Anyone linked to this man, born in Co. Tyrone, Ulster but family from Londonderry, NI, who emigrated to US, possibly Chicago where he worked for the US postal service? He married a US citizen and had one son. They all came to live in England and must have been there during WW2 where Billy died of probably a heart attack and after the war, his wife and child returned to the US. He was my great uncle.
CB

These may have been built in an apparently outside courtyard wall enclosure shown in the painting by Frances Scott (in the Tate Gallery ?).
Were there about 4 top rooms in the south wing over the 1st floor hall on the S.E. and over the other S.W. room (next to the hall)?
The cooking may have been done in the large fire-place in the "hall", and taken in to the adjoining northern "gallery" room for banquets ?
Mitchell S. Adair was my 3rd great-grandfather. He married Rebecca Walker in 1831 in Carroll County, GA. He is buried in the Lane Cemetery in Paulding County, GA. I cannot find her buried anywhere in Paulding County (unless it is an unmarked grave). She may be buried in Carroll County, GA. Have not checked that out yet. They had 9 known children:
1)Bozeman (named after his father) 2)Jonathan W. 3) William
"Bill" 4)Joseph 5) George B. 6) Sarah Ann (she married John W. Hollis) 7) James 8) Mary (she married Charlie C.
Gamel) and 9) Thomas. Their son William "Bill" was my great-great-grandfather and he married Margaret M. Hollis.
Their son, Robert Hutcheson Adair was my great-grandfather and he married Mary Jane Parsons. Their daughter, Minnie Bell Adair was my grandmother and she married Radford Fulton Sinyard. I have information on Mitchell's children
(spouses, children, etc.) except for Joseph, George B. and Thomas. If I can be of any help on the others please feel
free to let me know. Mitchell S. Adair was the first tax assessor of Paulding County, GA.

He had been infeft in half of one merkland of Killumquha and in 1½ merkland of Killumquha-Agnew, nevertheless Janet Agnew and Walter Agnew pretended possessors of the 2½ merkland of Killumquha-Agnew held of the said John McDowell, and Alexander Agnew, their subtenant, had been working the ½ merkland as well as the 2½ merkland, and would not suffer the said John McDowell's superiority over the said ½ merkland, so that he cannot work it. Therefore it is necessary that the ½ merkland be divided from the 2½ merkland and the sheriff should decide the division.
I have started a search for information about my Buck family ancestry. I have never known who my Great Grandfather Buck was until last night, [June 30th 2002]. I talked to someone in Decatur, NE. I was told that his name was William and that his wife was Margaret Adair! I was wondering if you might have anymore information on his family or her family. I am so happy to find these names after all these years!!! lorzbts@yahoo.com

Adairs of southeast Saskathewan

A large family of Adairs lived, and I believe several members still live, in the vicinity of Maryfield Saskatchewan. They descend from John and Eliza Adair who came to Ontario from Antrim Ireland. Their son Robert, known as Robin (1831-1914) brought his family to Sask in the 1890s. Their children (adults when they arrived) were Eliza, William, John, Hester, Thomas, Clarissa, Ruth, James and Sara. Reply to this message for more information.

They had a son who was born in cumbria in 1873,Samuel adair.

But the next census shows samuel living with his mother and father in law (Taylor) 1891 in cumbria.

I have found out that William Adair and MArgaret may have moved to canada but i cannot find any passenger lists or information......

Does anyone know if this is true and if samuel did go with them??????

Anything you know would be really appreciated!

Was interested in this information. I am a GGG Grandson of James AUSTIN and Hannah GREENAWAY of Co Armagh.
Their son, William AUSTIN, obviously was my GG Grandfather. He had a brother Samuel AUSTIN both of whom emigrated to Wanganui, New Zealand. There is quite a lot of information available about them.
My information goes only back to James ADAIR and Mary Riley and the AUSTIN/GREENAWAY family.

I would be interested in more information about all of the people mentioned. And if there is a relationship as posed.
Thanks
Lewis McGill, Wellington New Zealand

This passage is from PIONEERS OF THE OLD SOUTHWEST, A CHRONICLE OF THE DARK AND BLOODY GROUND, by Constance Lindsay Skinner, Volume 18 In The Chronicles Of America Series. According to Wikipedia, "Chronicles of America is the title of a fifty volume series on American history. Originally printed in 1921, the volumes were written by historians of the time about various aspects of American History. The series was edited by Allen Johnson. Since the copyright has expired, some of the volumes are freely available in electronic form. "

This particular volume is available online at Project Gutenberg (trying to avoid the forbidden urls here :-) It's easy to find with a search.) The passage is from Chapter three - The Trader. There's a long piece about Adair.

Here is what Adair says in his book about baby boys and panther skins (p. 420):

"Their male children they chuse to raise on the skins of panthers, on account of the communicative principle, which they reckon all nature is possest of, in conveying qualities according to the regimen that is followed: and, as the panther is endued with many qualities, beyond any of his fellow animals in the American woods, as smelling, strength, cunning and a prodigious spring, they reckon such a bed is the first rudiments of war. But it is worthy of notice, they change the regimen in nurturing their young females; these they lay on the skins of fawns, or buffalo calves, because they are shy and timorous: and, if the mother be indisposed by sickness, her nearest female relation suckles the child, but only till she recovers."

