Wilhelm Heinrich AHRENDT b. 8 Jan 1832 Prussia d. 28 Dec 1894 Chicago, Cook Co. IL m. in Prussia Dorothea THORSEN b. 31 Aug 1832 Prussia d. 30 Dec 1882 Chicago, Cook Co. IL. Upon entry to U.S. their names were changed to 'Henry and Dora' Ahrendt. They came by sailing vessel (not steamer) departing from Hamburg and arriving in NY on Aug 27, 1865. They sailed on the Priz Albert which was one of the very last, if not the last, steel sailing vessels which ran from Hamburg to NY bringing immigrants. In 1865 75% of the people came by steamers, but the Ahrendts came by sailing vessel. The trip would have taken on average 43-70 days. On board were 34 yr old Wilhelm Heinrich Ahrendt, 34 yr old Dorothea Ahrendt, their 3 yr old son Wilhelm Johannes Ahrendt (William John Ahrendt) and an infant named Carl Ahrendt. (Carl may have been born back in the German Confederation or on board ship). They had one additional child, the only one to be born on U.S. soil: another Henry Ahrendt in 1871 Chicago, Cook Co. IL.
The three children of 'Henry and Dora Ahrendt' were:
William John Ahrendt born 30 May 1863 Germany
Carl Ahrendt born ca 1865 (Germany or on board sailing vessel)
Henry Ahrendt b. 1871 Chicago, IL
The family appears in the 1880 census for the 5th and 6th wards of Chicago, Cook Co. IL where father Henry Ahrendt is a carpenter along with his son William John Ahrendt. Dora Ahrendt is keeping house and 9 yr old Henry Ahrendt is in the household. The infant 'Carl Ahrendt' who was aboard the sailing vessel is not in the household. The matriarch Dora Ahrendt died first. She died at age 50 from a femoral hernia operation. She had lived just 17 yrs in the U.S. Her husband 'Henry' Ahrendt lived for 29 yrs in the U.S. after immigrating. He died of chronic nephritis. They are both buried in the Waldheim Cemetery (now known as the Forest Home Cemetery located in Forest Lake, Lake County, Illinois. The older section is still known as the 'German Waldheim' section).
