The father of John Aiken (the one who married Anna Griggs) is Edward Aiken and his mother Margaret Woodburn. There is a birth certificate in the New England Historial and Genealogy Society Library in Boston, MA proving this.

Their son was also John Aiken who married Sara Wright. A pioneer hotel man in Pennsylvania and New York running a tavern, as inns were then commonly called, at Lawrenceville, Pa., and later at Hornellsville. He returned to Pennsylvania where he devoted his attention to agricultural pursuits until September, 1858, when he moved with his family to Onalaska, La Crosse County, Wis., where he was a pioneer settler. He remained in Onalaska one year and moved to Midway and then near West Salem, where he was engaged in farming for about five years. He returned to Onalaska where he died in 1864.

The paragraphs below were written by an Aiken lady who lives in Onalaska, WI.
John and Sarah (Wright) Aiken were born and raised in Vermont. After their marriage, Mr. Aiken was a pioneer hotel man in PA and later ran an inn in Lawrenceville, PA ( I can find NO record of this in Lawerenceville, PA The census indicates he was a farmer). They came west in 1858 settling in Onalaska, Midway and West Salem, WI areas where they were farmers. They also lived in MI for a few years before returning to Onalaska. The Aikens had 12 children. Two daughters, Mrs. Helen Fletcher and Mrs. Emma Farrand continued to make their homes in the city (Onalaska, WI) Three sons, Charles Eugene, David L. and Frank (Fred) H. made important contributions to Onalaska's history. Mrs. Aiken died in 1862 and Mr. Aiken in 1864. (written by Mary E. Aiken) (Gravestone says 1867).

Would you email me privately at VICTORIANISFUN@aol.com and we can continue this? I have much to share with you! Patti

Do you have anything that proves this connection? I am trying to join DAR through this line and would like to be able to prove that John Aiken, b 1807 is from this line. I would really appreciate any help or info you have.

Her family goes John and Anna Griggs>John and Sarah Wright>Charles and Antoinette Miller>Thomas and Hannah Warren>John and Cora Wirtz> Jane Aiken Skogen Low and my dad Dick Low.

Thanks for the additional information.
I saw your post and believe it is the same family I have been tracking. I believe John G Aiken is from the Londonderry Windham Vermont Aiken family who originated from the Londonderry New Hampshire Aiken family.
Parents: John Aiken b 1765 Vermont d 1865 Vermontand Anna Griggs b 1770 d 1882.
Parents: Deacon Edward Aiken b 1727 Londonderry NH d 1753 Londonderry VT and Maragaret Woodburn b 1730 New Hampshire d 1823 Windham VT.
Parents: Nathaniel Aiken b 1696 Ulster, Ireland d 1782 Londonderry N.H. and Maragaret Cochran b 1710 Ireland d 1788 Londonderry NH
Parents: Edward Aiken b 1860 Ireland d 1747 Londonderry Ireland and Barbara Edwards b 1670 Ireland d 1744 Londonderry N.H.

There are a number of histories of Londonderry New Hampshire and Londonderry Vermont available if you google for them that talks about this family in both areas. Also there is an Aiken family history that is available through a google search...family tree of Aiken of Hissborough County in New Hampshire. /this takes the family through John Aiken born may 13 1807.

See what you think...I think they are a match, hopefully.

Hello, my name is Johnathon Akin, I have been trying to find anything out about my family history on the Aiken side of things. I do not know much about my family except what a cousin told me. Our family moved from Ireland many years ago and settled in Marble, Arkansas. I only know my father's first name, have never met anyone else in the family, so please bare with me as I am shooting in the dark on this.

My father's name is Richard Akin; had 4 kids, Richard Raymond Akin jr, Kathrine Ruth Akin, and Johnathon Lacy Akin, and then 4th is a half brother who I do not know his name or where he lives.

to my knowledge, my father is still alive, but unsure. He does have a sister by the name of Vicki Akin.

He grew up in Prescott, Arizona and has lived many other states. I am 38 and was born January 28, 1971.

Please get back with me and let me know if you have any knowledge of him.

Thank you
Cheers!

Re: Aiken, Akins 1800-1920 OH>MI>OH>MO; also now Russell

My hus is descended from William Aiken & Dora Russell, and I would like to find others researching this line in MO, MI, OH, CT, possibly MS. I did see the posts noted in the replies to this msg in 2005- those were a lot of help, but also cause more ?. Our older family members who knew Dora told me that William (b. 1859) also lived in Sikeston, MO; Jackson, MS; and d. Tylerlawn, MS. There was an 'Aiken Pecan Farm' near Jackson (possibly owned by Sam Lee?) that he lived on in later years. The family also stated that Wm. remarried a number of times, but did not know names of wives. Some of this info contradicts what was posted, but I believe the St. Louis family lost touch with Wm., so? There is no one left who could answer these ? in our St. Louis family, and I regret how late I am starting research on this line.

