Hi Cheryl,

I am Bill Doolin who spent a few days In the Westport area in July 2007 looking for my long lost relatives.Unfortunately, I don't pick up on the Adrain name until I get back home in Southwest Oklahoma. Johanna Tobin married David Adrain in 1876 at Delta in the County of Leeds.Johanna is the sister to my great grandmother,Alice Tobin.David was the son of Samuel Adrain and Lydia Kimberly.

Philip Tobin and his brother Patrick came to this area from County Wexford Ireland in 1848.They both married local girls and had 11 and 13 children respectively. The next generation was even more prolific.A cousin,Jim Duff, from Sandy Oregon and I from Lawton,Oklahoma have now completed the next generation with the find of Johanna in the Forfar area with current estimates being in the range of 1500 descendents.

I want your help in going forth with the children and descendants of David and Johanna. What do you Know? and better yet does the Forfar cemetery hold many of the answers?

I will send you the family tree so far if you desire! Do you know Gwen and Vince Tobin in Westport? They were absolutely the best hosts this summer.

Sincerely,

Bill Doolin

Hello, I'm looking for information on my branch of the Adrain family (may be registered as Adrain, Drain, O'Drain, Adrian). My great-grandfather Hugh Adrain (who married Hadessa Church from Co. Derry and subsequently moved to Omagh, Co. Tyrone) was born born ca. 1876-1885.

His siblings were called Alexander, Stewart (Stuart?) and Annabella (?). I think the family would have been established in Ballymena-possibly near Ballyloughan, in Co. Antrim. Annabella Adrain married unknown Wright and one of their children was William (Willie) Wright, also of Ballyloughan.

The father of Hugh/Alexander/Stewart and Annabella Adrain emigrated to USA (likely pittsburgh pennsylvania) to join family there, but died shortly after arrival. The mother of Hugh/Alexander/Stewart and Annabella Adrain then subsequently moved her family to Belfast, where I believe she and two of her sons established a Tailors shop.

I would like to trace the names of the parents of the four Adrain siblings, or indeed, any other information on their descendants.

Sorry Cheryl, but I have no other information to offer. All I know about Robert Adrain's family, is that his mother and father were born in Canada, and that Robert was born in Minnesota, according to census records. A search for Adrain/Adrian in Minnesota census records turned up nothing on a Robert, nor any Adrain's born in Canada.

hi I was going through old postings and found this one of yours on Robert Adrain. If you don't mind could you share with me the names ect of this family back as far as you can. A few of the Adrains from ontario and other provinces went to the USA years ago.
One of our family line a james churchill adrains family changed the spelling of Adrain to Adrian around 1900. James Adrain born 1837 to Samuel (born 1810 in Ireland son of Hugh sr. and Elizabeth (no last name)and Lydia Kimberly settled in Orford county near chatham ont. Then in 1914 James being an old man came back to Leeds county ontario, town of Forfar and was killed while drawing a load of hay by horse. I believe a brother of his Horce went to the states some place also.
I also believe that very early on a James Adrain came from Ireland or Scotland and settled in the USA. and that is how the name got built up in the usa.

Re: Arden Adrain dies also sister Mary Bernice Harrison

In answer to the question on the origin of the name it is Irish. The name is first recorded in the Annals of Connacht for 1246 when the family were defeated by the coalition of the Normans and the Mac Dermots (Mac Diarmaida). They were hereditary custodians of the monastery at Boyle. Co. Roscommon. The name was originally Ua Dreáin and I believe the name is also Ua Direáin. It was originally a christian name in keeping with most Irish names The Ua is the same as Ó today and the name has been corrupted by loss of vowels. The same thing happened in the case of many other names e.g. Ua (Ó) Gníomh = Agnew. The root of the name might be from Draoi + éan i.e druid bird = wren. I have never encountered anyone of the name who didi not ultimatel come from Ireland. If you have an example let me know. It is not the same as Adrian although some Adrains have changed the spelling to that. It was always claimed in my family that it is Ó Direáin or Ó Dreáin in Irish. I am the last Irish speaker in my branch of the family. The name in its various forms i.e. Adreane, O'Drain, Adrain etc. was mainly found in the coastal districts of Conamara or in Antrim e.g. Aonraí (Henry) an Dónall Ó Dreáine are found in the old Carrickfergus records for the period 1550-1590. The name is also found in Antrim in the hearth Money Rolls of 1669. I hope this brief summary helps,
Stiofán Ó Direáin

Robert J. Adrain, born in Minnesota, lived and died in Montana

Looking for any information on a Robert J. Adrain. I first found mention of him in the Montana Genweb site, where he is listed as being granted homestead land in McCone County, Montana, 320 acres, in August 1913. I then found him and his family on the 1920 and 1930 census for McCone County Montana, School District 7, along with his wife Minnie (Motley) and their four children James, Mildred, Lloyd, and Bulah. Both censuses show him to have been born in Minnesota, with parents being born in Canada. Minnie, his wife, was from Virginia and is a distant cousin of mine. I found a Robert Adrain on the Soc.Security Death Index who died in 1982, apparently at age 100, last address McCone County Montana. I also find a Minnie Adrain, birthdate is correct at 12/25/1886, also died in 1982, but living in Ravalli county Montana. Any information on this family is much appreciated.

Re: Robert J. Adrain, born in Minnesota, lived and died in Montana

Sorry, but that's all I know. The information was taken from census data that indicated his birthplace as Minnesota, with his parents' birthplace as Canada. The first census taken after Robert was born was 1890, but it's not available since all were destroyed in a fire. I tried looking for Adrain in the 1900 Minnesota census, but it's not indexed so it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. So, I threw this out there hoping someone connected to the Adrain family would remember one of their's migrating to Montana as a homesteader about 1913.

Re: Arden Adrain dies also sister Mary Bernice Harrison

Dear Cheryl: Just a quick note I grew up around Westport, Barbara Denison and know of the Adrain family, also I worked with both of Arden's wives Mary and betty beautiful good people. But what I want to ask you is some background on the Adrain family. I will explain what I'm researching is a Sophie(Cleophile) Dupuis she is the gggrandmother of my husband JD Wayne Laverdure. She m his gggrandfather Francois Laverdure Jan 18, 1830 Mission Church Bytown(Ottawa). We cannot find her parents but it is possible Alec Dupuis and Philomene Adrien in the Hull area early 1800's with 10 children that she may be one of them. Is Adrain and Irish name or is it a French name. What got me thinking this might be the same family Adrain/Adrien is I remember my parents talking to them when I was young child and Don Adrain was m to a Kathleen Norwood and Don had a twin sister Edna Welch . they seemed to have relatives in the Ottawa area and why I remember this is Edna's husband was a bother of Warren Welch our neighbour and he was just like an adored uncle to me. Anyway hope you don't mind me asking you questions Thanks Barb Denison-Laverdure
Samuel Adrain (1854-1933) Sarah Morris (1859-1938)

The research that I am doing is on the Morris side.
John Morris is my ggrandfather and his sister Sarah Morris married Samuel Adrain.
the information that I have indicates that both Sarah and Samuel are buried at Forfar, Ont.
Samuel's parents were Samuel Adrain, b. 1810, Ireland and Lydia Kimberly, b. 1818, U.S.A.
Sarah Morris was from Portland, Ont. I would be interested in any information on Sarah and Samuel.
I have no record of any children If there is any connection, please let me know.
