Hello Bruce,

I am your first cousin, Mary Frances. I have just started researching the family tree and was happy to find your messages. I found information about the descendants of Edward Maxey b. 1674. Samuel Trotman's (Jr.) wife, Mary F. Aday, was the 5th generation down from Edward Maxey.

Please feel free to contact me. mcicero2@my.stlcc.edu
I am looking for information about Francis Maria Aday (1816-1866), who married Reuben S Hamilton and lived in Crawford County, Arkansas. Her son Rufus Lafayette Hamilton is my great great grandfather, and his US Federal Census records show she was born in Tennessee, but some of the census records for her say Alabama. I was told by a relative she was born in Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama, but I do not have her parents' names and no documentation. Boaz has been suggested but the one I found in the 1840 Census for Crawford County would be too young - a brother perhaps? Thanks!
I saw a previous post and wondered whether you have found out more about the Aday family? My great great great grandmother was Francis Maria Aday, who was born 1816 in Tennessee or Alabama. (She had a daughter named Alabama and some records suggeste Huntsville but her son's census records say both parents born in Tennessee). Francis, who may have been called Fanny, married Reuben S Hamilton and died in Arkansas in 1866. I do not have her parents's names but some researchers suggest it was Boaz. The 1840 US Federa Census for Crawford County, Arkansas, lists Boaz W Aday, but he would be too young to be Francis' father. A brother perhaps?

He was my grandfather and I grew up knowing her as my Grandma Paralee. I am almost sure I must have pictures with her in them. She made a amazing meatloaf that I loved as a child. LOL

Murder in Texas

C. G. & Della Mae Aday Cherry
Athens Daily Review – Henderson County, Texas November 1, 1982
Murder Cover-up Suspected in Trinidad Fire
By John H. Cox Review Staff Writer
Recd. from Betty Hollowell Athens, Texas
Trinidad – Law enforcement officials continue scouring burnt embers of a retired couple’s home here for clues to reasons behind a double murder – the second such Henderson County incident within the past month. Positive identification of the victims by doctors at Dallas’ Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences has not yet been determined because of the condition of the charred bodies. However, Henderson County Sheriff Charlie Fields said Dallas County medical examiners had reported initial cause of deaths to be from multiple stab wounds. All evidence, police say, points to the bodies being those of C. G. and Della Cherry, who owned what had been a modest frame house about one mile from Trinidad’s central business district. Dental x-rays are being rushed to examiners in the attempt to substantiate identification. “Up to now we’re batting 1,000 on apprehending murder suspects since I took office almost two years ago,” Fields noted. “All those captured are either serving time or awaiting trial, I only hope and pray our success continues in this case.” Trinidad firefighters, aided by Malakoff volunteers, responded to the West Lincoln street blaze shortly after midnight Friday. Justice of the Peace Judy Newman pronounced the first body, a women discovered in one of the three bedrooms, dead at about 3 a.m. The other victim, a man found in a hallway, was declared dead six hours later by Judge Newman.
Recently appointed Trinidad Police Chief Kenneth Carter said lawmen had been working “around the clock” following the gruesome discoveries in an effort to piece together possible events leading up to the fire and deaths.
Athens Fire Chief Pete Jones and assistant fire Marshall Travis Roberts were at the scene Monday to determine cause of the blaze. Officials suspect arson as a cover-up of the double slaying. Along with Chief Carter, Texas Ranger H.B. “Slick” Alfred, deputies Mike Burton and Howard Copeland as well as sheriff’s investigator Jim Brewer are spearheading the investigation of the case. Several irregularities are being probed. For example, even though the Cherrys were reported in their 70s and not known to walk much, the family automobile was found downtown Trinidad Saturday morning. Whether robbery was a motive or not has not been determined although a wrist watch was discovered on one of the victim’s arms. “We’re going to ascertain their pattern for the last few days and if it differed from the norm. We’ll try to find out who last saw Mr. or Mrs. Cherry Friday night.” said Fields. Less than a week after the Oct. 10 double murder in Eustace, Brewer and Burton returned from Indiana with a suspect. “We know the Eustace suspect is not involved in the Trinidad case, because we have him in our jail,” Fields said Monday, “I only hope we can be as successful this time as we were last month.” The people of Trinidad who still remember the Dec. 19, 1979 slaying of Mrs. Alvin Williams, a murder which to this day has not been solved, obviously share Fields’ sentiments.

Anybody interested in a copy of the original newspaper article email me at williamknight57@yahoo.com
Bill Knight

I am descended from George W. Peters through his wife Eliza C. Sherman. I had occasion to do research in Crawford Co. today and found that Boaz W. Aday was the father of Lucinda Aday. Do you have much info on this family? I know Lucinda was born abt. 1837 in Alabama and died about 1866 in Crawford Co., AR. She and George had 3 children: Willard R.; Sterling P. and Mary Melissa. I have spouse names for all three children. From the census, I find that Boaz had 2 wives, Mary and Susan. Do you know which children belong to which wife? Do you know any other dates and places for this family? Would love to correspond.
Anne

Absent Grave Marker Project

Dear Cousin,

I am writing to you to let you know that some of our grandparents do not have a headstone or grave marker. We know they were buried in a particular cemetery but for whatever reason there is no grave marker. This could be caused by hard times, the weather or vandals. This presents an opportunity for us to honor our roots and to pay respect to all our grandparents by saying we remember where we come from. Or you can come up with any reason you want.

Mary “Mamie” Adelaide Hulse
b. 8 Mar 1861
d. 17 Dec 1942
buried at Middleton Chapel Cemetery, Checotah, McIntosh Co., OK

John M. Aday
b. 15 Jan 1861
d. 5 Aug 1931
buried at Rockhouse Cemetery, Eureka Springs, AR

I suggest we make the grave marker very simple to avoid conflict, e.g. Mary Hulse b. 1861 d. 1942. This is only a suggestion and I’d like feedback on this.

I would guess the cost will be $200 for each marker. I don’t know but in any case do not feel you need to contribute if it would cause a hardship. It would be simpler for me to pay for it in part or in whole which I’m willing to do. This just includes anyone who wants to be included.

I need a volunteer of someone who is willing to have the stone made locally meeting the requirements of the cemetery and having the stone placed. What I suggest when making the arrangement with the cemetery we list the individuals who donated or gave their verbal support to this project.

So, I’m willing to coordinate this. If you are interested please send me your contribution and after the Holidays I will make the final arrangements with our volunteers.

Please let me know if I’m putting my nose where it doesn’t belong and your feelings about my efforts. Also, send this email along to others who might be interested.

Sincerely,
Kenneth D. Brock, 601 – 1740 Comox St., Vancouver, BC V6G2Z1 Canada

Since this letter was sent we have our two volunteers. Ron Aday for Mamie and Fleta Aday for John.
Carroll Co, AR/Greenfield connection

I came across something interesting in the book American Exodus: The Dust Bowl and Okie Culture in California, by James N. Gregory that I was wondering if you know anything about this. “One of Paul Taylor’s graduate students discovered a sizable colony of migrants from Carroll Co., AR, living in and around the Salina[s] Valley town of Greenfield. In all, there were nearly 200 people in the Greenfield area who had come from that sparsely populated section of the Arkansas Ozarks.” If you have any resources about this community in California I’d be interested. Thanks, Ken Brock

James I. Aday b. 18 Mar 1865

I found a new death date for James. Verified that he did not die 6 May 1913. He and his family are listed in the 1920 Census. Also added five children including twins who were all born in OK. I couldn't figure out the twins names very well. Maybe someone can look at the census and help with this.
