I am surrently researching the Addy family in historic Ulster where they had association with Loughgall (Co. Armagh), Glenavey (Co. Antrim) and Belfast where they had Linen and other business connections. I am especially interested in Edward Addy b. probably 1830s in Co. Armagh. He had at least three sons, James, john Joseph and Edward Thomas all presentt in the 1901 and 1911 Irish Census. Any information would be appreciated

I'm looking for Eleanor Ellen Addey's parents, too. It's confusing, unless Eleanor came with her mom into the marriage; she's the only one in the household not named Marler. It's mysterious, and I can't believe the answer is so difficult to find.

This is an old thread, and here's an attempt to revive it. Do any of you have more information on the Addy/Addey family? Specifically I'm looking for the parentage of Ellen or Elleanor Addey/Addy (b. 1827 in Ohio), who married Josiah Cruse Marler (b. 1825, Tennessee).

I'm a descendant, of course, and would love to hear from anyone with further information, or relatives who simply want to say "Hi." =)

My line, for the heck of it:

Josiah Cruse Marler and Ellen Addey/Addy
> John Gilbert Marler
> John Raymond Marler--moved from Arkansas to northern Illinois
> Mary Janette Marler
> me--Roger Hayes

Re: Old Folks Revisited

This version has some additional information:

In the Waverly, Ohio Newspaper, on 29 January 1975, the "Old Folks Interview" was published. It originally appeared in the 1 July 1875 issue of the Pike County Republican.
James Addy Interview No. XLVIIII
"I have not a very long yarn to tell. I was 79 years old on the 3rd day of last May, consequently was born in 1795. Old Virginia is my native state. I was born in Jefferson County, within three miles of Harpers Ferry, on the Shepardstown Road, and lived there till I was twelve years old, when my father came to Ohio, and settled in Coshocton County, on Wills Creek near a village now known as Jacobsport.
My father’s given name was William. He was a native of Ireland. Mother’s maiden name was Ellen Clark. I know nothing of my progenitors beyond my own parents. I am the youngest of 15 children. Only two of us are alive. My sister Mary married Reason Baker. They reside in Coshocton County.
I well remember the journey from Virginia to Coshocton County. We came in a wagon to which five horses were attached; we brought out seven horses and several cows. Two of my sisters, Martha and Nancy, were already married, and they remained behind, but afterward came to Ohio. Brother Robert was also married, and had also come out to Tuscarawas County, and we settled near him. Some of the children had died in Virginia. Nine came out at once, viz: Father and Mother, sisters Mary and Joanna, William, Hugh, John, Thomas and myself. As it was in 1808 when we journeyed, we did not meet with any great difficulty in getting along. One incident impressed me deeply where we were on top of the Allegheny mountains we came across two parties who had met, strangers to us, but, evidently relatives or old acquaintances. They were crying bitterly. They were on pack horses. It seems that one family had started for the west; the other was returning from the west to Virginia. I suppose the returning party gave the most languorous account of affairs in the west, and with such effect as to cause the migrating party to turn back. When we arrived in Tuscarawas County we remained with brother Robert. There was no other whites within six miles of us, but plenty of Indians. Father and the boys proceeded to make a small clearing, erect a cabin and we moved in, when clearing out the forest for a farm was at once commenced. We arrived in the fall. That fall we sowed some wheat and then planted corn. The corn was healthy and good, but the wheat was sickly, and though it apparently made good flour and light, nice bread, it made us sick to eat it. A part of the grains had a red end, and it was those grains which contained the poison. Even the cattle and hogs were made sick by eating it. But the crop of wheat grown on the same land the second year was good.
When about 15 years of age, I imagined I was not so well treated as I was a very foolish youngster, and thought I was neglected because my brothers were getting what was befitted their age, and which I was eventually allowed in due course of time. So I, like many other foolish and undutiful sons, resolved to run away. So I "lit out" between two days and clandestinely left kind parents and loving brothers and sisters to be pained at my conduct and apprehensive for my comfort and even safety. I went to Dillon’s furnace, near Zanesville, and hired out as a chopper. In the course of three or four months my brothers Hugh, William and John came down Will’s Creek and the Muskingum river with a raft of timber and learning my whereabouts, came to see me and persuaded me to return home, where I remained a while, till another runaway fit seized me, and I went with a nephew, my sister’s child. We were overtaken when some miles away by my companion’s father, "Knoch" (Enoch) Jones, who took his son back with him and said to me that my brothers would soon overtake and carry me back. We had agreed to go to Virginia, but on being left alone I changed my course and went to Cambridge, and from thence struck out to Zanesville again. On reaching that place I found a man going down the Muskingum and Ohio rivers to Cincinnati with a boatload of produce, who hired me as a hand. Proceeding to that city, where I hired out to work for ten dollars a month. This was in 1812. After awhile I became acquainted with James Guthrie, an army contractor. He offered me $20 a month to team with him. I engaged and he sent me up to St. Mary’s, Auglaize County with a four horse team. Loaded with army supplies I was gone more than two weeks, and owing to the desperate condition of the roads, and the cold winter, I suffered terribly. I could not be induced to try another trip at teaming. I was gone from home a year or more before I returned. When I did so, I found the latch string out, and my family were as glad to see me as though I had not been a very undutiful son. In the spring of 1813, I went to Pittsburgh, but my "badness" had not been fully "sweated" out of me, for I again "toled" away with my nephew. We reached Pittsburgh. I was employed to go on a boat trip up the Allegheny. I afterwards followed boating several years, to some advantage, financially.
In 1818 when 22 years of age, I purchased and paid for 160 acres of land in Guernsey County, owned a horse, cow and some property. On the 10th day of November, I married Rebecca Warden, and we had 12 children, viz: John, Hugh Clark, Jane, Ellen, Elizabeth, Isaac, Mary, Nancy and William, twins, Mahala, Susannah, and George. All grew up to maturity but Mahala and the others married except Elizabeth and Jane who died when young women.
I cleared a part of my original purchase, lived on it some years, sold out, moved to Sandusky, Ohio where Jane died. Then came to Highland County, and to Pike, thence to Purgetts’ farm in Ross County, where I resided 6 years. Then I bought 107-1/2 acres in Twin Township, Ross County, where I now reside. My wife and I still reside on half of it and our son John on the other half.
In 1836 my wandering propensities returned and I was induced to visit the Indians tribes on the Red River and west and northwest as far as Oregon. I was among them in the company with a few other whites, more than five months. The best land I found was in Texas, though I passed over much that tempted me to desire to own, I like Oregon very much.
I possess some peculiarities of character. I never called a physician to administer medicine to myself. I never had a lawsuit nor do I want one. Never had any business in a court higher than a justice’s and then only as a witness or a juror. Have always belonged to the Democratic party. The first presidential candidate I voted for was Andrew Jackson. Have voted at each presidential election since, except for Martin Van Buren, and did not vote for him because I was among the Indians and could not. I attended school in Virginia, pretty constantly, for years and got a good start educationally speaking. I now enjoy reading and like to pursue your "Old Folks Interviewed", but I never expected to be a subject of one till you came along today (12 June 1875). I have never seen my name in print, nor do I know how I shall feel when I do. And I ‘spect my companion who has traveled down the tide of time with me nearly 57 years, will feel as queer as I will, when she learns that I have gone and put my name in the newspaper."

