I found that Ann, widow of Capt James Adshead, died in 1822 at Yew Tree Cottage Eccles. My ancestor John Hodson (married to Ann Lee)was living at this address in 1825. He was a cotton manufacturer in Manchester. I wonder if there may be a connection?

Apologies for the late reply, I was most interested in your reply as I have an extensive family tree plotted up and can see whereabouts you're descended from. It was nice to hear of Eliza's surname and of her brother. I shall add this to the family tree.

I made a breakthrough a while ago. I stumbled upon Captain James' will by accident. Itself the will has been most informative and also came across an obituary notice for him as well. It stated that he died aged 45 and his second wife also passed not long after him aged 32yrs. You are correct in your assumption that Captain James originated from England with the army and he also returned home to die. How odd that is. But the will is quite enlightening. If you'd like to see the will - let me know. I also confirm that Captain James was also from the 22nd Light Dragoons which probably explained his meteoric rise from signing up to a commissioned post.

Kind Regards

If you can’t find a birth, marriage or death recorded in any of the GRO Overseas indices [mainly army], then for a BMD [and more] in India, it’s more likely in the records of the India Office [Department]; these are held in British Library’s Asia, Africa & Pacific Collection.

The Library has recently introduced an online “Family History Search”, where transcripts of the event certificates can be viewed for free, with a charge for copies of the actual certificate/record entry. There are presently 300,000 records online, this represents only about 10% of the total held at the Library.

Couldn’t find the birth of Mary Anne Rose Adshead on the British Library’s India Office Family Search at http://indiafamily.bl.uk/UI/Home.aspx but did find her parents marriage:

Name: Charles Josiah ADSHEAD
Event type: Marriage
Start date: 29 May Start year: 1861
End date: End year:
Location: Vepery
Spouse: Rose Eleanor CORNER
Age: 24
Status: clerk, BAINBRIDGE BYARD CARR & CO.
Parents: James Hare Adshead
Notes:
Transcribed by: British Library
India Office Records Reference: N/2/42 f.143
Source name:
Source year:
Source edition:
Presidency: Madras

Certificates are much more expensive than the GRO’s.

I’m sure the Library will have a copy of Mary Anne Rose’s birth & baptism on record, just not online yet.
Dear C_Adshead,my father's mother's maiden name was Adshead, and her great great grandfather was Lieutenant James Adshead. James married twice, firstly to Eliza Hare, and then secondly to Ann Coats. I believe my relations are descended from children of the first marriage. I also believe that James Adshead arrived in India from the UK in about 1803. I do not have details of James' date or place of birth nor details of when or where he died. The details that I do have were obtained by my sister, who is currently on holiday until the end of this week. She has family tree details of James' descendants via Eliza Hare up to my grandmother Muriel Beatrice Adshead (1905-1992). I will supply further information when she returns. I would be grateful if you could let me have any information that you may have relevant to James. I would also mention that Eliza's brother was Lieutenant Colonel James Hare who I believe was serving with HM 22nd Dragoons in 1814. I await your reply.

Hello, My name is Robyn Atkinson and I am searching for my paternal grandmother Jessie Lee Adshead (nee Moar) who was also reportedly born in India in 1896. My grandfather, Bertrand John Adshead, was in the British army from 1916 to 1927 and was in Madras from 1925 to 1927. He was born in Lamberth London on 5th October,1895. Bert & Jessie were married in Edinburgh on 11th april, 1917.They had 8 children, Bertrand, Cecil, Lillian, Peter,Desmond, Beatrix, Vera & Daphne. They emigrated to Australia in 1937 along with granddad's brother Frank. Are any of these people in your tree, and if they are do you have any information about Jessie Lee(Moar), I am unable to find out about any birth records in India.
Cheers, Robyn

Bertram (known as Albert) Adshead (b1888) was the son of James Adshead b.1854 and Elizabeth Adshead (nee Winter) b.1856 of Hammersmith London. Albert emigrated to Australia prior to the First World War, and later joined the Australian army. During the war, when on leave, he visited his family in Hammersmith, London. After he returned to Australia his family in England never heard from him again. Does anyone know what happened it him?

I have been doing a lot of work on the Adshead family in the Altrincham Bowden Hale area. Found your Joseph on 1871 and 1881 census along with marriage of daughter Hanna Brown & family on Cheshire Mar Reg. Picked them up because his wife was from Bowden area. Have not been able to tie him into the Altrincham bunch. Email me directly if you would like the census info. Tried attaching my info but it is on excel. John

Misspelt Surnames

While searching through batch numbers for Cheshire I found a John Adshead Christening on 07 May 1654 at St. Mary, Disley. My earliest ancestor here in America named John Adsit died 1734. He was supposedly English. His first wife was born 1653. This is the only man that fits the time frame in all the many batch numbers I have searched. Could this possibly be one and the same man? And can anyone suggest how I prove or disprove this. The christening record lists his father as William and mother as Grace. Found a sister Marie but no other siblings.TIA

Hello- if you still look at this...I believe that my grandfather and yours might have been brothers. He was William Lester Adshead and he was a tilesetter in Paterson, NJ in the early 20th century, and I believe that my father William Lester Jr. once told me that he had a brother named George. All I know is that they immigrated to the US from Manchester, UK. I never met him. He died of lung cancer many years ago. My dad died in 2007 at age 97.

Hi, I am also an Adshead, I have been researching my father's side back up to 6 generations and have found that most of them originated from India from one english Ancestor in the 1800's. And that the Adshead's you mentioned are currently in Australia, half of them is in my family tree. I have come to a dead end on the english ancestor - Captain James Adshead who married Ann Coats in 31.12.1814 in Madras, India. I cannot find his birthplace in UK.

Cheshire
This is a local history venture and we only have information on the families who lived in Burnage one of the townships of Manchester.
We know nothing of them elsewhere.
If you know of a Burnage or Bolton connection please contact us.
