passed a note to a stranger at a moving picture show. It said, "May I see you after the show?" The man was lectured by Commissioner Hurdleston and released.
An article dated 6 January 1916 says, "A sewing machine, left alone and unprotected in front of M. R. Duncan's store, 206 Houston street, was rescued Wednesday night by Patrolman Acuff. It is held awaiting an owner."
An article called "Players Flee to Roof When Game Raided" appeared in the Star-Telegram on 14 June 1916. Patrolman Acuff helped Night Captain Cooper in arresting 7 men charged with gambling after a raid on a rooming house in Fort Worth. Some were able to escape over the roof of the house, but the ones who hid in closets or under beds or pretended to be asleep were arrested.
An article from 26 August 1916 is headed "Tom is Slain as Three Policemen Answer Rush Call." It says that Policeman Grisso, Patrolman Acuff, and Bicycle Officer DeWitt answered an emergency call about a mad cat. Grisso killed the cat by hitting it with a brick.
These articles all attempt to be funny. Two days later, on 28 August 1916, another article about a rabid animal was titled "Panic of Dog Race Exciting." It stated that Patrolman George Gresham "broke local police records for sprinting Sunday when he ran seventeen blocks after a mad dog." According to the article, the dog had just bitten 6 people. Patrolman Acuff attempted to assist Gresham, but he couldn't catch the dog, even when it ran directly between his legs. Finally, a bystander hit the dog with a rock, and Gresham "ended the long chase with a bullet."
Margaret Gilkeson (Acuff) Thomas - obituary 1918 PA

