Looking for information on my grandmother's father, William Adamson.

My grandmother was Dora Elizabeth Adamson Kitterman born near
Bay, on 02 Aug 1877. William Adamson was born abt. 1855 according to the Census record of Maumelle District of Craighead County AR of 1880 and born in Missouri. According to
my mother, Opal Kitterman Jordan, William was killed by bushwackers sometime before my great grandmother, Alsary Jacobs Adamson, married for the second time to Jacob Davis on 30 Sep 1885.

Obit. Mrs Harriet Adamson died 5 Aug 1871

I have an obit that I cannot place.

MRS. HARRIET ADAMSON
August 9, 1871 Waynesburg Republican
Sudden Death - Mrs. Harriet Adamson, widow, of Jas. damson, of Morgan township, died quite suddenly Saturday evening, the 5th inst. She was taken sick while out milking, and died in about two hours. She was a very devoted member of the Baptist church.

I do have a record of a James Adamson, son of Charles Adamson and Sarah Hatfield, born 27 May 1843, who died 29 Feb 1868 in Franklin Township. I thought that he was married to a Margaret Catheine Lantz, but not certain.
This is the only James Adamson I have that could fit the obit description. Any help on identity of this Harriet or clarification of Jamesis appreciated.

John Adamson and Ann Skew Not Skute

I have completed extensive research on the subject of Swedish Colony of New Sweden in America of the mid 1600’s and early 1700’s. I did this search in trying to confirm the existence of Ann Skute.

I conclude that the Skute Family and the settlement of New Sweden is well documented and available on the internet. The 1698 listing of membership of the Gloria Dei Church by Pastor Andreas Rudman shows Johan Skute and wife Armegott, with children Swan and Christna. The listing shows that Johan Skute did not have a daughter of an age named Ann or Anna that could have been the wife of John Adamson. It is a myth that an Ann Skute married John Adamson. Quakers records of the Newton Monthly Meeting refer to an Ann Skew as being the wife of John Adamson and her parentage has not been determined.

I have created a web page on this subject and can be found at http://www.AdamsonAncestry.com . This page reflects my findings and lists several suggested internet Links and searches that would be useful in your viewing. The Ann Skute link can be found on the right column of the web page.
I do know that they were accidently killed at the Eccles mine, West Virginia, USA in 1910 but I have no information on how they were killed.

They were interred at Wildwood Cemetery, Beckley, Raleigh, WV, on 10th September 1910.

They were only 24 and 22 years respectively but I have been unable to obtain a death certificate for either of these
two men.

Grateful thanks to anyone who can help further.

Elizabeth

Eleanor Adamson (born Tennessee, died Nebraska??)

Looking for the parents of Eleanor Adamson who was married to John Tharp (born about 1812 in Ohio). She was born between 1802-1806 in Tennessee. I am guessing they were married in Ohio, Tennessee or Indiana.

Their children are:
Hester E Tharp (born Indiana)
Robert Nevall Tharp (born Indiana)
Mary E Tharp (born Indiana)
Eliza Tharp (born Indiana)
Louisa Jane Tharp (born Indiana)
Martha Ann Tharp (born Missouri about 1844)

They arrived in Jasper Co, Iowa about 1846 and are found on the census records in this county in 1850, 1854, and 1856. I can't find them anywhere in 1860 but in 1870 they are living in Page Co, Iowa. Then in 1880 they are in Nemaha, Nemaha Co, Nebraska.

My husband is a descendant of Martha Tharp. Most of her married life she seemed to stay in the vacinity of Atchinson, Kansas, Southeast Nebraska or Northwest Missouri. But she lived with her children in her later years. Most of her children ended up in Coffeyville Kansas, Nowata Co Oklahoma, and St Joseph Missouri.

I see that there were other Adamsons in Japser Co, Iowa. I am wondering if they are siblings/nephews. These names came from the 1849 and 1850 Tax List for the county:
ADAMSON, Evan
ADAMSON, Abraham
ADAMSON, Lewis
ADAMSON, Thomas J.
ADAMSON, Henry
ADAMSON, Benjamin
ADAMSON, Ira
Found these names at http://iagenweb.org/jasper/resources/polltax1849.htm

Thanks so much,
TM Wells

I have seen Sarah Ellen and Perry Hagerty in South Dakota around 1884 to 1897. I believe my GG Grandfather, James Wesley Adamson, was her brother. He was born in 1852. James Wesley traveled with Sarah and Eli, the last time I found them together was in South Dakota. James Wesley then came to Washington State and I have not been able to find Sarah or Eli after S. Dakota. I am trying to find out what happenned to Sarah and James' mother Rachael. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Teresa Adamson

Hello, John.

