Amy -

I believe that we have a match! Wendell and Mary (Hees) Adel did indeed live in Guttenberg, NJ, although I believe they lived most of their lives in North Bergen, where there is some indication that Wendell once was an alderman. Soon after Mary's death in 1914, Wendell retired to Naples, NY, where he had a small vineyard near the Finger Lakes. Wendell and Mary are buried in Grove Church Cemetery in Hudson Co.

Wendell's parents were Thomas and Caroline (Gordel) Adel. Thomas was born 1815-6, probably somewhere in Wurtzberg. I have the passenger ship manifest that shows Thomas and Wendell ("Vandel") arriving in NYC in 1865. I have found no indication of when Caroline immigrated, or of other children. Also, I have no indication of their life in the U.S.

I live in Great Neck. Are you nearby? I'd love to hear more about your branch.

Dick Fuhrman

Re: Wendell Adel

Dick,
My hunch was right, then! Wendell and Jacob (1840-1914) were brothers. The family was from Deidesheim in the Pfalz (Palatinate). That fits logically with Wendell having a vineyard and Jacob managing a wine shop in Ridgewood Park, Queens, NY.
Jacob emigrated earlier than Wendell and their father. If his newspaper obituary is right, he came in 1861. At any rate, he was here in time to get married in Manhattan on Nov. 2, 1863, to Margaretha ------- (1838 or 1839-1931). Their first child was born June 29, 1864, and named Caroline-- after her grandmother, no doubt. They had 12 more children, of whom 6 must have died in childhood. We don't even know whether they were boys or girls, much less names or dates. Jacob and Margaretha are buried in The Evergreens cemetery in Brooklyn, with their daughter Annie (Mrs. William Kern), and a John Kern, who I think was Annie's brother-in-law.
I only know of one sibling of Wendell and Jacob. They had a sister, Margaretha (1844- ), who married Robert Hill. My grandmother and her sister used to spend summer vacations on the Hill family farm in Callicoon, Sullivan County, NY.
I have also heard references to an Aunt Apollonia (Tante Loni), but I am not sure to which generation she belonged.
Their father, Thomas Adel, was christened Oct. 7, 1815, and married Caroline on Oct. 9, 1838. He died March 22, 1876. I don't know where either Thomas or Caroline died or are buried. I'm not even sure whether Caroline emigrated, or if she died before her husband emigrated.
I hope this helps to fill in the picture a bit. I'd be interested to find out what else you know.
Amy
Hello! I just discovered Rootsweb.com. I hope you haven't given up looking for a reply.
Wendell and Mary sound familiar. Did they live in Guttenberg, New Jersey? Do you know their dates of birth and death?
It has been a few years since I had time to look at our family photos, letters, etc., but I think I had decided Wendell might have been a brother of my great-great-grandfather Jacob. I will try to locate the papers.
By the way, how do you pronounce the name? I think the original pronunciation was "AY-del," but we have been using the Americanized "uh-DELL" since around World War I, when Jacob's youngest son, Frank, was afraid his German heritage might hinder his political aspirations.
Amy W.
Long Island, NY