The Ambler Gazette
Ambler, Pennsylvania
14 February 1918 (page 4, column 3)
Mrs. Thomas Laid at Rest.
One of Very Oldest Members of St. Thomas' Church.
Forebears of Deceased Actively and Prominently Identified With Early History of This Country -- Sketch of the Deceased -- Her Ancestors.
On Monday afternoon in St. Thomas' cemetery, Whitemarsh, were interred the remains of the late Margaret Gilkeson, wife of David Thomas, of near Camp Hill. The funeral was conducted from the residence of her son, J. Harry Thomas, of Lindenwold avenue and borough line, Ambler, and services were held in St. Thomas' church.
Death resulted, on Thursday, at the Episcopal hospital, Philadelphia, after a short illness from blood poisoning. According to their custom, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas were spending the winter in Philadelphia, having closed their Camp Hill home.
The deceased was born March 3, 1849, being a daughter of the late William and Eliza Acuff, who at that time owned and occupied the house on the southwest corner of Mattison avenue and North street, Ambler, now owned by Leonard S. Davis. She had three brothers, of whom Alfred and James reached maturity. The holdings of William and Eliza Acuff at that time included nearly all of the present eastern section of the borough, including likewise the present property of J. Harry Thomas, son of the deceased.
Opposite this property and across the old Springhouse and Chestnut Hill turnpike was the long, two-story, stone colonial building occupied by Isaac and Tacy Lukens Thomas, whose son, David Thomas, selected as his playmate and afterwards wedded, in January, 1860, the daughter of his neighbor. The building, above mentioned, long served as the Upper Dublin post-office and general store, and was years afterward absorbed in the holdings of Dr. R. V. Mattison, and the real estate now constitutes a part of the lawn of Lindenwold. The building was razed 25 or more years ago.
The Thomas and Lukens families were long time residents of Horsham township and actively identified with its early history.
Mr. Thomas for about four years after his marriage conducted the Fitzwatertown store, and then, removing to Philadelphia, engaged in the wholesale dry goods business on Third street near Race, 25 years ago he retired from active business and removed to the Camp Hill property, which occupies a part of the original holdings of the Scheetz family of colonial times, ancestors of Mrs. Thomas.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas had two sons: William A., deceased, and J. Harry Thomas, both identified with Ambler for many years. The deceased was a life-long member of St. Thomas' church, being at her death one of the very oldest communicants, and her fealty to that religious organization is further intensified by the fact that her forbears, in the early history of the colonies, were actively identified with the organization and maintenance of that faith at Whitemarsh.
The ancestors of the deceased are most prominently mentioned in early historical records in connection with the settlement of this country. The great-great-grandmother of Mrs. Thomas was a Hocker, which family, back in colonial times, possessed the Erdenheim farm, on the site of which the present Carson college is being erected. The present Camp Hill estate of the VanRennsalears formerly was possessed by the Scheetz family and Mrs. Thomas' great-grandfather was General Scheetz.
The Scheetz family was early identified with the history of Whitemarsh township, several members of that name having been noted business men of the county. John Jacob Scheetz, a minister of Creyfelt, on the Rhine, was a member of the Frankfort company, organized in 1683 to promote and encourage migration from Germany to this country. His son Henry was thus induced to come to Pennsylvania, and first settled in Germantown [and] afterwards removed to a property which he purchased in Whitemarsh township, where he spent the remainder of his days. This property was then inherited by his son, Henry Scheetz, who, in the assessment of 1780, is called a "paper maker," and rated as owning a paper mill and 80 acres of land. This mill he built in 1769 on Sandy Run, to which he afterwards added a grist mill, which is still standing. It is said he also erected, at a later date, the paper mill on the same stream, a short distance over the Springfield line, which up until the '80's was still in possession of the family. He was appointed a justice of the peace before the Revolution, and on the formation of Montgomery county was commissioned, Dec. 10, 1784, one of the justices of the courts of quarter sessions and common pleas. He died about 1794 leaving two sons, Henry and Justus. The latter was elected sheriff of the county, serving in that office from 1816 to 1819.
General Henry Scheetz, great-grandfather of the deceased Mrs. Thomas, son of the aforesaid Henry and Catherine Scheetz, was born in the homestead along the Sandy Run, in Whitemarsh township, in 1761. His education was received in the schools of the neighborhood. During the rebellion of John Fries, in 1798, the command of a country brigade was assigned him. In 1805 he was elected a member of the assembly, and in 1808 was one of the directors of the new poor house. In 1811 he was appointed by Governor Snyder a major-general of the Second division of the Pennsylvania militia. After the breaking out of the war with England he marched with his company to Marcus Hook for the protection of Dupont's powder works at Wilmington. After the unsuccessful raid attempt of British General Ross on Baltimore the militia were recalled and discharged. In 1817 General Scheetz was elected one of the members from Montgomery county to frame a new constitution for the state, which duties he faithfully and creditably performed. He then retired to his home in Valley Green and died Sept. 4, 1848, at the advanced age of 87 years. He left nine children. His descendants are numerous, bearing the names of Scheetz, Hitner, Sechler, Wentz and Acuff.
William Acuff, father of the deceased Mrs. Thomas, was a son of David Acuff, who was the son of Jacob Acuff. Both the latter and his son David were soldiers in the Revolutionary war. David Acuff later conducted the hotel at Gwynedd for many years, and prior to that time he kept the Springhouse hotel, besides many activities in this section of the county. William Acuff removed from the house in Ambler, now owned by Leonard Davis, about 1856 and erected the house at Camp Hill, which was occupied for many years by Mr. and Mrs. David Thomas.
[transcribed by Laura Keyes Perry]
Bennie ACUFF m. George KAPARIS 1915 MO

Bennie ACUFF and George KAPARIS were married in Kansas City, Missouri, on 23 December 1915. Bennie was 36. George was 26. Mrs. J. T. ATKINS swore that Bennie, who was personally known to her, "is the age of eighteen years and may legally contract said marriage."
I THINK that Bennie was the ex-wife of John E. ACUFF. But I have not found any record of their divorce.
I cannot find ANY record of Bennie after she married George.
George may have immigrated from Greece in 1912 (the age does not match exactly) and may have died in Miami, Florida, in 1985. I have not been able to find an obituary that lists his family.
Can anyone -- perhaps a KAPARIS descendant -- help me with this family?

Bill for divorce, John C. Mason vs. Laura R. Mason, Grainger Co., Tennessee, 1895

The original of the following partially transcribed document was found in the 1895 Chancery Court case, John C. Mason vs. Laura R. Clark Mason, held by the Grainger County Archives in Rutledge, Tennessee:

