Henry Agnew and Eleanor McCloy

I am researching Henry Agnew born about 1811 who maried Eleanor McCloy born about 1818 in Ireland. They had three children there, Janet born about 1835, Margaret born about 1838 and William born about 1847. According to 1911 census inforamtion for Janet, the family arrived in Canada in 1847. What I can't seem to find, is where is Ireland they came from/were born. So far, any marriage and death registrations in Canada I have found for this family, only say 'Ireland'. I wonder if this family sounds familiar to anyone? I would appreciate any help or suggestions!

Hi Shelly,

I'm not related (as such) to Jane Agnew, but I do have ancestral links to the Luke's, including Duncan Luke who Jane married, albeit cousins of my direct Luke ancestors.

I have managed to place most of the Lukes who originate from Lochgoilhead, Kilmorich and Strathcur in Argyll, so if you have a particular line you would like details on, I may be able to help.

FYI: Duncan & Jane Luke (ms Agnew) had at least 11 children, namely (in descending age):
William Agnew, Duncan, Lachlan MacBain, John Agnew, Peter Agnew, Margaret, Jane, Duncan (2nd), Catherine, Nicol and Helen.

Presumably the first Duncan died and named a later son Duncan too? I have yet to verify this.

In terms of other information, most of the Luke families have some connection with the fishing industry on Loch Fyne.

Many Lukes buried in Cairndow Churchyard. I will go back and check to see if it includes Duncan and Jane for you.

Hope this helps.
Andy

Re: Daniel AGNEW, Rochester IN, c.1900

Rochester Sentinel, Monday, 6 Oct 1924
Daniel AGNEW, 87, a pioneer of this community and at one time one of the leading men of the county, died sometime Sunday night at the home of Fred L MILLER, his nephew, with whom he made his home. Death was due to paralysis. He suffered a light stroke several years ago but recovered and outside of the usual infirmities resulting from old age had been in good health.

On Sunday he had been active about the house as usual and as was his custom went to the bathroom about 2:30 to take a hot bath. Mr. MILLER, who came home later, noticed a light in the bathroom but thought nothing of it as it was Mr. AGNEW's habit of spending some time bathing. Early Monday morning Mrs. MILLER noticed the steam coming out of the bathroom transom and an investigation and an investigation led to the finding of Mr. AGNEW's body. It is thought he must have passed away suddenly shortly after he went into the bathroom.

Mr AGNEW of recent years since his retirement from the Rochester Telephone Company had spent considerable time writing stories of early Indiana history and many newspapers, including those at Indianapolis, had carried his articles. Those of the early days in Winamac and Rochester were particularly interesting and attracted wide attention. He was recognized as an authority on early history of northern Indiana.

Daniel AGNEW was born in Ripley county, Indiana, Nov. 27, 1838, the son of Jospeh B. and Louisa M. AGNEW. His father was a veteran of the Mexican war, having lost a leg at Buena Vista. In 1850 the family removed to Winamac, where he died Dec. 23, 1895. Daniel was the oldest of twelve children born to the union. He obtained a common school education and until he reached his majority remained upon the farm.

From 1857 until 1860 he was employed as a civil engineer in railway construction and swampland work. He served as surveyor of Pulaski County for one term and then for a year worked in a telegraph office after which in 1864 he came to Rochester and accepted employment as deputy auditor. In 1866 he was elected auditor of Fulton county and re-elected in 1870, serving in the office twelve years altogether.

After leaving the court house he joined a partnership with Charles W. CAFFYN and Samuel , which firm built the gravel road north and south of Rochester on the Michigan Road and for a number of years ran these as toll roads until they were taken over by the state. Later he was active in the founding and promoting of Rochester College, then became interested in the Rochester Telephone Company, serving as secretary until about two years ago when he resigned.

He married Miss Emily L. MILLER Feb. 25, 1862, in Rochester. She was the daughter of Hon. Hugh MILLER, a teacher and a leader in educational work and politics in the county in its early days.

