John Adcox 1930's Idaho or Washington, US

Found this old newspaper clipping that fell out of a family letter from the 30's (I think). I don't want to keep it, but feel that someone might be interested in it. Pasted below, don't know what paper it is from, but probably one from Lewiston-Clarkston area:

"DEARY MAN BURIED UNDER HAYSTACK

John Adcox Threatened With Being Smothered When Stack Topples on Him Feeding Cattle.

Deary, Nov. 29. -- John Adcox was buried alive in a haystack Friday evening. About 6:30 he had gone with a lantern to the barn to feed his stock. While digging out hay from the stack he was suddenly buried as it toppled over. Noting his long absence from the house, Mrs. Adcox started to the barn carrying a gasoline lamp, but fell and broke the lamp. She hurried into the house and telephoned for help.
Leo Beyer and Albert Pierce were the first to arrive, but without forks they were almost helpless. Others arrived and, after digging down with their hands, they finally released the buried man, who was not seriously injured. "
Re: Name change Adcock-Adcox

Hi folks. My name is Dukeo Baird Adcox, Jr. My Dad was born in Berry, Alabama in 1913. His Dad was Henry Gus Adcox. His great grandfather was Jack Adcox, one of four (?) brothers. I am away from home on business right now, so I dont have more details on their names with me. The story my Dad told me about the name change was that his great grandfather Jack killed a man (a fight over a woman). The Sherrif came to him and told him that if he was still in town when he came the next day, that he would have to arrest him. And the Sherrif said it was pretty certain he would be found guilty and would hang. So Jack loaded up his belongings and got on a ferry that night and crossed the river into the next state. I think I took some notes on this story. If I can find them when I am home next time I will try to add any details I have. Dad also told me tales about his great grandfather Jack and his three brothers being "horse traders" who took horses to Texas and sold them and then went back to Louisianna and Arkansas with horses and sold them there. It seems some of the horses they took to Arkansas were the same as the ones they brought into Texas. So I think there is a bit of colorful history in some branches of the family. I will see what additional information I have at home and add information in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, if any of this sounds familiar to anyone and you have any information that you think might be of interest, please email me at Duke656948@aol.com. Always interested in learning more about the family tree.

Adcox's in Kansas City

Hello distant family, I noticed there are not representation for the KS Adcox's listed so here we are. I am the youngest son of Charles Adcox. I have 5 brothers, Claude, Ray Allen, Daniel, Timothy and David. I also have 6 sisters, Marilyn, Sharon, Peggy, Sheri, Debbie and Tinna. Our Grandfather was Doc Edward Adcox who relocated from KY to KS in the earlier 1900's. I know he had 14 siblings in Tenn, Ky and TX. My sister has some research but still have no idea who my Great Grandfather was. I do have some of Doc's family names and can add them later..
Just dropping a line to say hello from the heartland!

Bruce A Adcox
Adcox/Adcock, Maynard Family Reunion

Trying to get in touch with family members for reunion in 2005. Levi Preston Maynard (Pres) was born about 1861 to Vincent M. and Elizabeth Henderson Maynard. He married first Frona Tennessee Spivey and second Martha E. Adcock. As a result of this marriage, the reunion will include the Adcock/Adcox family because Martha's brother, Wesley Burnie, married my grandmother, Lula Jane Maynard, whose parents were Pres and Frona Tennessee Spivey Maynard.

Please contact me if you have a connection to this family and are interested in attending the reunion.

Donna Teasley
dtteasley@prodigy.net

Hi Roy,

Thanks for the reply,

Yes, we have visited the Hardeman Cemetery. There are several other cemeteries where Adcox members are buried. Not far from that location. If you will e-mail me at cauhedcs@aol.com and give me your e-mail address I will put together the info that I have. It may take me a little while, I have part of the info and my mother has the other part at her home. Just to give you a quick version

Thomas and Rebecca Adcock came to Dekalb County, GA. In the early 1830s from Granville North Carolina. They had several children one of them was James Alexander Adcock who was wounded in the civil war, married Emma Rhodes) they had several children which among them were your Great Grandfather Henry Sylvester Adcock and my Great Grandfather Joseph Franklin Adcock. Plus several more. The family was quite large.
But I have all of the names and dates for the rest of them.

