Did Holoway Agerton die in May or December?

The references to Holoway Agerton (my GG Grandfather) indicate he died on 22 Oct 1893. However, my grandmother, Faye Reed Agerton, typed a copy of his obit (long before copier days) indicating it was actually 22 May 1893. Newspapers burn and the small East Texas and Gainsville papers cannot be located on line.

Does anyone have the Holoway's burial records (Walling Cemetary, Cook County Texas), the family Bible page or obit from the paper you are willing to share?

He is a Civil War Veteran and I am looking for records of his death for my lineage papers in Daughters of the Confederacy.

He remarried after Elizabeth Gile Agerton's death to Latitia Miller. There is a marriage certificate showing a Latitia Agerton married an A Mccormack on 21 Dec 1894 in Cooke County,Tx. I loose track of her after that.

Thanks for your help. I am willing to share any information I may have should you be looking for other Agertons.

Reuben Agerton

He was my great-grandfather. My mom is Mary (goes by Kathy) Agerton, who is the daughter of J.W. Agerton, who was the son of Reuben Agerton. I think I have the following information right. Will someone please confirm or correct? Thanks!

Reuben Horton Agerton (born March or April 27, 1894; died August 3, 1981) was the son of William Jesse Agerton (March 4, 1863-April 6, 1943) and Leona (Flowers) Agerton (born March 15, 1866 in Pike County, Alabama; died October 16, 1950).

William Jesse Agerton was the son of Thomas Jefferson Agerton (born between 1832-1835 in Georgia) and Elizabeth (Dorman) Agerton (born around 1844 in Alabama).

Thomas Jefferson Agerton was the son of Willis James Agerton (born between 1801-1804 in South Carolina; died between 1870-1880) and Jerusha (Graham) Agerton. Some of the information I found had Agerton spelled Egerton at this time.

Now for a question. My mother said she was always told that Reuben was Creek Indian. I've seen a photo of him, and he definitely looked like he could've been, but none of the geneological information seems to support it. Does anyone know anything about that?

Thanks again!
Lorri Shannon
AutumnWren76@aol.com

This is my Great Grandfather. I really only have informaton from his birth forward though. His son is my grandfather, and unfortunatly he passed several years ago, before I started trying to do this research. My uncle mentioned that many of the Agerton records were lost in a fire from the Burke County Courthouse when Sherman marched through the south. Maybe this will be helpful though. If you would like more info on Ed, I can ask my grandmother, who is still alive, or you can view my tree. The details you have listed below are correct to my knowledge re the war/occupation and location in Augusta (most of the family still lives there).

James Edward AGERTON (Ed) – Sept 22, 1894 location unknown – July 24, 1985 North Augusta, SC
Married July 14, 1920 in Wrightsville , GA
Mary Sallie HAMMOCK - Sept 22, 1894
3 Children
My grandmother was Isa Mae Agerton and her parents were Queenie (Bass) Agerton and Charles S. Agerton. According to the information I've found, Charles was the son of William James Agerton & Sarah P. McWilliams. Jeanie (Bass) Zorn was also a daughter of William J. & Sarah. William James was the son of Willis James & Jerusha (Graham?) Agerton. Willis J was b. ca 1806 either SC or GA. Jerusha was b. ca 1807 in NC. Hope this helps, please respond with any further information you can provide.

My father, James Austin Agerton, and his siblings were born in Walnut Hill. Daddy was born April 16, 1929 and passed away Dec. 31, 2003 in Butler, ALabama I've got quite a bit of info on the Agerton lineage that I'd be most happy to share. I've been told that there is an Agerton/Milstead family reunion the 1st Sunday of October in the Oak Grove Walnut Hill areas...I need to find alittle more info about it but I hope to make it to the reunion. As my brothers and myself were growing up, we really spent more time with my mother's side of the family so there will be lots of people and lots of info I don't know!
Would love to share my Collins info on the Willis J. Agerton/Genelda/Gerusha Collins line.

My ggg grandparents are Seaborn Joseph Collins and Elizabeth unk who are found in 1850 in Covington Co. Al and widow Elizabeth is found in the household of Willis J. Agerton and Genelda/Gerusha? in 1860 Covington Co. census. I suspect that Genelda is the dau of Elizabeth Collins. They have another dau. Caroline Collins who married John R. Hall. Their son, Francis Marion Collins is my gg grandfather. I was born in Jackson Co. Fl and have relatives in Holmes Co. There is also a Lewis Collins in the 1860 Covington census who may be a brother to Seaborn J. Collins because they are both found in the 1840 Marion Co. Ga census. Ages are close. Just curious.
Can you connect to this line? Would love to share info.
Thanks, Myrna Jackson Findlay, Culloden, Ga.

Willis J. and Jerusha

You will find a variety of information concerning the Willis and Jerusha Agerton line , collected by several persons of the same lineage.
Joyce Agerton (Arkansas), Myself (NC), William Agerton (Texas), Bill Agerton (Atlanta) are researchers that have completed their lineage back to Willis and Jerusha.
There seems to be some suggestion that Willis had a brother, Thomas and they were wards of the court (orphans) in Georgia around 1805. To date, I know of nothing that would prove they were brothers, but an occurance noticed by Joyce. In each case, the first son of each was named after what we think was the brother. Willis named his first son Thomas, while Thomas in turn named his first son Willis.
If you would like more information, contact Joyce Agerton at; gigi@seark.net

I have documents I would share if you want them.

Good Luck
Thomas Agerton