Original Bill for Divorce

To the Hon. H. G. Kyle, Chancellor &c., holding the Chancery Court for the district composed of the County of Grainger.
The Bill of Complaint of John C. Mason, a citizen of Grainger County Tennessee
Filed against
Laura R. Mason who is a non resident of the State of Tennessee, and whose place of residence is unknown but believed to be in Indian Territory.
Humbly complaining, Your Orator shows Your Honor that he and the defendant Laura R. Mason were married in Grainger County Tenn. in the month of Oct. 1878, and have resided in said county and in Jefferson County Tennessee ever since.
For several years after their said marriage they lived together happily, and so far as Your Orator could see, his said wife seemed disposed to perform all the duties of a loving and dutiful wife, . . .
Several years ago the deft. began to treat Your Orator coolly, and to complain and find fault with him for various things, without any just cause, and this was carried to such an extent as to cause Your Orator to suspect that she had, in large measure, lost her affection for him. . . .
Your Orator owns a small farm in Jefferson County, and concluded to move from Grainger County . . . to his said farm in Jefferson County, and about the last of March 1895, he left deft. at his home in Grainger County and went to Jefferson County to prepare for changing his residence; . . . and she was to follow in a few days . . . Your Orator waited for her about ten days, and then returned to Grainger County to move her and the remainder of his goods to Jefferson County, when on reaching his home he was astonished to learn that his wife had left about two days after he left, saying that she was going to him in Jefferson County. He is informed that she took the train at Rutledge and went to Morristown where she took passage on the Rail Road, but he has heard nothing directly nor indirectly from her since, except a rumor that she is in the west.
Since their said marriage deft. has born seven children three of whom died in infancy and the others are still living and their names and ages are as follows: Charles, aged 13 years; William B. aged 5 years; Clyde aged 3 years and Pearl aged one year.
Charles and Wm. B. were with Your Orator in Jefferson County when deft. left, and he still has them with him, but the other two viz Clyde and Pearl were taken away by her and are supposed to be still in her custody.
From the foregoing circumstances and from information and belief Your Orator charges that defendant has been guilty of Adultery with the said F. H. Acuff, and that she has willfully abandoned Your Orator and eloped with said Acuff, or gone to him in a distant state, never to return. . . .
The premises considered Your Orator prays . . .
That upon the hearing Your Honor pronounce a decree dissolving the bonds of matrimony now subsisting between him and the deft. . . and awarding to him the custody and care of three of said children, to wit: Charles, Wm. B., and Pearl, but for reasons not necessary to be here stated he does not ask for the custody of Clyde, but prays that the deft. be allowed to retain him. And if Your Honor should be of opinion that the infant child Pearl is of such tender age that it should not now be taken from its mother, he prays for a decree awarding him the care custody and control of said child after it arrives at the age of two years, or such age as your Honor may deem proper. . . .
Allen S. Tate
Sol. for Complt.

State of Tennessee}
County of Grainger}
Personally came before me, J. M. Grove C&M &c., John C. Mason and made oath in due form of law that the facts stated in the foregoing Bill are true according to the best of his knowledge information and belief.
That this Bill is not filed out of levity or by collusion with the defendant, but in sincerity and truth for the causes stated in the Bill.
J. C. Mason
Sworn to and subscribed before me July 29th 1895.
J. M. Grove
C&M
Acuff/Achuff in Philadelphia area

The AMBLER GAZETTE, a newspaper published in Montgomery County, sometimes included news about people in Philadelphia. It's worth doing a search of the online images at
http://www.accesspadr.org:2005/cdm4/search.php?CISOROOT=all
for Acuff, Achuff, and any other family names you have.

The images highlight the search term, so you don't have to search the entire page. An excellent free resource from Access Pennsylvania.

Hello Roy,
I had read your message and was wondering if the spelling
for your Mary was Satterfild or Satterfield ? In our family line
the story goes Alice Satterfiled's sister married Roy Acuff , this I have not found to be true. So I thought maybe she married a sibling of Roy. My gg-grandma was Alice Satterfiled
she was born in Grainger Co,TN,15 Apr 1873 , she has two sisters and one brother named Walter. If you have any infromation that would help I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks, Gina Freel

Dora "Williams" Acuff

Looking for information on Dora "Williams" Acuff. She and her husband, Charles Mitchell Acuff, both lived in Wichita in the early 1900s. I've estimated that Dora died sometime between 1910 and 1920 as Charles says he was a widower in the 1920 census. Need information on when Dora passed away and where she is buried. She had two children: Robert Vaughn Acuff and Vera "Acuff" Reeve (husband: Paul Thomas Reeve). The family did move to Arizona sometime in the 1920s. Appreciate any help.