Mr. AGNEW was a democrat in politics, a Mason, and a member of the Presbyterian church, and he and Mrs. AGNEW from the first occupied a prominent place among the people of the community. Mrs. AGNEW died several years ago at their residence on South Main street. Shortly after her death Mr. AGNEW went to the Fred L. MILLER home where he lived.

He is survived by sister, Mrs. Lizzie KEYES [KEYS], and a brother, Frank AGNEW, both of Winamac and two brothers who live in the southern part of the state. Fred MILLER of this city, Mrs. Marguerite MILLER of this city and Hugh MILLER, formerly of Washington, D.C., were related also.

Funeral Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock from the Fred L. MILLER residence with burial in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Rev. D.S.PERRY will officiate.

Re: Daniel AGNEW, Rochester IN, c.1900

DANIEL AGNEW -- In Ripley County, Ind., Nov. 27, 1836 occurred the birth of Daniel Agnew, a son of Joseph B. Agnew, a native of Hamilton County, Ohio, born Oct. 22, 1815. The earlier years of the father’s life were devoted to farming and carpentering. At twelve years of age, he went to Ripley County, Ind., where he remained until 1847, when he enlisted in the war with Mexico. In the battle of Buena Vista he lost a leg and returned home in 1848, and in 1850 removed to Winamac, Ind., where his death occurred Dec. 23, 1895. As a citizen of Pulaski County, he held the position of land commissioner, clerk, recorder and treasurer. He was united in marriage Feb. 25, 1835, to Miss Louisa Boldrey, who was born Jan. 25, 1818, in Ripley County, Ind., and now resides at Winamac, Ind. Joseph B. Agnew was familiarly known as “Uncle Joe”, and so clear was his record and his character was so illumined with good deeds and uprightness, that when the end came his long line of acquaintances in Pulaski County seemed to say, “Let the good and true man rest.” Of twelve children born to Joseph and Louisa M. Agnew, Daniel is the eldest. He obtained a common school education. Until he gained his majority he remained upon the farm. From 1857 until 1860 he was employed as civil engineer in railway construction and swamp land work. He served as surveyor of Pulaski County for one term, and then for one year worked in a telegraph office, and in 1864, he came to Rochester and accepted employment in the auditor’s office as deputy auditor. In 1866 he was elected auditor of Fulton County, and re-elected to the same position in 1870. As auditor and deputy auditor he served the people twelve years. The marriage of Mr. Agnew to Miss Emily L. Miller was solemnized Feb. 25, 1862. She was born in Fulton County, Ind. Mrs. Agnew is a daughter of Hon. Hugh Miller, who was born at Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 4, 1806, and his death took place March 11, 1867. In boyhood he removed with his parents to Butler County, Ohio, where Oct. 21, 1830 he married Miss Phebe Caffyn and soon after removed to Decatur County, Ind., and later removed to Delphi, Ind., where for three years he had charge of a seminary. From his early manhood he was a teacher by profession. He came to Fulton County in 1837, when there were but a few log cabins in Rochester and many Indians in the county. He resided in Rochester a few years and then removed to his farm about three miles south of the town, where his death ensued. He was a member of the convention that formed our present state constitution, and served several terms in the Indiana general assembly, both as representative and senator. He was judge of the court of common pleas the four first years after the organization of that court. He was always a devoted friend of education and for many years was the county examiner of teachers, and had a state reputation as an educator and leader in affairs. He was liberal and kind-hearted, and the especial friend of the poor. His death unto this day has left a vacancy hard to be filled. In politics, the subject of this review has been identified with the interests of the democratic party, and he and Mrs. Agnew (nee Miller) are among the prominent people of Northern Indiana.
"Pictorial History of America, The Fulton County Edition" by Elia Peattie - published in 1896
Re: Adoption and birth records

Agnew is not a common name. I know, it's my maiden name.

