OBIT ADELMAN Louis David "Dixie" 2002 Pennsylvania

Philadelphia Inquirer - Friday, March 29, 2002
Louis "Dixie" Adelman

Carpet company owner, 90

Louis David "Dixie" Adelman, 90, of Montgomeryville, former owner of Adelman Carpets in Montgomeryville, died Tuesday of complications from Parkinson's disease at Grand View Hospital in West Rockhill Township.

With his wife, Mary Katherine Butz Adelman, he operated his carpet store from 1956-97. "His customers were his friends," said his son, Roger. "He loved to interact with people."

"Everyone called him Dixie," said his son, who did not know how his father acquired his nickname while growing up in South Philadelphia.

Mr. Adelman dropped out of high school and sold The Inquirer on city street corners. "My father was educated by reading the newspapers," his son said.

In the 1930s he traveled to Norristown, in the country, to recover from illness - and stayed. He eventually became manager of the Little Ritz, a nightclub in Center Square.

In 1935, he married a local girl. The daughter of German Protestants and the son of Russian Jews "made a great team," their son said. "They were inseparable." The couple lived in Norristown until moving to Montgomeryville in 1962. Mrs. Adelman died in 1995.

A devoted Phillies fan, Mr. Adelman attended games every Sunday and in his 80s went to spring training. "He ran around getting autographs," his son said. "He had a wonderful time."

In addition to his son, he is survived by daughter Jean A. Fried.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Boyd-Horrox Funeral Home, 200 W. Germantown Pike, East Norriton. Friends may call at noon. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery , Norristown.

Memorial contributions may be made to Parkinson's Action Network, Suite 500, 300 N. Lee St., Alexandria, Va. 22314.

Re: Descendants of Morris and Mollie Adelman

Harold, I realize that I am answsering an old message, but please bear me out. My father's uncle was one Morris Adelman who came from what's now Korsun Shevchenskiy in Kiyev gubernia. I believe that Morris was the oldest of several children. Morris was the brother who came to NYC first, around 1900 give or take a couple of years. His father was Shary (Zachariah) and his mother was Cherney.
Some of Morris' siblings were Abraham, Ida, David (my gf), Louis. My father had a sister Jeanne (originally Jenny) who was one of FIVE first cousins named Jeanne (or a variation thereof) Adelman. His other sister was Cecile. She pronounced it Seh seel. She had two first cousins who spelled it the same way but one pronounced it See sill and the other pronounced it Seh Sill. I am the 3rd of my generation to be named Barbara Adelman!
Many of the family settled in Syracuse, NY and were tailors.
My gf and others later moved to Washington Heights (in Manhattan, NYC), the Bronx and Brooklyn.
Barbara Adelman Seidman
New Jersey

They lived in Manhattan on what looks like Rivington Rd. The earliest census I can find is 1900. I have found their name spelled many ways. I hope we can find a connection.
Shawna

My father, Joseph Adelman, was born in Dusuiat, Lithuania around the latter part of the 19th century. He came from a large family, most of whom were murdered in the Holocaust. There are, however, relatives residing in Israel. He had a sister living in Uraguay and a brother in Brazil. He had a brother, I believe his name was Harry, who, at one time was living in New York City. He disappeared some time in the later twenties or early thirties.

Isn't the Internet amazing ??? I'm doing a family history project, and the Rev. J. Adelman married my grandparents - Leah Orenstein and Woolf Solomon - on 14th October 1934.

I have a picture of the Rabbi who married my other grandparents, as it was at the Great Synagogue, and there was a picture of him on the Internet.

So I just wanted to see Rev Adelman too - is that silly ???

Lauren

We are a group of Burros cousins looking for the descendants of one Sarah Burros Adelman (Though we are not certain whether it was Adelson/Edelson/Adelman/Edelman) whose husband was Albert Adelman. The Burros family was from the Minsk area, came to the US in the 1880's, and went to the Lower East Side of NYC. Some of the Burros Family went to Connecticut.Along with Sarah, there were 5 Burros brothers who came to America; their father, Sinai Baruch Burros remained in Minsk.

My father's brother, Leon Adelman had a son, Arthur. Arthur's sons are Marc and Jeffrey. Both my uncle and cousin have passed away. They lived in the Washington Heights area of Manhattan, NYC. It's a matter of medical history. Does anyone know Marc and Jeff? Since neither of my two aunts had children, my cousins would be the only ones in the family who might have also inherited a kidney disease.
Thank you.
Barbara Adelman Seidman
I'm not sure when my great uncle came here but he was the one who sponsored my gf David and another great uncle, Louis, when they came here @ 1904.
Do you know the names of other Adelman/Edelman siblings or their parents?

I've recently discovered that grandpa David Adelman had several brothers: Louis, Joseph, Aaron, Abraham. The family was originally from Korsun, Russia (Kiev) and they were tailors. The family settled in Syracuse, NY and in NYC. One of Louis' daughters married Earl Prigoff of Syracuse and the other married Ernest Bauer of Columbus, OH. He had a son, Stanley. My father was Harry Adelman and he had a brother Leon and sisters Jeanne and Cecile. They came to the US @1900. Do I have any long-lost relatives out there?

Since my gf was born in 1876 and one of his brothers was born in 1878, I'd assume that my ggf was born in the 1850's or 1860's. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?

I think that there might have been another Harry Adelman in the family in addition to my father who also lived in Syracuse, NY. Some of my family did live in the Pittsfield, MA area but I'm not sure of all of the years there. My gf, David Adelman and at least one of his siblings were born in Korsun/Kiyev, Russia in the 1870's. I think that there was a sister also born in Russia but no one seems to know her name. My great grandparents were Zacharia and Cherne Adelman. I think that the name was originally Edelman and before that Eidelmann. Most of them were tailors.