I don't have the same dates for Mordecai Addy. The Alexander born to Marion and Hannah was born in Guernsey County, OH on Sep 1852, according to the Iowa 1900 U.S. Federal Census. He's listed as "Elic" age 47 married to Mary F. age 44, b. Dec 1855. The Alexander Mordecai Addy I have listed, does not show any parents for him. He's always been an enigma to me. My mother-in-law was an Addy and I have tons of imformation on the Addy line back to William, married on Old Swedes Church, Wilmington, DE. The Alexander Mordecai I have shown was born 10 Jan 1857, from Guernsey County record books, but no parents were listed. Maybe you can set both of us posters on this site right

Hi Sharon,

You are correct, it wouldnt hurt to keep an eye open for ABDY as well as ADDY especially if they are from Yorkshire.
My own research is for ABDY/ABDEY/ADBY/ADDY etc. I have quite a bit of information on ADDY as well as ABDY etc.
The name ABDY began in Wath Upon Dearne, Yorkshire when two cousins by the name of BROWN took over ABDY Farm. When most of the ABDYs left the name gradually became ADDY but they were of the same line. A few of my own line have been shown under ADDY but I have proof of their correct surname of ABDY. Please email me at

WJulesWade@aol.com I may be able to help you.
Julie

Hi Annette,
I have a lot of records for the Kirkburton Parish for ADDY, but not Penistone as yet. I suspect that this is your family...
1. DAVID ADDY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 09 FEB 1807 Penistone, Yorkshire, England

2. JOHN ADDY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 21 APR 1802 Wesleyan, Holmfirth, Yorkshire, England

3. ABRAHAM ADDY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 22 APR 1804 Wesleyan, Holmfirth, Yorkshire, England

all children of Josh. ADDY and Sarah (HAIGH).

I do think that our families are most likely linked at some stage, it's just a matter of getting back that far!

Are you able to order in LDS films?
I will be getting the Penistone films in eventually, but it won't be until next year sometime.
Meanwhile keep in contact,
best wishes,
Sharon in Australia

Hi Sharon,
I am looking for any information on a David Addy, married to a Mary? approx. 1833 in Yorkshire. They have children named Charlotte, Jonathan (sp.Emma Charleswoth), Henry (sp. Leah Redfearn), Hannah, Alfred (sp. Anne Wilson), Sarah Ann. I am researching Alfred, and wonder if you can help with any information. Please let me know if you have any of these people in your file, or if you need more information from me to cross-reference.
Thank-you,
Annette Addy

Hi, Dont know if you can help me but I am researching the
surname Addy. From 1800 the Addy family from Wittersham,
Kent, began when a Hannah Relf married John Addy.
That was in 1799.there is no record from where he came.
He died in 1826 aged 49yrs.,which makes him b.1777,
and the only date I can find is a John Addy from Silkstone,
Yorkshire. Just a shot in the dark , have to keep trying.
Regards Anne Addy.Auckland,.