The 1920 census to me is proof WILLIAM L. AGNEW and his wife CARRIE have a son KENNETH AGNEW. You said your father was born Aug 15, 1917 in Maryland and was adopted when he was 8 years old in Mahoning County, Ohio.

Look at Line 76 of the 1920 census, the date of the census January 21-22, 1920. KENNETH AGNEW, age 3, b. ca 1817, born in Maryland lives in Sebring Village, Smith Township, Mahoning County, Ohio and is the son of WILLIAM L. AGNEW and CARRIE. In August 1920, KENNETH would turn 4 years old. The census is not always acccurate for the ages of people.

The only other Agnew born in Maryland living in Mahoning County, Ohio is William L. Agnew's brother (Harry Agnew b. ca 1882 and he does not have a son named Kenneth.
Harry's sons in the 1920 census are named: Harold age: 13; John age:11; Charles age: 8 and Donald age: 2-4/12.

Census read by Nancy Agnew Peché:
------------------------------------------------------------
1920 CENSUS, ED # 136; Sebring Village, Smith Twp., Mahoning Co., OH
------------------------------------------------------------
Ancestry.com - Roll: T625_1412; Page: 215; Sheet: 8 B; Image: 953 - # 16 of 21
January 16-17, 1920

Indexed: Willie L Agnew
Indexed: Kenneth Agnew

Maryland Ave / 213 / 177 / 169
72. Trust me, I believe I'm 99.9% sure William L. Agnew and Carrie Favorite are parents of your father Kenneth Agnew. You can hire someone to research for you, but I doubt they would come up with anymore than I have on the internet and my services were done for free. :>)

E-mail me directly at nlpeche@aol.com
Give me your phone number and I will discuss my research with you at length.

You have a date of birth and full name for your father.
You also have the names of his parents WILLIAM L. AGNEW and CARRIE FAVORITE from his mother's death certificate.
From the 1910 census we know your father's Kenneth's parents lived in Emmitsburg, Frederick County, Maryland
and that's probably where he was born.

If I were you, I'd write for his birth certificate from The Division of Vital Records in Maryland. Call them first and ask if being the daughter of Kenneth Agnew, deceased, if you will be able to obtain his birth certificate if he was adopted at age 8. Since he was adopted in Ohio and was born in Maryland, his birth record may not be sealed and they will let you obtain the b.c. Ask them what they need in order for you to obtain his birth certificate.

The Division of Vital Records
6550 Reisterstown Road
Reisterstown Road Plaza
Baltimore, MD 21215
(410) 764-3038
or 1-800-832-3277

Regards,
Nancy Agnew Peché
Just came across your post to my query. I'm sorry I missed it the first time. I have a bit of difference in the family history. According the The Book of the Agnews by Mary Agnes there were 3 more James Agnews in between Janes Agnew b. 1711 and Alexander Agnew of Whithills (1609-1695). I also have several generation before that back to Scotland and before that to France and would be glad to send you the information. I got most of it from the Book of the Agnews by Mary Agnew. I do have copies of some of James Agnew's (b. 1711) records including his will and some property records and a photograph of his gravestone at Marsh Creek Cemetery in Lancaster.
I do not however have information on the Gibson Agnew line (nothing after Gibson himself) and would love info on your family line.

Hi Bett,

Apologies for this late reply we have recently moved and I haven't done much research recently. I remember reading your post and was meaning to reply but time has gotten away.

I do have a copy of Annie and John's marriage cert of 1906. But what has caught my eye is that you say your John is a scot. I just had someone say they have Agnew connections in Lismore (the same as me) but that his connections where Scottish. So if you are interested I can hook you up with this person if they haven't already contacted you. The contact's name is Sam... I don't know if it is a gentlemnan or lady but his/her Grandfather's name is Leonard Agnew born in 1914 and they have family in Lismore and Casino in NSW.

