Surnames: afeman/affeman/afferman
hello everyone doing research on the afeman family. hope this info helps. here is my direct lineage as i know it thus far:
(me) michael j. afeman
(father) larry j. afeman-hineston, la
(g.father) hardy bryant afeman, sr.-hineston, la
(g.gfather)john henry afeman 8jan1895-2dec1960
married margaret a. neal
(g.g.gfather)---my gfather says that his name was henry afeman from lamourie, la near lecompte---married virginia spikes who married wm. h. potter after henry's death. i have found reference (in rapides parish marriage records) to a nicey virginia kelly marrying j.f.h. afferman(note spelling) 31oct 1893. her last name is in question, however i have verified that first and middle name of "virginia spikes"afeman potter was in fact nicey virginia. i believe these people are in fact the direct line and not different people altogether.

(g.g.g.gfather)------I believe him to be h.afferman--rapides parish. i have found reference to him in rapides parish prisoner of war records. parolled in alexandria, la 4june1865. his brother?? was parolled on same date (c.afferman---i have census records of charles afferman, wife, six daughters and one son jacob---rapides parish census 1870. i believe that h. afferman would have been my g.g.g.grandfather. if he was my g.g.grandfather j.f.h.(henry?) afferman instead (and this is possible) he would have been approximately 65yoa upon marrying nicey virginia kelley----i am basing this info only on records indicating his brother(charles afferman) was 42yoa in the 1870 census records.

family lore has it that my g.g.grandfather and a brother came to louisiana from hamburg and established a plantation (my grandfather says he went there as a child and that it was called afeman plantation) in lamourie, la. also says they were barrel makers...1870 census shows charles' occupation as cooper(this is roughly a barrelmaker)...

i hope this information helps everyone. these are the basics of what i have but i am trying to put together a little more. i have been researching very passively over the past few years but have found most of my info beyond my g.grandfather during the past few weeks. i plan a trip to the rapides courthouse, rapides genealogical library and lamourie soon. i would certainly appreciate any comments or corrections from any of you posting on this site. please email me at mjafeman@hotmail.com. look forward to learning more. thanks. michael.