I have read with interest your findings on the Blake line. My greatx4 grandmother was Susannah Blake, born probably in the Mitcham area, circa 1743.

However, I have been unable to find her parents but see that you and Gwen have been looking at the Blakes from Mitcham/Southwark area. Is it possible that my Susannah Blake's parents were Malachi Blake and Susannah Blunkett?

If it is of interest my Susannah Blake married Richard Arthur, born 1743 in Mitcham. The Arthurs owned a large lavender and herb business which I have been told was in the Mitcham area covering 3000+ acres. There are a lot of Arthurs married/buried, etc in St Peter's & St Pauls church in Mitcham.

In additon James Arthur, the son of Richard and Susannah, married Mary Annn (surname unknown), believed to be a gypsy queen.

Please let me have your thoughts on this.

Kind regards,
Andy

Thanks for all the information, John. No, I had not come across the posting on the Arthurs from Scotland. I had hit a blank with Richard Arthur's parents and could find no trace, so it is interesting to think the link goes back to Scotland.

The lavender business was one of the largest in the country and a number of generations worked there before, I believe, it closed.

In answer to your previous message, I have Richard Arthur and Susannah Blake with at least 11 children, James being the youngest married to Mary Ann - they in turn had 10 children. If you would like any further information on this line, please let me know.

Kind regards,
Andy

Hi, This will stop you in your tracks!!! Have you seen this posting?

Posted by: John Arthur Date: March 31, 2001 at 13:29:50
In Reply to: SIR GEORGE ARTHUR Brit. Colonial Gov. by Pamela Mondt of 1926

I stayed a few years ago at Elie Castle in Fife, and saw the title deeds. Elie is in very good agricultural land on the north shore of the Firth of Forth. As I remember it, about 1770 William Arthur sold the castle to the Scott-Montcrieffs. I was told that this was probably becaue the Arthur's had backed the wtong side in the '45 uprising!

Anyway the Arthurs moved out far and wide. I was told by my grandfather that his grandfather had come down from Scotland and set up a lavender business in Mitcham Surrey, and done very well. One of his brothers had started fruitfarming at Evesham and done well too.

There was a Col. Arthur who became Governor of the new colony of Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania) about 1790. I was approached recently by a charming coal-black elderly lady who wondered if we might be related. One of her forbears came to the Barbadoes from Scotland.

So maybe there is a link between Sir George and Elie

To much of a coincidence to me!!!!

Dear Andy,

I think your line goes like this:-

Yes Malachi Blake and Susannah Blunkett did indeed have a daughter named Susannah circa 1745 in Mitcham. She married Richard Arthur (born 1741 Mitcham) 20 November 1766. They had at least 2 children Richard Christened 20/11/1785 Mitcham and James Arthur (Arter) Christened 13/3/1791 Mitcham. James I believe married Mary Ann Sayers born circa 1790 in Mitcham on 17/11/1811 (father John). Mary is on the 1861 Census as a widow running a farm growing herbal remedies - James died in 1857. You will note their were many sayers living in Mitcham during the same period
dear Carolyn
It was great to hear from you. I'm not sure if our families know each other. sadly my father died in 1990 but some of the Adamson clan still live in and around cullercoats, though I live up near the Scottish border.

elizabeth Adamson is proving a bit tricky. she gives the maiden name selby on selbys birth cert in 1842, however she gave birth to a son Samuel in 1839 and names a Samuel Adamson as the father and gives her maiden name as nixon! on the 1841 census she lives in Tynemouth with her children and an Ann Selby and a Elizabeth Nixon both lodgers could they be linked in some way?

have you found anything about selby's father william? these men seem difficult to find on the census, probably at sea most of the time.
as you said William Trotter Adamson was my great grandfather he married Isabella Storey (a great fishing family in Cullercoats) they had Mary Logan, Selby (my grandfather) Barbara Ann and william. my grandfather Selby married Mary Ann hedley and they had Hedley, Mildred, Hilda, Selby (my father), Tom and Ken each of these married and all had several children but only two boys to carry on the family name. Gary, kens son who is not married and my brother Nigel who has two girls and a son Lewis. only my uncle Ken is left from the original adamson family and I must meet up with him soon to try and fill in some of the missing bits.

maybe you could help with some info from your side of the family. it would be great to hear from you again or even meet up some time.

best wishes
chris foreman

My Grt Grandfather; John Waller de Courcy O'Grady was born in Quebec in 1853, but he spent along time in New York and moved to Winnipeg when some of his children were adults.