Tried to attach mar. cert of Samuel J. Lee and Dorothy Adele Aikens, however it would not send. (Can email scan to anyone interested.) It states she was of "Muskogee, Ind. Ter." There is a family story of being part Michigan Indian, but am wondering if her time in MI plus this "Ind. Ter." notation is the source of that. Dorothy did not know the name of her mother's mother or father when she completed the death cert. for Dora Russell Aikens.

Am also looking for info re: other families in this line: Brainerd & Strong back in the Aikens line, as well as for Dora Russell's parents names. I can share more recent info about family in St. Louis and some pix.
TIA-

Saw your post regarding the Eakins family on a genealogy website. Am looking for information on Isaac Aiken/Eaken born in VA. abt 1807 who married a Mahala b. 1810 in TN. They were in Monroe County Tenn in 1840, Meigs County Tenn in 1850 and eventually moved to Camden County MO between 1850 and 1860 where they lived for the remainder of their years (or so I believe). My GGGrandfather was their son Andrew J. Eakins of Meigs and Rhea County Tenn.

I am specifically looking for info regarding who Isaac Aiken's parents were and who Mahala's parents were. Isaac may possibly have brother's John, Sam, Isaac, and Thomas who were also residing in McMinn County Tenn in early 1830's.

I have a fairly complete history of Isaac and his lineage from 1807 to current time, but would like to go further back. If you can be of help I would certainly appreciate it and would be willing to share information.
Just don't confuse him with James Aiken, m Elizabeth Reid. (The Aikens, Akins, etc followed Rev. Martin from Antrim to SC)

Aiken/Aikens/Akins family, Jackson County, GA, early 1900s

I am trying to trace a family that lived in Jackson County for at least 20 years, possibly more. I only have them so far on the 1930 census.

1930 Harrisburg, Jackson County, Georgia

Akins, James, 48, GA, GA, GA, farmer
Elise, 31, GA...
Dillard, 20, GA
Rufy (Rufus?), 18, GA
Henry G. (Grady), 16, GA
Emory E. (Edward), 14, GA
Woodroe, 11, GA
Claud, 10, GA
William J., 8, GA
Mary, 6, GA
James, 5, GA
Earnest R., 3, GA
Ruthie M., 1, GA

The line I'm researching comes through Dillard, who was born in March of 1910 in Jackson County, GA. He eventually settled in Rockdale County, GA, where he died in 1990. Henry Grady and Emory Edward were also born in Jackson County, GA, and also lived in Rockdale County until their deaths in 1965 and 1973, respectively.

Dillard's father was James Richard Akins/Aikens/Aiken, born about 1882 in Georgia. His mother was Sarah W. Simmons, also born in Georgia, although I don't know her birthdate. She died when Dillard was nine years old, according to Dillard's widow and granddaughter, which would put Sarah's death year around 1919, presumably in Jackson County. James then remarried about three months later to Elise. I understand that there might have been a bit of friction about his hasty remarriage among his children. James had several children with Elise, thus the large family listed in the 1930 census.

I appreciate any help in locating this family. Dillard's granddaughters are newbies at genealogy, I think, and are very interested in what can be found!

Thanks so much!

Lisa
Rev. Samuel Fletcher Aiken, born in GA, died in TX

I'm researching the genealogy of the Rev. Samuel Fletcher Aiken, born Sep. 22, 1855, in GA., and died Nov. 20, 1932, in Sherman, Grayson Co., TX. He was a Baptist Minister in Whitesboro, TX. He and his wife are buried at the Oakwood Cemetery in Whitesboro, Grayson Co., TX. (You can see my posting of his headstone photo at Find-A-Grave.) His death record says his father was Sam AIKEN, born GA. Mother unknown. I would like to find out more about his ancestors, but this is all I have. I think I found him in the 1860 Census in Cobb Co., GA. The entry says Sam'l F. Akin, age 6, male, born GA. The head of the family is a 70 year old female named Ellender Akin. Other's enumerated in this family are Lucinda Akin, age 35, R.M.M.D. Akin, female, age 3, A.F. Akin, female, age 17. I looked up this Ellender in the 1850 census, and found an interesting community in Newton Co., GA. There was an Ellender King, age 60, living in a family headed by John King, age 70. The family next on the census is a Samuel Akin, age 34, then the next family is headed by James Hester. I think these families are somehow related to Samuel F. Aiken, but I can't put them together yet. Samuel Fletcher Aiken married Malinda W. Hester. I have seen many variations of her surname....Hurston / Houston / Hurtson / Thurston / Herston / Hester. Malinda's parents are Leroy "Lee" Henry Hester, and Lucinda Caroline Stancell. Samuel and Malinda were married Jan. 22, 1872. I have found 11 children of theirs.....Mary V. (Aiken) Evitt, Carry Aiken, Anna Aiken, Fletcher Lee Aiken, Judson Clemans Aiken, Sam Fletcher Aiken, Herby Aiken, Charles Spurgeon Aiken, William Leroy Aiken, Cecil E. Aiken, John Hewlett Aiken. Samuel's wife Malinda W. Hester, was born April 1, 1857, at Villanow, Walker Co., GA. I would like to hear from anyone working on these lines.