Thanks for offering the transcript I appreciate your thoughtfulness and sorry for the late reply.

Regards

Deb Kaya

Re: Looking for Descendants of John Agnew born in Derry, Ireland (immigrated to Australia)

Hi Sam,
The Agnews are one of my least researched lines in my family history. So unfortunately I haven't heard of Leonard. It may be a coincidence but some of my Agnews are from Lismore also but my G-G-Grandfather's has on a birth certificate of one of his children that he was born in Derry, Ireland. This is also on his marriage certificate.

My G-Grandfather John Agnew married Annie Budd (formerly Green) in Sydney in 1906. However this was well after their children had grown and I think that they were living in Lismore but married in Sydney in secret.

You will forgive me if my research has many holes at this stage but their known children were as follows:

Margaret (my G-Grandmother) born in Murrurundi, NSW in 1871. Her Birth Cert says she is illegitimate so technically John Agnew may not be her father. She married Benjamin Frederick Steel in Lismore in 1895.

John Agnew Jr born c1877 married Violet Dagg in 1909 in Brisbane.

George Agnew born 11 May 1880 in QLD, married Marie Winifred Volkman in Lismore in 1908 and died in 1943 in QLD.

Robert Agnew (for whom I have the birth Certificate) born in Caboolture, QLD on 14 April 1888. Possibly married Isabella J. ? in Lismore in 1911.

The following possible children have not been confirmed this is from old research where I have not documented any notes.

Elizabeth Isobel Agnew birth date unknown married in 1907 in Lismore to a Mr Heath.

Ethel Agnew birth date unknown married in 1907 in Lismore to Samuel E Beardon.

Walter Agnew (relationship not confirmed) his wife died in 1961 and would have been born c1872.

As you can see that there are a lot of gaps in the children so there may well be more missing children I have not discovered.

I have discovered a lot of "mistakes" in Annie and John's history... possibly to avoid people knowing they were not married at the time of their children's births. On Robert's birth cert it says they were married in 1869 in Scone, NSW but no record of that exists... they also have changed their ages (reducing it by 5 years) on the marriage cert of 1906, which could be a genuine mistake but it makes me think it is possible for there to have been other mistakes or ommissions.

If you find that we are connected somehow please let me know and I will endevour to make more progress in this area. It is possible that Leonard is the child of one of the children but I don't know of any Scottish heritage.

Thanks for contacting me I have attached a list of all Agnews buried at Toowong Cemetary in Brisbane for your information.

Regards
Deb Kaya

He ws born on August 17, 1915 in Maryland, but I don't have a city. How would I go about finding out who his parents were? He had no information and said the records at the home were burned in a fire. My father passed away last week, so I was just searching trying to find any information.
Thanks

Researching my grandmother's parents. Margaret Agnew was born about 1870, Armagh and Thomas Hughes I can only guess that he was born about 1863 in Ireland. Margaret had two sisters that I know of. Mary Ann being one and Teresa as the other. Margaret and Thomas married in 1897 at the Roman Catholic Chapel f Middleton in the Registrar's District of Tynan. That's all I know about them. Anyone with similar names please email me. You would think with all the people out there that someone would know these people, right?

Hi Sam - I am descended from a Scot - Agnew, John who m. Mary McCredie and came to Australia mid 1800's. All children were born in Scotland - Thomas m. Margaret Dunn or Duncan in Scotland, John m. Margaret Callender, Mary Ann m. Robert Hales and Robert m. Jane aka Jean Galloway - the last 3 married in Australia. I am descended from John and Margaret. If this looks like your Agnew line do get back to me. There is also a website belonging to Bob and Lorna Sinclair with ample online information re a Samuel Agnew who actually eventually seems to have wandered up through where I now live (Guyra NSW) who may have some connection with your Agnews. Bob's contact details are on his website and you can also access this through Rootsweb.com and go to Family Trees. Samuel was a Scot from the area where my John Agnew came so a long way back there could well be a connection for me - but have enough to do tracing my Australian tree at the moment. Good luck and toodles - Bett.

