Re: Adney, Daniel Webster

My records say that Daniel's father was William Perry Adney& Ruth Higley. The story I've been told is a Thomas Adney was born in King's Square, Clerkenwell Parish, England. He says he was knocked on his head and taken aboard a ship on the way to America. He always intended to go back but each time he got sick and then met a pretty Quaker nurse & married her. They had about 8 Children. He first arrived in Charleston, SC then they moved into NC then later VA where they stayed to raise their family. The 2 older boys and their familys moved to OH the some moved to IL.

If you live near a LDS Church Library you can get a set of fiche for a low price but they Have to stay at the library you can copy from them and look at them when ever they are open. They are a set of 5 fiche. A man by the name of Edward Tappen Adney Researched the family name years ago. And his book is on these Fiche. The price is worth it.
I have copied all the pages and they fill two big binders. He has book broken down to AR Adneys, IL a Adneys, and so forth. Good Luck on your research.
Rosemary Teague

My paternal grandmother was Alice Adney; she married Harland Mayne. I believe her father was George and her mother was Elsie. I know she had a brother, George Adney. If you have applicable information would you be willing to send it. My Dad knew there was Irish decent but could not even initially remember his grandparents' names.

Just talked too my Mom. She remembers her father, Roy Robert Adney building a home in San Joaquin Ca for his parents. Grant Robert Adney had suffered a stroke and my grandparents Roy and Nela Ann Griffin-Adney wanted them close during their last days. My mother, Bonnie Mae Adney-VanTassel said Grant Robert had a handlebar mustache and a full beard and that there was nothing Indian about him whatsoever. Mom remembers her grandmother, Dollie Bobb-Adney spoke with a German accent. My mom is the youngest of five siblings born to Roy Robert and Nela Ann Adney. The four older siblings have sadly passed.

Hello Mary! Good to see you still follow these posts! I have a copy of your book with the brown cover. I am from the William Adney family of Wisconsin and I have a copy of John Robert Adney's notes. Almost all of the information on this family came from his research. He corresponded with Edwin Tappan Adney in the 1940's and ETA's son wrote to him when ETA died. Jim Wheaton put a lot of J. R. Adney's information about the William Adney family on his website. I have obtained more photos and documentation from J. R. Adney's dau-in-law. There was nothing in John's papers about Grant Richard Adney being an adopted son, but his granddaughter has written to me. (She is the one who wrote that post above about Grant being a Chippewa Indian.) Very interesting! I have posted many of the photos from John R. Adney's private collection on my tree at www.ancestry.com. If you want to see some of this, you can write to me directly, if you want, at doreenmc@sbcglobal.net.

I will now post the new article I found. PLEASE NOTE William Adney died in 1873, NOT 1875. There was an error in John R. Adney's records, or someone misread a "3" as a "5".

Source: "The Prairie du Chien Union" , Friday, January 2, 1874, Pg. 3, Col. 3:
Wm. Adney, one of our first settlers eat (sic) his supper at the house of his son, apparently in good health, and was found dead in his chair the next morning. CLAYTON.

(Prairie du Chien Public Library, Index of the Union, Wm. Adney death date shown as 12/16/1873. Per Mary Antoinne, Head Librarian, Doris Adney, daughter George Adney, used to be the librarian there, and she may have known the death date.)

Per John R. Adney's records on microfiche #6010571 at the FHL: on May 28, 1941 John and his father, John Alvin Adney and friend, Thomas Maguire visited the old Winn Cemetery at North Clayton, Wisconsin near Soldiers Grove. William Adney's grave could not be located as there had been no headstone erected; but the approximate location of the grave was found by his father (John Alvin).

NOTE: The old Winn Cemetery is now known as NORTH CLAYTON CEMETERY and other Adney and McMillin tombstones are found there.

It looks like Ruth Higley Adney Adney waited exactly one year after William's death to marry Henry McMillin on 14 Dec 1874.
Re: William Adney and Ruth Higley (obituary)

I will post Ruth Higley Adney's obituary in case other new researchers come across this thread. She was definitely the daughter of Elam Higley. I have already corresponded with my distant cousin, Leroy Higley, in July, 2010 and sent him all my documentation. Our theory as to why she is shown as "Ruthy Glenn" on her marriage certificate to William Adney is that she was raised by the Glenn's after the divorce of her parents, Elam Higley and Jane McMillin. Members of the McMillin family of Gallia County, Ohio show Jane McMillin married to Thomas Jones on 24 Nov 1812. I believe there was only one Jane McMillin in Gallia County in 1806, and that her first marriage was to Elam Higley as found in county records. That would make it a 2nd marriage for her to Thomas Jones in 1812. Perhaps Ruthy did not go to live with her new stepfather. These are all conjectures, but our ADNEY family historian John Robert Adney definitely shows Ruth's parents as "Elim Higley & Jane McMillan". I have copies of his records found on microfiche at the FHL.

