Reply to Message #13 - Hubert Adami

Hubert Adami was my great-grandfather, and the runaway horse story has been confirmed through contemporary newspaper articles. He was born in Woodford County, Ill.,1856, the son of Hubert Adami and Elizabeth Keshler (sometimes referred to as Kessler). [To avoid confusion, I refer to the Huberts as Hubert I and Hubert II.] Hubert II died in Streator, Ill. in 1906, of his injuries. He is buried in an obscure Catholic cemetery outside of Washburn, Ill. His wife, Magdalena (Lena) Schneider Adami (1880-1940) is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Metamora, Ill., as are Hubert I and Elizabeth. Elizabeth had 2 sons by a first marriage and 4 sons by Hubert I. Hubert II and Lena had 2 boys and 2 girls. I would like to know through what line you are related to Hubert II. Would also be willing to exchange information.

Victor Adami -- Randolph Co., Ill./Webster Groves, Mo.

Seeking information, esp. burial location, about Victor J. Adami, who operated the Hotel Elliott (also known as the Adami Hotel)in Coulterville (Randolph Co.), Ill. beginning in the 1870s. His father was Michael Adami and his mother was Catherine Boni. Michael Adami operated a hotel in St. Louis in the mid to late 1860s before moving to Coulterville approx. 1871. Victor J. had a son, Victor H., and a daughter, Blanche. Victor J's father, Michael Adami, had a brother named Hubert (d. 1891) who lived in Woodford County, Ill. (near Washburn and Metamora; I am a descendant of Hubert, who is buried in Metamora and who also has a brother named Victor who is buried in the same cemetery). I believe some of the above Adamis are buried in the St. Louis area, and would like to find them. Any other information, esp. about descendants, and where they are now located, would also be appreciated.

None of your names ring a bell but I will check my records.Thank you for offering to keep in touch. I think these Adamis have to be related. My gr-gr grandfather, Hubert Adami (who lived in Woodford Co., Illinois, near Peoria), had a brother, Michael Adami, who ran a hotel in St. Louis. The first StL city directory in which I find Michael was 1859. He also lived there during the Civil War. Michael moved to Randolph Co., Illinois, near Coulterville, around 1871 and ran a hotel/spa referred in different sources as the Hotel Elliott and/or the Hotel Adami. Will follow up.

Thank you for your response. My research materials are in storage and not immediately available; however, I obtained my information from the public library in Chester on a visit there many years ago. I believe they have a small genealogy room and the librarians are very helpful.

I believe there is an entry for the Hotel Adami (also apparently known as the Hotel Elliott) in one of the county histories or business directories, perhaps under the hotel name or under one of the Adami names.

Some of the Adamis are buried in Coulterville; others are buried in Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis. I believe that cemetery has a website and you can search for names.

In the meantime, when I am able to access my archives I will take a look, although this may not occur in enough time to assist you with your report. If your research extends this far, I would be interested in knowing whether the hotel building or any building associated with it still stands, and what kind of features it had (e.g., lakes, sports facilities, etc.).

Why did you choose this topic?

Regards,

JGerber

My Great Grandfather was Frederick Adame. He was born in Essen, Germany and Married Theodora Voss there. They emmiigrated to Minoonk, Illinois in 1888. My understanding is the original spelling of Adame was Adami. I am not sure when the change was made. Frederick had many brothers and sisters that he left behind in Germany. I do not have any of their names. He apparently lost touch with them after coming to the U.S. Ironically, I also have Jasper County connections through my husband's family.

Don: Just found your query. I think we have the same great grandparents. My grandmother Florence Vernia Bullen Armstrong had a brother, Ross and Guy and sisters Martha, Nellie, Maude, and Bessie, that I know of. They were, I think, all born in Cataract, WI, according to my aunt and mother. Their parents were Samuel Truman Bullen (who fought in the Civil War), and Sara Maria/Marie King. Their graves are in Cataract, WI. I have pictures of. In my notes I have a Katherine married to Ross. No further info. If this is right, we would be 2nd cousins. Please contact me and see if we are on the right track. Lois Pempsell

They lived in St. Louis, MO. Their children were: Louisa, William and Kate.
I have some information from the St. Louis, Mo. city directory if you need it.
