Confederate veteran Frank I. Ahern, Laurel, MD, 1912
While looking for correspondence of George Patrick Ahern in the papers of Theodore Roosevelt at the Library of Congress today, I came across a letter from a Frank I. Ahern of Laurel, Maryland, dated Nov. 20th, 1912, writing from New York, that reads as follows:
"Dear Mr. Roosevelt, On Nov 5th I cast my vote for you & Johnson. I am an old confederate cavalry man served in a Georgia Reg. under Wade Hampton. never voted until this year any ticket but straight Democratic. I intend to stick with the Progressives from this out. We here in Laurel gave your ticket 124 votes out of a registration of 5.50. If we had the means to start a Progressive [indecipherable] I think could make many votes in Southern Md. Wishing you and principals you advocate the very best of luck I am your obt. servant, Frank I. Ahern"
The above is on letterhead that says FRANK I. AHERN, Collection Agency, P. O. Box 51, Laurel, MD.