Now the obituary:
Obituary found at the McGregor Public Library, Northeast Iowa Times, January 7, 1895:
(My ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS shown in parentheses.)
“DIED: At the residence of her son, J. T. Adney, at 7 a.m. on December 23rd, 1894. Ruth Higley was born in the state of Virginia (incorrect) on January 12th, 1808, was united in marriage to Wm. Adney in Vinton, Ohio where they resided until 1855. They then located to Crawford County, Wis., where her first husband, Wm. Adney, and son Perry died in 1873. Seven children still survive her, Mrs. S. J. (Sarah Jane) Templeman, residing at Fredonia, Kansas; Mrs. (Mary Ann) M. A. Hopkins of Richland Center, Wisc.; J. W. (Jonathan) Adney and D. W. (Daniel) Adney of Knapps Creek; F. M. (Filinda) McMillen, Mrs. E. C. (Esther Caroline)St. John and (J.)T. (John) Adney, all of this vicinity. She had 40 grandchildren and about 60 great grandchildren. She had been a member of United Brethren church for many years. She was a great sufferer for two months previous to her death and bore it with Christian fortitude. She was ready and willing to die, her trust was in the Lord her long life through. She was a cheerful, loving, and patient mother. The funeral took place on 10 a.m. on Christmas, Rev. Mr. Marshall officiating. The remains were laid to rest in Giard cemetery. The children wish to thank their dear friends who kindly assisted them in their sad bereavement.”

Doreen's note: The Adney family did not mention her second husband, Henry McMillin, that she married on Dec. 14th, 1874. They also did not bury her with the McMillin name. Ruth was living with Henry in 1870 before they were married in 1874 and she is also found with him on the 1880 US Census. William Adney died Dec. 16, 1873. (I found the newspaper clipping at the Prarie du Chien library.)

I also have a photo I took of Ruth's headstone which says "RUTH HIGLEY ADNEY". The fact that she named one of her sons "Austin Higley Adney" is also indicative that she was the half-sister of Austin Higley, born 1829 to Elam Higley and Susan Clark.

Attention all Adneys: PLEASE CORRECT YOUR RECORDS.
At last, I have found proof of the year William Adney died. Found at the Prairie du Chien library, newspaper on microfiche "The Prairie du Chien Union" dated Friday, January 2, 1874, Pg. 3, Col. 3:

"Wm. Adney, one of our first settlers eat (sic) his supper at the house of his son, apparently in good health, and was found dead in his chair the next morning. CLAYTON"

At the Prairie du Chien Public Library, there is an "Index" of the Union, and Wm. Adney death date is shown as 12/16/1873. Per Mary Antoinne, Librarian, Doris Adney, daughter of George Adney, used to be the librarian there, and she may have known the death date. There is no death record or cemetery record for William Adney. Per John R. Adney's records on microfiche #6010571 at the FHL: on May 28, 1941 John and his father, John Alvin Adney and friend, Thomas Maguire visited the old Winn Cemetery at North Clayton, Wisconsin near Soldiers Grove. (Now known as North Clayton Cemetery.) William Adney's grave could not be located as there had been no headstone erected; but the approximate location of the grave was found by his father (John Alvin). John R. Adney's typed records has the death date as 12/15/1875, a typographical error as this newspaper article now proves... For more on William Adney, please see my family tree "AdneyMcMill2" and read two stories attached to William Adney.

i saw your posts on the adney's, i decend through John D Adney b abt 1806 in VA who married a Mary Ann. they had Daniel Adney abt 1829 in OH. Daniel married a Phoebe and they had 7 children, one being Mary Ann Adney. Mary was born about 1851 in Ohio (i think in Gallia) and shows up on ancestry as May A. Adney who married a Cyrus Moneysmith 25 Aug 1872 in Jay Co., IN. Mary and Cyrus had only 1 child, a Phoebe Moneysmith b abt 1873. Mary must have died by 1880 because Cyrus remarried and had only 1 child with his second wife. Phoebe Moneysmith is my gg-grandma on my dads side.

Has anyone traced this line past the Revolutionary War? Their is a RW soldier by the name of William Abany/ Abney. Also, in 1850, John D Adney's mother is living with he and his family. Her name looks like "Barbany" from John and Barbany's ages i think John's father was a William Adany b bet. 1766-1784.

The man died, the mother wanted to go back to the reservation. The tribe wouldn't let her take the boy with her because he had been born off the reservation, so she gave him up for adoption. His adoptive name was Grant Richard Adney.William Perry Adney adopted him. Any help would be greatly appreciated in finding who his birth parents were. Thanks!

My ggg-grandfather is William Adney, born in 1802 in Virginia. He married a woman named Ruth on May 25, 1822 in Gallia County, Ohio, but there seems to be uncertaintly whether it was Ruth HIGLEY or Ruth GLENN. Most of the family trees that I've seen have shown Ruth HIGLEY, but Leroy Higley, author of "The First Seven Generations of Captain John Higley" has told me that Ruth Higley marrying William Adney does not match his records. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated!

Brenda Lyons

P.S. My gg-grandfather is Daniel Adney, son of William.
I, too, am a direct descendant of Thomas Adney from England. A John Adney from McGregor, Iowa has done extensive research into this side of the family, but I still don't know the direct line from my grandfather, Archie Adney To Thomas Adney. I have gotten to John Taylor Adney b. in Vinton, OH 1843. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

My mother was an Adney and am sure our lines are connected way back but there were a lot of Adneys. Just to let you know that Adney is an English name and it can be traced back to the 1400's in England. My line came from John T Adney b. 1843 in Vinton, OH and married Sarah Oxberger.