Hi Chris
This conversation is reminding me exactly why I need a system instead of a pile of papers!

I knew there was a reason for knowing about Selby's father. I've got Selby Adamson and Mary Trotter's marriage (14/4/1863) certificate, which names Selby's father as William Adamson, mariner.

I saw the Samuel Adamson birth info too (and all the other Samuel Adamsons who come after him) and I don't know what to make of it. Was it William's middle name? Or his first name but everyone called him by his midle name, William, to not confuse him with his own dad, maybe? They weren't too precise about full accurate names, but I don't know.

I saw the 1841 Census too with Ann Selby and Elizabeth Nixon. It was very exciting to see the Selby name and maybe finally find a reason for it. I'm hoping that Ann Selby is Elizabeth's mother, which would give us somewhere to start, although if Elizabeth said her maiden name was Nixon... It's very odd, because then who exactly are Ann Selby and Elizabeth Nixon the lodgers? There has to be a major connection because Selby and Mary's son is Selby Nixon Adamson and so is their daughter Isabella so it's important. It would seem as if Selby and Nixon should be the maiden names of Selby and Mary's mothers, but how would that work? Or maybe there was a 1st/2nd marriage in the Selby/Nixon families. At this point, I'm stumped.

As for my side of the family, they're mostly in the North Shields/Wallsend/Whitley Bay area, although I've escaped a bit further than you - I'm in Japan.

As for the history of my side, Selby and Mary's daughter, Margaret Elizabeth, married George Trotter, a different Trotter branch than Mary's Trotter family. They had far too many children, several of whom were given the middle name of Adamson or Buglass from Mary's mother's family: Mary Adamson, Katherine (Kitty) Buglass, Lily, Sarah Ann (Annie), Margaret (Meg), George, Joseph Buglass, Alice, Thomas William (Billy), Edgar Buglass, and my grandfather, who was the youngest, Selby Adamson. He married Elsie Wright and they had Norma (my mother), Selby Adamson, and Michael (who died last November). After all of those kids in earlier generations, it all went a bit downhill. Mike had no kids, I'm an only child and I've got no kids, although my uncle Selby has three: Denise, Selby Michael, and Jeffrey.

I really need to do more work on this online...

And I hope we can meet up when I'm home in July. My mother's cousin Selby Adamson Rix has done a lot of research too so I'll let him know your info.

Please keep in touch about you and your family, and let's try and figure out the Adamson, Selby, Nixon mystery. If you ever want to communicate more privately, I'm on Facebook as Cas Todd.

Speak to you soon
Carolyn

Hey Christine

Sorry, I just saw this message - wish I'd seen it earlier! Yes, that't the one; he was my great great grandfather too, which I guess makes us...?

If you're from the direct Adamson line, I guess your great grandfather was William (Joseph didn't marry, I don't think, and Selby's son had no children) and your grandfather was his son Selby?

My great grandmother was Selby's eldest daughter, Margaret (my grandfather was Selby Adamson Trotter. I don't know how much you've researched but it got a bit complicated because Margaret Adamson married a Trotter, but a different branch from her mother, Mary, so on the Adamson side there are ...Trotter Adamsons and on my Trotter side there are ...Adamson Trotters)...

I'm wondering if we/our families know each other, especially given that your father is a Selby too, just like my cousin, uncle and grandfather, although there have been so many children down the generations, maybe not.

Yes, I've got a copy of the birth certificate too - very frustrating! As far as I can tell, his father was William Adamson, whose wife, as you know, was Elizabeth Selby (b. 1804-6ish), but that's not confirmed, it's an educated(?) guess based on dates, knowledge of Elizabeth's name/birth date/maiden name, but I'm pretty confident. I think I've exhausted all the other possibilities. I've got a bunch of information that I haven't looked through yet so maybe I've got dates, although nothing has jumped out so far.

I haven't had a chance to do any more work on it, but our family was just talking about Selby because of the recent death of an uncle, who wanted his ashes scattered in Cullercoats harbour because of Selby's death there.

I'd love to hear from you too. Please get in touch!
Carolyn

I am looking for any information on Ralph Henry. I am not sure when or where he was born. I do know that he had five children (possibly dont know if she was a half sister)Florence,Douglas,Goldie,Walter(Buster),& Kenneth (Bill). He disappeared in 1916 from North Dakota. We have had sprodic information claiming that he lived and just walked away from his family. Also I am looking for any information about the possible marriage between Kenneth Vern aka Bill and Lavina Black. Posssibly North/South Dakota or maybe Montana. Thank You.
