When my father passed away he left me a painting of a lake scene with a Galveston return address on the back with the name Roddy Adolphus. I don't know if Roddy was the artist or a previous owner. Any relation?

Hmmm! That is my father's name. He is from Atlanta. My grandparents always told me that I was related to Swedish royalty (Gustavus Adolphus) and that our family entered the US from Jamaica. I think there was also a branch that came through Canada, maybe the Marzolfs. There was a Roddy Adolphus in Galveston who was related to us. My greatgrandfather was a doctor in Georgia and a lot of poor people who couldn't pay him named their children after him, so their could be lots of people with Adolphus with a first name.

Yep, we're cousins! I have to go home and review the info I have. Not too many wanted to talk or remember, which is kind of understandable. Mom (Ginger) said she found out some stories, but won't repeat them. So taking her at her word, I fully understand why we are all so divided. I can be reached at ladymaven@hotmail.com any time you want to compare notes. I'll be in touch with the info and order I have off this site as most of the info is for people still living and don't really want their info out there for all of cyberspace to see. Again understandable.

This is great - three years I've waited and actually have been looking for you. Aunt Adelaine (Jerry) said you were researching the family, but I never found out how to reach you. Now I know. together I think we can fill a lot of wholes! Talk to you soon. All the best - Val

Faye,
Unfortunately neither Donna or I have too much info on the Adlophus line. I'll check what I have and let you know. Is there any possibility that your friends Aldophus came from Jamaica? It seems that our line came from there after leaving Sweden and then to the US. Donna and I are direct cousins, so we pretty much have the same info - unless Donna have you gotten anything new recently?

I'll be in touch soon Faye. Thanks for your inquiry

Hi Donna and Valerie: It has been a while since I have been in this message board...I just saw your posting from last spring and hope you still are logging in. Looks like you did piece the family to Jamaica...after seeing this I am even more convinced that we are related. Here is how I think it goes:
My ggrandmother was Blanch O Adolphus (b1873 or 1876) She is buried in Miami, Florida. She moved down there from PA to be with her son (my grandfather) Andrew. Blanche's mother was Margaret L. (Finlow) Adolphus who was married to James Adolphus from Jamaica. Her mom's family was from NJ. The 1880 Census states that my ggrandmother had two siblings (James and Mary older). It sounds like you both come from the line of James? My Dad is in town and mentioned that he had an Uncle (would be a great uncle) that was once the mayor of Avalon, NJ and I think that is from the Finlow line. I face the same disadvantage as you...not knowing anything much about the Adolphus family. I just know that my Dad's side has nobility, which I believe comes from the Adolphus line. I have tried to find out things about the Jamaica connections for years and hit dead ends! Please drop me an email if you should get this message! Bren
Valerie or Donna, do you by any chance know of a Robert Adolphus? He came from upper Quebec in 1809 to Marietta, Ohio with a Bill and Marie Cameron and their son, Will who was 6 months at the time. I am helping a friend and if you can help it will be wonderful! Thanks, Faye.

...also, according to the 1900 census Blanche's mother is Mary (or Margaret b. Oct.1834 N.J.) L. Adolphus and what I believe to be either a older or half/sister Mary (b. April 1863) is also listed in this census!
Bren
I ran accross your emails...not sure if you can help? I am looking for imformation on my Dad's grandmother's side...her name was Blanche Adolphus and she was born in Phil., PA 1873. Her dad's name was James M. Aldophus. From what I can figure out he might have been married before. The census records for 1880 has his place of birth Jamaica (?)...any chance they are the same Aldophus as you speak of?

Thanks,
bren

Dear Valerie,

Yes, I'm Joan's daughter (Ada's granddaughter, and Catherine Brown's great granddaughter). How did you guess? This makes us some sort of cousins, doesn't it?

Here's what I've got (briefly):

Catherine Brown married James Adolphus. Their children included Mary, Catherine, Eva, Letitia (your ggrandmother), and Ada (my grandmother, b1902). When Catherine Brown died, many of the children went to foster homes (including Mary and Ada). Mary lived with Blanche after Ralph died, but you are right -- Blanche is not a relation.

I think Catherine's parents were Catherine and John Brown (I don't know her maiden name). They may have immigrated from Ireland, but again I'm not sure here. Mom (Joan) believes our Brown family was in the States by the time of the Civil War.

Ada's children were/are: Adelaide, Ruth, Joan and Bill (Ruth and Bill are deceased). Ada married James Sloss, who immigrated from Maghera, Ireland.

Joan's children: me (Donna) and Suzanne.

So, we've got all the same names, but not quite in the same order. But this is what I've got from Mom -- does it help at all? Does it fit with what you know? I know Mom and Eve Tanner were in touch until not too long ago, and Mom and "Aunt" Mary (actually my great aunt) were very very close.

Let's stay in touch -- I don't think there are that many of us left. Best, Donna