I have traced Thomas and Rebecca back to Granville County North Carolina. At that point it gets hard to track. Several Adcock families came over and settled in VA Some came to GA by NC others went to TN and some traveled west.
Thomas, Any info you have to share would be great, However, I can't find any record of Oscar. What I do know is that Henry Sylvester and Annie Tuccora (Cora) had three children. Annie Leola ( married Jess Coleman) Roy Sylvester ( married Ivy Violet Warmington in Hitchens England during WWII) and Winston Harold ( married Virginia). Researching this side of the family has been difficult for me as well. What little info I do have (names and dates that arent in Hardeman Cemetary) came from Cora's sister Francis about 20 yrs ago for a school project. As far as the name change in spelling, I was told (jokingly?) by Annie, Jess, and later Ivy, that they were bootleggers that got caught and gave a misspelling. But, AdcoX goes back way to far for something like moonshine.
Thomas, please feel free to contact me if you feel I can help.
Are you aware of the cemetary on Glenwood Ave?
Hi Roy,

Thanks for the reply,

Since posting my message back in 2000 I have learned a lot of our family history. My Grandfather James Belton Adcox and Winston and Roy and were first cousins. Also I had Oscar as Winston and Roy's brother do you have any info on him? Sorry to hear that Winston has passed away. Unfortunately my Grandfather James Belton passed away a few years ago too. I never was really interested in our family history until 5 years ago when I started talking with my Grandfather about it, but by that time his memory wasn't to good. So I started with a little info that I got from him and the rest has been hard to come by. But I have quite a bit of info now. I will be glad to share any info that I have with you. I still haven't found out when the spelling of the Adcox name was changed and why. I have viewed some of the census records and the name was spelled Adcock not Adcox. I heard a lot of rumors of why it was changed but have found no clear reason.

Nice hearing from you.
Thomas Owens

My maiden name is Adcox. My fathers name is" Franklin George William Adcox". He often went by just" George William Adcox." Everyone who knew him called him "Bud" Adcox. My mother's name is" Pauline (Hamilton) Adcox". Everyone who knew her called her "Polly". Both are now deceased.
My grandfather's name is " Conard Soasbury Adcox".
I have searched for info on my grandfather and have found nothing, It is like he didn't exist. If anyone has any info please get in touch with me. Supposedly my grandfather was full blooded Cherokee. My mother and father lived in Roane county early in they're marriage and lived the remainder of they're lives in Crossville Tn. Does anyone remember them from Roane Co.? My father was born: May 19, 1922. My father had siblings who are " Marvin, Billy Joe, Ernest Clyde & Grace." ( Not sure about the last two).
I am told that my grandfather also had a brother named "Arnold Henry Adcox". Do any of these names sound familiar to anyone?

Also, If anyone has info about my mothers side of the family please let me know. Her fathers name is "Hershall Hamilton" her mother "Gertrude Hamilton". My mother Pauline, was born
August 28, 1920. I was told that Audrey died at a young age and she was my mothers twin. That is all I really know of her.

You can reach me at the following mail address.
quicksilver26@mail.tnaccess.com.
Fred Harrison Adcox.1 Born on 26 Jul 1890 in Coalfield, Morgan Co. TN.2 Fred Harrison Adcox died in Chattanooga, Hamilton Co. TN in Jan 1967. Fred's parents Pleasant Adcock and Dora Bryant as well as the rest of their ancestors spelled it Adcock instead of Adcox from what I can tell. Although it may just have depended who was writing it! There is an Adcock/Adcox Cemetery in Coalfield, Morgan Co. TN. Both Fred and Marry Etta spelled it Adcox after they were married at least, and it seems their children all spell it Adcox.

Fred Harrison married Etta Mae Simpson. Born abt 1896 in Morgan Co. TN. Etta Mae died in Oakdale, Morgan Co. TN in 1959. Mary Etta shares a headstone with her son's Earnest and Joe Ralf who both died young.,

Her Head stone said her name was Mary Etta Adcock. . . her family called her Etta Mae. She was listed in the 1920 Census as Etta Adcock and the 1930 Census as Mary E. Adcock.

Eda Mae was supose to be (not proven) full blooded Cherokee and she was about 6 foot 1 or six foot 2 tall and large.

I WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE TO FIND ANY INFORMATION I CAN ON MARY ETTA SIMPSON / ETTA MAY SIMPSON's Parents !!!

They had the following children:
2	i.	Dorothy M. (1915-~1976)
3	ii.	Albert C. (1917-1996)
4	iii.	Earnest H. (1919-~1936)
5	iv.	Leonard E. (1921-1990)
6	v.	Mary Jean (1923-1983)
7	vi. Joe Ralph (1935-1938)

Any information on any descendants would be be appreciated - would love to get to know some family . . . with this many aunts and uncles . . . I must have a slue of cousins out there! And who knows, Willard (I knew him as William) or Fae may still be alive!

Hi... I have sketchy info at best, but thought I'd try anyway... one of my "Shacklett" great-great Aunt's was married to an "Adcox"... my father remembers a cousin named Jim (James) Adcox who would have been born abt. 1910-1920 in Seattle... He can't remember which of the Aunt's was married to Mr. Adcox (Jim's father) Names would be Grace, Sue or Louevea Shacklett.
If any of this rings a bell, please let me know. Thanx! Renee JTygrsMom@aol.com