The one I am the most familiar with is the one who married Elinor Clark. Most of my Addys settled in Ohio and later moved to Iowa. Any connection?

Thanks for your reply! I still think they could all be related even though distantly. Why? How odd the name is for one thing, but even more to the fact that these are all still British subjects living in different Shires with the same odd last name. Look how far our own people have traveled in the US! Please keep me in mind and you may e mail too if you might have found something.I will too. Thanks, Crissy

The only George's I have in my Addy family tree are:
George (Henry OR Harry) Addy b. c.1885 Knottingley, WYKS, Eng. (son of Tom Addy & Sarah Hannah Heald). George Heald Addy b. 23 Jul 1912 Knottingley (son of William Thomas Addy & Susannah Hobman). George Richard Addy b. 1858 who died same year (son of Edward & Hannah of Knottingley), and George Edward Addy b. 1868 - 1883 (again, son of Edward & Hannah). They all stayed in the West Yorkshire Region as far as I am aware.

I have about 150 Addy names in my family tree - the majority of them from the Knottingley/Pontefract area - but obviously some branches may have travelled further afield and indeed I am aware of one family going to America in the mid 1800's where four of their children were born (sorry no George). They returned to Knottingley for a while, before finally settling in the Wallingford area of Connecticut. I am in touch with two of their decendants - one living in Virginia and the other in Oklahoma.

Funny you mention a John Addy & Martha as possible parents for your George Addy. I am looking at a John Addy born abt 1729 who married Martha Burnett at Pontefract in 1754 as being possible parents of my William Addy!!! The names keep repeating themselves don't they!

The surrounding towns/villages where they and their descendants lived were.....Knottingley, Ferrybridge, Campsall, Cridling Stubbs, Womersley, Castleford etc.

If anyone has any links with the Addy family from this area, I would love to hear from you.

Michelle

My ADDY ancestors were from Knottingley, Pontefract in West Yorkshire and have traced them back to mid 1700's so far. There were certainly a lot of them around!

Re: John Addy/Sarah Kitchen from Sheffield married abt 1824

Hi Tony,

I believe that Jemima was the daughter of John Addy and Mary Beaver. The christening is on the IGI and there are 2 additional children to this marriage -- Henry christened 1816 and Joseph 1818. Mary must have died before 1824 as John married Sarah Kitchen in that year.
I found the marriage for John Addy and Mary Beaver in Dronfield Debyshire in 1816 on Boyd's marriage index, and also Pallots marriage index, as well as the IGI. In fact Pallots shows both marriages -- Mary Beaver and Sarah Kitchen -- as being in Dronfield.

i have gone round and round with Caroline -- it gets even more confusing as the in law description could sometimes be used for step children. I guess I will have to get the marriage certificate at some stage and that should give me Mary Ann's father's name. I just don't see how it can have been John as he would have been somewhere between 15 and 18 when she was born if the ages are correct!

When you are ready for any other information let me know --I have gone into all the twigs and leaves of the Addy family! -- or if I can be of any assistance. My tree is not on line either -- only my direct line. If you click on my screen name it brings up another way of contacting me which is a private message sent via ancestry.
Regards,
Marilyn

Hi Marilyn,

I only started my research a few months ago and so far have only seriously followed direct lines.

I was born in Sheffield and most of my ancestors came from there so it has been fairly easy to work down to the 1841 census reports (I think that makes me at least a seventh generation Yorkshireman!).

John Addy's daughter Sarah is I believe, who I am descended from. She married Joseph Kenyon in 1847. Kenyon was my Great Grandma's maiden name (Fanny Kenyon).

Sorry I don't have my tree on line, I have created mine on a spreadsheet off line, but I am happy to share any info with you. I also have the seven children of John and Sarah Addy. The youngest being Jemima, it looks as though Sarah was just 16 when she Jemima was born.

I don't think I can help you with Caroline Hodgkinson. I found a Caroline Hodgkinson on the 1851 census (Ecclesall Bierlow 1h) living with her mother, father and fathers brother and sister in law (who's surname is Stocks) They are only 12 and 8 (this suggests they cannot be brother and sister to Mary Ann) - so I am lost on that one!

You say John was married before he wed Sarah, who was this to?

Nice to hear from You

Regards

Tony

Hi,
John Addy is my husband's 3 x great grandfather. I do have more information about the family but still have no sign of Thomas Kitchen after the 1871 census but I have found both his marriages -- although I am not sure who he married in 1865! Chris is descended from Ann Sophia Addy and her husband John Evans of Northampton -- and I have now found the other 7 children and have some information on most of them. I would be happy to share what information I have.
Also have you figured out who the Caroline Hodgkinson on the 1861 census living with John and Sarah as grand daughter is? I have some notes -- she seems to be the daughter of John Hodgkinson and Mary Ann nee Addy (Sheffield Sept 1842 vol 22 page 354) but I can't place Mary Ann in the family as a child of John and Sarah or as a child of his previous marriage to Mary. Any ideas? Regards,
Marilyn