Re: Looking for Descendants of John Agnew born in Derry, Ireland (immigrated to Australia)

Hi there,

I've rencently ventured over here from Sydney, Australia. I originally grew up in a small town, very close to Lismore and Casino. My Grandfather, Leonard Agnew, who recently died nov. last year was born around 1914 in Australia, but his parents were of Scottish heritage.
Was wondering if you have heard of him or know of any Agnew's who live in the northeast of NSW now?

Kind regards,
sam

Re: AGNEWS, WILLIAM GEORGE & ANDREW

Do you know when John was born? My Anna(Annie)Fleming AGNEW was born ca 1828 in PA, but her parents were born Ireland. Unfortunately we are not sure of sibling names, but here is what I have been told.
Annie had a brother called George, who may have been William George. She also was to have a brother David, who died in PA. Her parents names are unknown, but she had a step-father? named William Wray whose will/estate mentions her and other children, and property.
I have the Letters & numbers of the book, and even the page numbers, but can't seem to get anyone in PA probate or courts to check it. The ones who were willing wanted 59.99 for every year they research. I don't know when William Wray died, so I am not investing unknown amounts of money, especially when the Letters and numbers of the Volume should be an alert to the year.
It was said there were 2 sets of children named in the Deed/will/estate. Apparently Annie was still fighting her case when she died in 1905. She had relatives named"
ARMSTRONG, GRIER/GREIR, ALEXANDER, BELL, and some I can't remember.
She was married in cincinnati Oh in 1857 to Tilghman/Tillman Wright, and had T.James Jr., George and Frank. She died in 1905 in Cinci.
She was connected to property in Germantown PHILIDELOPHIA, and Perrysville near Pittsburgh.

I know my Grandmother(Mary Agnew Hislop) who was born in Sept.21 1897 was born in Scotland, her mother was Mary Agnew. I have an address I think is in Scotland where she was born; 36 Flora St. Broughton,County of Salford[I haven't checked the address yet].Not long after my Grandmother passed away, my sister told me that Gram (thats what we called her)had talked about her sister Catherine a few times, but my sister couldn't recall any more details. I've been looking through my notes and I have a copy of a letter that was written by my Grandmother, it's very confusing, but I think it might open another door. I'll write it word for word and maybe it will make sence to you! I believe she was listing her parents siblings, but some of the names seem to be 1st names and some maybe middle? and last? that's what I find confusing, see if you can figure it out, and yes there is a James, but I don't know if he is Agnew or Hislop? Personally I think he's Agnew! Here it is......
Names of Dads and Mothers, John,Stewart,Alexander,Robert Daniel Moore, James and William. There was one girl, the last of the family. Her Grandmother Jane Stewart and after her mother Mary, and Dad was named after his Grandmother. Stewart and brothers were all younger than dad.
Confusing isn't it?? Well, if you can make heads or tails of it, please let me know, I'm more confused then ever!!!
Teresa Asman

Hi,

I have Agnews in my tree and wondered if you have come across them.

Margaret Agnew c.1833 wed a Moore? & had children.
She wed again in Belfast 1866 to a widower with kids named Robert Quinn. They had William James, Elizabeth & Margaret. On the childrens church records one parent was a Catholic (Quinn) so not sure what Margaret was. Her father may have been named James a farmer but unsure.
Robert had a son named Alexander Quinn (my line) and maybe a Sarah that I know of.

Also, Eliza 'Elizabeth' Agnew c.1800 died Donaghadee Co Down wed Hugh Tanner. Some Tanners went to scotland and they were Presbyterian. One daughter married twice a McConville Co Down & William Holmes in Belfast.

I have hit a Quinn brick wall and need any help possible.

Thanks

Lauraquinn11@aol.com