I think Constance Skinner was romanticizing what we all assume happened, but which we may never be able to prove.
Residence Laredo (which doesn't necessarily mean he is from there. He appears on a "Roll of Prisoners of War with Benavides who surrendered at New Orleans, LA, by Gen E.K. Smity, C.S.A., to Maj. Gen. E.R.S. Canby, U.S.A.. May 26, 1865 and paroled at (date and place not stated. Roll not dated"
His father is listed as David F. (or A. depending on where you look) who was in 2nd Co.
Re: James Adair, author and trader

James Robert Adair b. ca 1709, County Antrim, Ireland, of Scotch ancestry settled in Chester County, Pennsylvania around 1730
with his father and his two brothers, Joseph and William.
Moved to Charleston, South Carolina and established
a successful trading partnership with George Galphin in
1735. Over the course of his career he traded with the
Catawba, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw and other
southeast American Indians. m. Clark Hobson 29 July 1740, St. Stephens Parish,
Northumberland Co., Virginia, Settled in “Fairfields,”
(present-day Greene Co., North Carolina) and later
“Patcherly” in Bladen (now Robeson) Co), North
Carolina. Believed to be the same James Adair who
wrote The History of the American Indians published
in London in 1775
d. 1779, buried near Rowland, North Carolina

James and Clark had three daughters: Saraann (b. 20 October 1743); Elizabeth (b. 23 January 1745), in Northumberland Co., Virginia, and Agnes, apparently born in North Carolina ca 1750-51 as her name does not appear in the birth records of St. Stephens Parish, Northumberland County.
Clark d. before 1763 , buried at “Fairfields,” present-day Greene Co., North Carolina
Saraann married William McTyre and there are supporting
deeds researched by one of theor descendants. If you send me your e-mail address I can amplify this information.
James had no male children of whom I am aware. His younger brother William had a son John, a general the War of 1812
under Andrew Jackson and who became the eighth governor of
Kentucky. I would be interested in your sources for the
information you cited. James, the plantation owner and
author could not have had a child born 1755 in County
Antrim as he was in the southeastern United States at the
time, although he did return to Ireland just at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War in connection with the publication of his "History of the American Indians."
Philip Sonnichsen
Sacramento, California
cpsonnichsen@gmail.com

Re: Children of Whitmill Harrington Adair

Until about 8 years ago I had no reason to doubt my Jane's connection to the Whitmill Harrington Adair family. The doubts began when I ran across an old photograph in my late father's possessions. It was a formal photo taken of five young people -- James Adair and some others whose names I can't recall -- plus two young Brooks girls. (Not being at home right now, I don't have access to the photo.) I put out a query asking if anyone knew who these people were, and the result was contact with a lady whose grandfather was one of those young people. Furthermore, she had a Bible record that read, "Father's sister, Jane Adair Brooks."

My Jane Adair Brooks who was the supposed daughter of Whitmill was supposed to have been born in Georgia. Yet,nearly all her children report her birthplace as "Mississippi" in the censuses from 1880 onward. Furthermore, the names given to her children do not seem to be names common in Whitmill's family. I have too much information to share with you than what can be put in this message.

You mention Wills and Estates in Paulding County: Do you know if Jane Adair Brooks is specifically mentioned in Whitmill's estate records? I know she is identified as his daughter in some family records. I know she and John were married in Paulding County. But I have never seen a primary record (will, estate, etc.) showing the connection.

As for children of Jane and John, they had a large family. Not having my records with me I am not sure I have all their names from memory, but off the top of my head they were (not necessarily in order): James Madison Brooks, Andrew Allen Brooks, Thomas Alonzo Brooks, Mary Ellen Brooks, Henrietta Ann Brooks (not Harriet), Delaney Elizabeth Brooks, John Milton Brooks, William Albert Brooks, Sarah Frances "Fanny" Brooks, and Magdalen Cynthia Brooks. James Madison and Henrietta Ann and possibly Mary Ellen were born in Georgia, I believe. Andrew Allen Brooks was born in Mississippi. The rest were all born in Texas.

If you would like to share more information, e-mail me at sndshire@sbcglobal.net sometime after August 1, when I'll be home again and have access to my records.

Nancy

Erica, I hope you check for answer as I have tried to get in touch with you before. You had replied to a post I had on Adair family but I had changed my email and when I replied to you, you had changed your email. Anyway I have information on Geo. Washington ADAIR and siblings. I have never been able to locate Arizonia on any records other than census, but my mother and aunt used to talk about Aunt Arizonia and her brother John M. So hope you get this.

Lynn Nelson

He did have children. His son did poorly when there father left the USA. The sons are buried downtown Boston, MA (USA).
